Tinkers as a classification are actually far more broad than most assume, almost to the point that grouping them in a single category makes no sense. As a pure threat rating system, that’s fair. All “Tinker” means to say, the PRT or anyone else trying to subdue, kill or capture one is “a parahuman whose exercise of a versatile range of abilities requires assembled material components”.

In reality however, their creations fall into a mix of three broad scopes:

Actual, just incredibly advanced technology. Parahuman ability more akin to a hyperspecific Thinker than anything else.

Microtelekinetically enhanced pieces of almost technology. Like, if you squint it’s kinda playing by physics’ rules? But juice is coming from somewhere, vibrations are being dampened, radiation’s… disappearing? This category is most prone to sabotaging itself, as the rules are already being fudged so who’s to say if it ‘needing maintenance’ or suddenly failing makes sense or not.

Straight up fucking magic.

Something that bothers me about Tinkers in fanfic is that... well, most writers make them boring?

I enjoy power-armor as much as the next person, but add a little pizzazz ya know? Armsmaster may use power armor, but his real gimmick is that he has fancy stick that has a lot of neat little tricks.

Kid Win made a flying skateboard that can become an artillery platform, and then became a gun-hedgehog, and that's cooler than 99% of what fanfic tinkers make

Kenzie turned a camera flash into a gun and makes giant boxes that mess with light and time and space

Labrat made himself a syringe collar that mutates him and alters his emotions for various powered effects

String Theory needed to use Rube Goldberg esque devices that could fail if people stopped them!

Which, speaking of, give tinkers weaknesses! Kenzie, Chris, and Armsmaster all get fucked up by having their tech broken or stolen. String Theory needs to not fuck up her timing. Mannequin disposes of any tech that has a single flaw or chip in it, implying that it can fragile internally.

I'm reminded of a WoA cape that Wildbow made as an example, who's tinker specialty required that they needed exotic power sources to work: an ancient artifact, a cycle of the moon, and the body of an olympic level athlete as an example.

Worm and Ward powers are meant to be weird and off the wall compared to Marvel or DC stuff. I wish more writers just took that plunge for themselves.

Sometimes I wish Wildbow got crazier with Biotinkers. Like don't get me wrong I love my boy Blasto and Riley is my favorite nightmare child but we can get weirder with it.

Give me a tinker who specialises in selective breeding and evolution. They can create fucked up, Nilbog-esqe monstrosities but have to go through the trial and error of breeding their creations to get the right genes.

Give me a tinker who can engineer and alter food and give a variety of boons to allies or horrifically poison enemies.

there's gotta be one tinker for every drug right. like how walter white is so good at making meth it's sort of cartoony, but instead scion gave you an alien parasite that makes you really good at growing weed, making it really strong and smooth, making weed weapons, bong grenades strong enough to incapacitate the triumvirate, and it's all you can think about all the time.
