I know for a fact that I’m not going to have Frisk fall down while MC is down there as a safety thing but like... there’s still definitely a part of me that’s just like

okay but MC wakes up to a phone call from Toriel one morning and Sans is still half asleep and overhearing her half of the conversation. and it’s just a lot of “mmhm”s and “yeah?”s and an “okay I’ll be there as soon as I can get there...” and he grumbles questioningly against her side as she extracts herself and she just hesitates before pressing a kiss to his forehead and says “I’ve gotta go handle something for Toriel. Be back soon.”

and then by the time he’s fully awake and aware it’s to the sound of Papyrus crowing about their “tiny new friend” and every part of him feels cold, and he looks out the window and the kid is there, huddled close to her side and hesitantly looking around.

And they turn in time to look up and make eye contact with him through the window and their face goes pale and they’re already hiding behind her and

And Stars, there’s a part of him that feels pure murder brewing.

But then MC is looking down a tthem and noticing their fear-response and then she’s looking up and also making eye contact and there’s a brief moment of hesitation before she very deliberately sets her shoulders and gently tugs them more properly behind her. She’s making a choice and she’s making it clear.

And god, everything just got a heck of a lot more complicated.

Basically I just really, really like the idea of taking the concept of “MC is kind of unintentionally emotionally adopting Frisk and Chara” and turning it into “MC kind of completely intentionally actually adopted Frisk (and Chara) because they accidentally fell down with her.”

In the late 21st century the realm of science, psychology, and neurological study has progressed far enough to reliably identify and diagnose the symptoms of believed “mental disorders”, to the point where it becomes apparent that the majority of the populace (roughly 63%, at the time of the first such study) is showing symptoms. The most common of the symptoms that cropped up were the presence of differing personalities (many test subjects referred to them as ‘headmates’, and the slang became prevalent).

As further studies were prompted, it became apparent that from a purely physiological standpoint, the minds those with headmates performed much more effectively than those without, and paired with the growing majority, it was tentatively theorized that these “Headmates” might be a new form of psychological evolution in humans.

By the mid 22nd century, a further ‘evolution’ was proposed. Those with the most stable relations with their headmates were showing signs of honest to god telepathy; initially mistaken as heightened empathy, it soon gained evidence and support that the test subjects (a bare fraction of a percent of the general populace) could legitimately affect another’s mind from the inside out by dropping into their minds.

Fast forward to the 25th century. “Droppers” are a recognized form of psychiatry doctor. Nicknamed the Mental Military, certified Droppers are a rarity in the world, as the process to certify is incredibly difficult and potentially capable of obliterating the primary consciousness altogether.

The year is 2436. 26-year-old Avery Marles is accepting her first Drop job as a certified Dropper, a job that many therapists and uncertified Droppers will not touch. Alexander Fultun, 23, somehow has too many headmates.

It’s not unheard of to have two and three alternate headmates sharing a headspace with the Primary. Avery herself has two, headstrong and smartmouthed Reynard and meticulous and calmly introspective Siyla. Alex, however, has identified at least seven distinct personalities, and insists that there were others, once, who no longer speak. And he’s requested a Dropper’s assistance to get some semblance of control over his erratically changing mental landscape.

Avery takes the job. She’s not confident but she’s not going to back down.

The only problem comes when she winds up stranded in his extremely volitile headspace, with a time limit to get things done and find a way back out before she herself becomes assimilated.
