Rich Roll Podcast #159 07/15/15
“How to cultivate extraordinary relationships & the power of neutrality in navigating conflict”
Seek advice from those whose life you admire.
Don’t discuss your relationships in a negative light to outsiders. Only discuss it with people who have your best interests at heart and you are sure of this.
Those that are alone are living in a cave where they are are unable to come into contact with their negative personality traits that need to be worked on.
Being in a relationships requires you to work on your bad personality traits.
People in relationships live longer.
Being in a relationship requires you to have the same priorities when it comes to money, your job, your actions. If your priorities clash, you will not be able to have a happy relationship.
Let today be the day you open your heart and let change happen ☀️
My picks for setting a warm and inviting holiday dinner table. Gold details are perfect for any occasion from Thanksgiving to New Years, so you can reuse the beautiful stemware, candles, coasters and decorations for all of your winter gatherings. Even a cozy dinner for family or friends. You can find all of these tablewares at my favorite home decoration store, Anthropologie.
Ayruvedic Warming Foods for Winter Months
Rice, wheat, oils (coconut, linseed, avocado, hemp, olive), warm water and milk help promote longevity. Have a warm breakfast (porridge is excellent) and end the day with hot milk (almond milk is a good choice), ginger, cinnamon, cardamon and honey. Nutmeg will also aid sleep but just a small pinch. Drink spicy teas throughout the day, avoiding cold water, ice cream and other cooling foods which will aggravate Kapha and Vata.
Massage with warm oil and saunas or steam rooms are all good to ward off the cold. As in Autumn, Vata is drying, so skin needs extra care. Ground yourself with a daily self-massage with a warm sesame oil or olive oil followed by a warm shower/ bath to prevent feelings of coldness, and stiff, aching joints.
Its fine to get up later than in Summer, but its still a good idea to be up at 7am. Practise some form of vigorous exercise to get the lymph moving in the body, preventing future congestive problems. Exercise is also one of the best ways to stimulate a sluggish digestion, regulate the metabolism and aid the removal of toxins from the body. The Sun Salutations are an idea start to the day, as they build up heat in the body and work all the major muscles.
Carrot and Ginger Soup
2/3 medium carrots per person
1 large onion
2 potatoes
Large bunch coriander
1/2 pint of vegetable stock per person
1 inch of ginger chopped.
Lightly sweat onion on non-stick pan, adding vegetables (finely chopped) and ginger. Fry for a few minutes then add half of coriander. Cover with stock and simmer till vegetables are soft. Liquidise to a puree in blender, then return to pan, adding more stock if too thick. Add rest of coriander (finely chopped) and serve. For a more substantial meal, cook red lentils separately in stock and add to the finished soup before serving.
1. Stop thinking you should be happy all the time.
Without the contrast of the ups and downs of life, we wouldn’t know what real happiness is. Embracing each emotion as it comes will help you feel more peace. Let go of happiness as a permanent way of life, and learn to be present in the journey.
2. Stop thinking you are not where you are supposed to be.
Consider that things don’t happen to you, but they happen for you. What if everything in your life right now is there to help you get to where your soul really wants to be? Instead of resisting what is, accept it. The universe cannot mess up your big picture plans, trust the process.
3. Stop thinking you are damaged or did something wrong.
Those things you call mistakes are actually opportunities to grow. Stop regretting the past and looking at what didn’t pan out. Start to focus your attention on the good.
4. Stop thinking you don’t belong.
No single person is created the same. This creates huge differences that make us feel alone and left out. If you struggle to feel like you belong know that you are not alone. Every other person on the planet feels the same way, which makes us united in our differences. Embrace your unique self; the world needs you as you are.
5. Stop thinking your problems are part of you.
Many of us identify with our problems like the skin on our bodies. Your problems are not part of you. Allow them to come and go and don’t identify with them. Instead of focusing on your problems, be led by the desires in your heart. The more you focus on what you want, the less of what you don’t want will pursue.

Summer Goals
I hate the word "goals" because that, to me, is associated with work. And nobody likes to work, especially on themselves (because that's usually hard and takes time). So my goals are things I started to do slowly and spontaneously and I hope that they will become a habit I can stick with. I noticed that they have helped a lot with improving my mood and even when I really don't feel like doing them and push myself anyway, I feel so grateful to myself afterward. These little accomplishments boost your mood because not only is the process of doing something good for your brain development and stress release, accomplishing a goal makes you feel empowered and motivated and will lead you to stay on track, no matter what your overall goal is. Our lives are all journeys, and it is up to us how we want to lead our journeys. Always stop and reflect on your lifestyle and ask yourself if you are being the best version of yourself. That really motivates me because I want to be setting a good example for those around me. I know I have to be the best version of myself in order to be fulfilled and make myself feel good. Some recent hobbies and practices I have taken up are worth mentioning here and I recommend you to incorporate some of them into your routine, or come up with your own goals that will make you feel fulfilled and motivated.
1. Workout in the park
Now this will definitely not be a daily routine for long because I don't live somewhere warm like LA or Australia, but while the weather is nice in our hemisphere take your workout outside, away from mirrors and other distractions that can demotivate you from working out. There's nothing I hate more than jogging for an hour in place watching the calorie meter move super slow on my treadmill. Go for a run outside away from the numbers and into the fresh air and sun. Not only will you be working on your tan, the fresh air will motivate you to keep going and give you a better all around workout.
2. Earthing
Post workout, take off your sneakers and walk around on the grass. Embrace nature, it does so much good for us! Just five minutes of your soles hitting the fresh earth will ground you and calm you down. I love to do this while I walk my dog. Take a few deep breaths and center yourself and it's all the meditation you need.
3. Lemon Juice
I try to squeeze lemon into my food or water a few times a day. That extra boost of vitamin C never hurt anybody and with all the outdoor activities you will be participating in this summer, the more energy and immunity you have, the better.
4. Yoga
Yoga is my number one form of stress relief and self love. My day is made when I practice yoga and broken if I don't. While we don't always have the luxury of doing a full on hour-long routine, incorporate a few yoga poses into your morning and you will guaranteed be feeling better about yourself before you head out the door. Take the time to listen to your body. Stretch the muscles that feel tense after a long night of sleep. Listen to your breath. When you become in tune with your body, so many more things will begin to make sense in your life, I promise. You already know all of the added benefits of yoga, so just try it. I love this graphic by Free People for a simple morning sun salutation routine. This will take five minutes of your morning, that's it.
5. No Coffee
I love love love a good cup of coffee. Anyone that knows me know that I am obsessed. Unfortunately, I had to give it up because it doesn't mesh with my lifestyle. I am not saying coffee is bad for you. If you can handle a cup a day and feel great, please don't stop drinking it. I, however, experience a lot of negative side effects from drinking coffee and it causes my anxiety to increase. Ever since I stopped drinking coffee, I noticed I've been feeling a lot better and it took almost two months to start experiencing the benefits. I occasionally have a cup of black tea mixed with herbal at breakfast to satisfy that morning caffeine craving.
6. Herbal Tea
Since I cut out coffee, I've been playing around with herbal teas. Lately, I've been buying loose leaf teas and trying out different flavors like pomegranate and vanilla. I even found a probiotic tea made with fermented tea leaves which is really delicious. i bought natural tea bags and add a teaspoon or two of leaves and seep in hot water for around 5 minutes. The flavor combinations tea has to offer are a real treat because there is so much variety and their natural health benefits me feel great inside.
7. No Sugar
I try to stay away from sugar as much as possible because I am extremely sensitive to it. While there has been a trend lately in using unrefined sugars like coconut sugar and maple syrup, sugar is still sugar no matter what you call it. I try to satisfy my sweet cravings with fruits but fruit can contain tons of sugar as well. the USDA recommends 24 grams of sugar a day and considering sugar is found in everything from complex carbs like quinoa and sweet potatoes to the more obvious apples and bananas, it's pretty hard to avoid it all together. I am inspired by Gabby Bernstein and her 200+ day sugar free lifestyle. She has excluded all sugar-laden fruits and consumes only berries and green apples (the most low glycemic fruits on the scale).
8. Jewelry Making
I stumbled upon a really cool bead store in Chicago's Old Town this weekend which led me to discover another bead store called Beadniks in an artsy neighborhood called Wicker Park. I decided to manifest any negative emotions I could be feeling into doing something creative like making jewelry. Not only does it calm me, it allows me to think differently and incorporate something totally new into my routine.
Try any of these tips/goals I have made for myself, or make your own. I want you to be inspired doing whatever it is you enjoy doing. Always remember to love yourself, listen to yourself and and follow your intuition. You will manifest greatness and inspire yourself to be the best that you can be!
Strawberry Sunrise Smoothie
1 cup almond milk
1 cup organic strawberries
1 frozen banana
The winter months are so damaging to skin that it's important to stay well hydrated and to nourish your body. My favorite key ingredients for winter skincare include chamomile, peppermint, ginger, coconut, rose hip, algae and macadamia oil. These ingredients help fight the dryness and flakiness that comes with winter while also covering the skin with essential vitamins and nutrients to keep it healthy and firm.
Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap is a favorite of mine because it is all organic and made with natural, fair-trade ingredients. The benefits of peppermint oil include healing itchy skin, improving cough and cold symptoms and healing sore muscles.
I use Eminence Organic skincare chamomile cleanser ritually. Chamomile extract helps clear up acne, allergies and calms the mind for a restful sleep.
Ginger is a key ingredient in my new eye cream I bought at Lifethyme. Ginger oil increases blood flow to help reduce puffiness, increases elasticity and diminishes inflammation, all to nourish and firm your skin in one of its most sensitive areas, around the eyes.
I found this Pure Fiji Coconut Sugar Scrub at The Standard Spa in Miami. This product is made with sugar, cold pressed virgin coconut oil and exotic nut extracts. The sugar cane crystals exfoliate the skin and gently buff away aging skin cells, helping to unclog pores. The deep moisturizing blend of oils nourishes, moisturizes and protects the skin leaving it glowing and healthy. I recommend to do a scrub at least once a week along with dry brushing to help shed off excess dry skin.
I love this Eminence Eight Greens Phyto Masque for its unique combination of organic ingredients like yucca extract, flaxseed, paprika, honey and bio-complex. These ingredients work together as natural antioxidants that help dehydrated, oily and problematic skin rejuvenate and moisturize.
As the final step to my face cleansing routine, I alternate between Aesop's Damascan Rose Facial Treatment made with a blend of ten plant extracts like almond and carrot oil that help hydrate the skin with Vitamins A and E and Stem Organic's Hydrating Face Fluid made with macadamia oil, shea and vitamin E. This combination is full of essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals and works well for dry skin during the winter months.
No matter what products you choose to put on your body, remember that organic and vegan friendly options are best. What we put on our skin is just as important as what we feed our body!
I made a batch of raw cookie dough using the following recipe from Lily Kunin. It tastes EXACTLY like raw cookie dough but without the eggs, butter and added sugar. I used quinoa flakes instead of oats (gluten free!) and coconut flour instead of coconut flakes. Be sure to reduce the amount of coconut flour if using instead of flakes.
Ingredients Raw Cookie Dough Bites: -¾ cup raw cashews -½ cup rolled oats -½ cup unsweetened coconut flakes -¼ teaspoon salt -3 dates, pitted and soaked in hot water -1 tablespoon vanilla extract -¼ cup dark chocolate chips
Method Raw cookie dough bites: 1. Line a plate with parchment paper and set aside. 2. Combine the cashews, oats, coconut flakes, and salt in a food processor or Vitamix. Pulse until a fine meal forms. 3. Add the soaked pitted dates, 3 tablespoons of the water the dates have been soaked in, and the vanilla extract. Pulse again until the mixture becomes a dough-like consistency. 4. Remove the dough and place in a small bowl. Gently fold in the chocolate chips until they are incorporated into the mixture. 5. Spread the cookie dough into an even layer on the plate and place in the freezer. 6. Once frozen, chop into small pieces and store in the freezer in a covered container. (This makes a relatively large batch of cookie dough bites that will last you a while, but if you don’t feel like making them, the ice cream is great with granola instead!)
Recipe by Lily Kunin of Clean Food Dirty City.
You can add this cookie dough to your vegan ice cream (mix 1 frozen banana with ½ cup of non-dairy milk in a vitamin until smooth) or enjoy straight out of the freezer.

This list isn't very spiritual but I have quite an ambitious year ahead of me...
Don't take anything personally is a beautiful tool of interaction with your own kind, human to human. And it's a big ticket to personal freedom because you no longer have to rule your life according to other people's opinions. This really frees you! You can do whatever you want to do, knowing that whatever you do has nothing to do with anyone but you.
The only person who needs to be concerned about the story of you is you. This awareness changes everything. remember, awareness of the truth is the first step to self-mastery, and that is what you're doing right now. You're being reminded of the truth.
Now that you understanding this truth, now that you are aware, how can you take anything personally anymore? Once you understand that all humans live in their own world, in their own movies, in their own dream the second agreement is pure common sense: Don't take anything personally.
This week I finally read The Fourth and Fifth Agreement by Don Miguel Ruiz. The Fifth Agreement is an extended version of The Fourth, so you don't need to read both. I recommend these books to everyone. I think that if every one of us read them, we would be able to change the world. Ruiz's ideas are so profound they made my head spin! It will take a lot of courage and self will to be able to apply these agreements to my life, but I hope that I will be able to. I think that they are the key to happiness, kindness and respect. Please read this book and share it with everyone you know! Also, here are some pictures of beautiful Italy and a salad I had with lettuce, chickpeas, red and yellow peppers and cucumbers.
