The titanium alloy that accounts for 50% of all titanium used globally
Most people think of titanium as one material.
It isn't.
There are over 30 commercially available titanium grades. But one alloy accounts for approximately 50% of all titanium consumed globally across aerospace, oil and gas, marine, and medical applications.
That alloy is Ti-6Al-4V — also called Grade 5 titanium, or simply Ti64.
Why does one alloy dominate so completely?
✅ Tensile strength: 895–965 MPa — comparable to many high-strength steels ✅ Density: 4.43 g/cm³ — roughly 56% of steel ✅ Seawater corrosion resistance: excellent, no coatings required ✅ Heat treatable: strength can be pushed above 1,100 MPa in STA condition ✅ Service temperature: up to 400°C continuous
The combination of high specific strength, seawater corrosion resistance, and heat treatability that no other single titanium grade has matched at commercial scale.
