I'm taking an unofficial poll- does anyone with autism want to be cured? I'm on the spectrum (diagnosed with Asperger's), and I personally would not want to be cured. I don't want to be "normal". I would accept a cure for my OCD or any of my physical conditions, but I feel like autism is a permanent, inseparable part of my personality. I am curious to know how you feel about this subject.
i think a LOT of autistic people would agree that they wouldn’t want to be cured. most of my autistic friends would agree. obviously i can’t talk for all autistic folks, because some may disagree, but i’d say a lot don’t.
i think the big issue with the idea of a ‘cure’ for autism is that autism is, as you said, inseparable from the person. some people have this idea that you could, like, remove autism, and underneath it there would be a ‘normal person’. this is just not true, and is a dangerous idea imo. autistic folks can sometimes be ‘trained’ out of certain behaviours (though this is almost always a terrible and abusive practice) but that doesn’t change who they are or take away the autism, it just changes behaviour.
there are definitely certain things with autism, and certain things comorbid with autism, that i could live without. but my autism is also a massive part of who i am; i would love to get rid of the intense anxiety, the way i cry over tiny things, my guilt complex, sensory issues etc - but i wouldn’t give up the special interests, the way i get super super happy about certain things, the way stimming feels, the knowledge i’ve accumulated about my special interests, and the friends i have made because of the autistic community.
i think, rather than a cure, research should be focused on accommodating autistic people, finding helpful and non-abusive therapies/help for the Bad parts (like dealing with sensory issues, anxiety, the mental health conditions like anxiety and depression often comorbid with autism) of autism, and teaching people about autism so that we aren’t so alienated and forgotten about.
really long answer i know! but this is something i think about quite a bit, i could probably say even more to be honest haha
anyway, followers! feel free to reblog this with answers
