New York for Vegans
Here is a list of my favorite vegan restaurants in New York. Now I realize that we are spoiled here with all of the options, but I think it is still important to note that not all of those places are created equal. Some advertise that they are vegan and gluten free but use a lot of fake, processed food made from soy and other additives, while others are truly healthy and source only the most natural and organic ingredients. If you are planning a trip to NYC, these are the places you won't want to miss!
1. Hu Kitchen
While Hu Kitchen is a paleo-diet oriented cafe, they offer a lot of vegan options sans meat. My favorite part about their philosophy is that they are entirely grain free (which means they are entirely gluten free!) and they use only the best ingredients they can find (olive oil, sea salt, coconut sugar). While prices may be higher it is totally worth it because it is the only cafe I know that uses sea salt as their base condiment! No fake alternatives here! Hu offers everything from fresh juice and breakfasts like chia pudding and a custom mash bar, to veggie market plates and lots of to go options! All ingredients are clearly market and everything is organic and gluten free. (Note: since this is a paleo-diet friendly establishment, check the ingredients because a lot of the food contains things like eggs or chicken stock).
2. Juice Generation
This is my favorite juice bar in the city. Not only do they offer full week cleanses from their partner line, Cooler Cleanse, but they will juice anything in their kitchen in any combination. I have tried almost every smoothie and juice on the menu and I haven't found one I didn't like. Ingredients are clearly stated and the team is extremely flexible so you can add and subtract anything you don't like. The Cooler Cleanse also offers great meals on the go for a vegan and gluten free diet. Also, be sure to try one of Juice Generation's acai bowls. It was the first place that I had one and years later, I still haven't found a better alternative in NYC!
3. Juice Press
The Juice Press is a great alternative to Juice Generation. This shop specializes in unique juice and smoothie combinations as well as offering some great food options like kale salad and their signature matcha bowl. The only negative I have about juice press is that they are unclear about some of their nutrition information, even though all of the ingredients are clearly marked on their products. Also, most juices and smoothies come pre bottled (they are bottled the same day they are sold) but there is something I like about seeing a smoothie blended right in front of me, so I ask them to do so.
4. Organic Avenue
Organic Avenue has some equally interesting juice and smoothie combinations that I haven't seen anywhere else. The store recently introduced a line of raw food items you can purchase daily. I have tried their quinoa bowl and kale salad and both were satisfying and delicious. The coconut water at Organic Avenue is the best I have ever had. The store packages their glass bottled juices in recyclable orange tote bags that have become somewhat of a statement around town. I use mine as a shopping bag at the farmer's market all the time.
5. Liquiteria
Liquitera is New York's original juice shop. It has been around since the mid nineties, but it is slowly going mainstream with planned expansion to Union Square and a newly opened shop in Chelsea. This juice bar offers both bottled and freshly made juices as well as soups and some other food options. I recently tried their coconut oil and turmeric baked yams and pumpkin chia pudding (got to love the abundance of Fall flavors) and both were equally delicious. My favorite juice here is the liver detox that contains vitamins from superfoods like beets and carrots!
6. One Lucky Duck
Sister cafe to the more upscale, Pure Food and Wine, One Lucky Duck is a juice store and chain that offers both pre bottled and freshly made concoctions along with some delicious meal options. Their menu changes seasonally and every time I visit their Irving Place or Chelsea Market locations, I find something different. Not only do they sell your standard kale salad, customers have the option to buy separate vegan salad toppings like pumpkin seed macadamia "parmesan" cheese, tahini, or dulse flakes. You can also buy brew-it-yourself kombucha kits, various superfoods like goji berries and even unique nut butters like the cinnamon red maca almond butter.
7. The Butcher's Daughter
This newly opened cafe in the Lower East Side is a great spot for buying a juice or smoothie on the go or grabbing a bite for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The Butcher's Daughter is a vegetarian restaurant (they serve eggs and bread) but they pride themselves in using market fresh ingredients and offer meal options for all diets. They offer an entire charcuterie board of vegan substitutes for cheese and salami, using ingredients like beets to make tartare, white bean fennel sausage and cashew cheese ricotta with figs. I also highly recommend the smashed avocado toast (if you are allergic to gluten, ask for the gluten free bread!). Also be sure to try my favorite juice here, the Hangover Killer, which is made with coconut water, pineapple, yuzu, chili, primrose oil and cilantro. The cafe recently opened a shop around the corner where you can buy tea, market fresh produce and homemade jams.
8. ABC Kitchen
While not the first restaurant to come to mind when thinking vegan, this is one of my favorite restaurants in NYC because you can take your meat eating dining companion here without protest and still be able to enjoy yourself. For your lunch date, suggest for your friend to try one of ABC Kitchen's delicious whole wheat pizzas or the famous akaushi cheeseburger, while you can happily support your no meat and cheese eating lifestyle with one of Jean George's vegetarian creations, all sourced seasonly from the nearby farmer's market. While the menu changes regularly, the restaurant offers everything from kale salad to roasted carrots with avocado, lentil soup, roasted beets, and kabocha squash! There are plenty more options, just be sure to tell your server about your dietary restrictions and they will gladly substitute any cream or butter with vegan alternatives.
9. Tiny Empire
The latest addition to the juice craze is brought to you by this stand alone store off of Williamsburg's famed Bedford Avenue. Tiny Empire offers delicious bottled and fresh pressed juices and some of the most unbelievable smoothie combinations I have ever tried this side of the island (actually the only, but it's worth the trek!). Tiny Empire also offers some unique vegan food options like a delicious cashew acai cheesecake and a cashew cream tiramisu, among other options like salads and kelp noodles with tahini dressing. Grab your lunch to go and enjoy it people watching the Brooklyn hipster set outside on the cafe's bench.
While this list is inconclusive because as many know, NYC is a mecca for vegans, I wanted to share some of my favorite places with you to get an idea the variety this city has to offer.
