Looks like someone wants to go to camp with me tomorrow. <3 #mygirleevee #cutestkittenever #tir2017
Two years ago, I wrote about Joe participating in the Texas Independence Relay for the first time. It’s a 200 mile relay with 40 legs anywhere from 3.5 to almost 7 miles long, and it commemorates a famous retreat that ended in a decisive defeat over the Mexican Army for the cause of Texas independence. I’ve mentioned my discomfort with being considered a Texan before, but I think my knee-jerk reaction of hating everything about Texas has waned. I’ve learned to accept and love certain parts of it.
Joe is training for a full marathon and had a long run of 23 miles planned for this weekend, so he asked the team he joined this year if they’d be cool with him running several legs in a row. They wound up being really excited by the idea, because it gave everyone three hours of downtime in the two rotating vans. I drove to the four different stops that he ran through and made sure he had water or Gatorade as needed. His team this year wasn’t sponsored through his company, so it was a more athletic and social experience.
Along the way, I got to get to know some of Joe’s coworkers who had helped him find this non-company team a little bit better, a few of whom I’ve crossed paths with at various parties before. A few of the team members who I didn’t know very well were extremely funny and sarcastic, which was refreshing. Joe’s humor is more silliness and he tends to be more serious these days. Also, runners are just usually pretty easy-going and kind, especially if they are excited to do well but not counting on any sort of great finishing time.
Joe had offered me up ahead of time not only as a driver, but as a sort of photographer for the team, so I did my best. I’m no sports photographer, which I’ll readily admit. It’s not an art form I appreciate enough to try and excel at (not yet, at least). I also got to stop along the side of the road out in the country and take a few wildflower photos, and I got a couple I like. Joe modeled for me (bottom right in the photos above), and though it’s not my best, I do just like the picture of him. I’ll put up the wildflower photos on their own in a separate post at some point.
200 glorious miles. #comeandtakeit #TIR2017 #idiedtwice
