Lamentations 4:1-2: "Oh, how the gold has dimmed! How the fine gold has changed! The sacred gems are spilled out on every street. The precious children of Zion, equal to the finest gold - alas, how they are now thought of as clay vessels, the potter's work." Today is Tisha beAv, a Jewish fast day commemorating the destruction of Jerusalem and the bitterness of exile. It's traditional to read the book of Lamentations and I was struck by these verses and the image of the precious gems, the children of Zion, strewn like clay shards in the streets. How painful that we see this loss of humanity and disregard for the sanctity of human life around us today.
