Was out shopping with mum and came across Lay’s new Taste of Japan limited edition flavoured potato chips. Each 150 grams bag of chips is now on offer at NTUC Fairprice supermarket for S$4.95 so go grab some for the holidays.

The Kobe Wagyu Steak 🥩 flavoured chips bring the bold and juicy taste of flame-grilled steak straight to your snack time. It is also the hardest to find as I had searched a few of the supermarkets and only managed to find it in a less visited supermarket.

Kanazawa Shrimp Roe 🦐 delivers a delicate, briny, and rich umami taste, inspired by the coastal charm of Kanazawa. Don’t miss out on these limited-edition flavours – a true taste of Japan in every bite!

Hokkaido Garlic Butter Scallop 🧄🧈 offers a smoky, buttery, and rich flavour reminiscent of Hokkaido’s grilled scallops. Just like the steak flavoured chips, this one is also hard to find but I got it together with the steak one.

Here is NTUC’s housebrand FairPrice Vegetable Crackers (S$2.55) that mum picked up this 180-gram pack during our weekend shopping. It got bits of spring onion or scallion and chilli mixed inside the crackers.

Always enjoyed window shopping at Don Don Donki, looking at what new Japanese stuffs they have for sale. This Kirara Caviar & Sea Urchin Flavoured Cheese Rice Cracker (S$2) caught my eye, so in it goes into the shopping basket. The rice cracker or arare (あられ) comes filled with a luxurious blend of caviar and sea urchin-infused cheese cream. It is said to be enhanced with savoury bonito powder for a unique flavour profile though all I get is the soy sauce taste typical of these types of rice cracker products. But if you were to ask me if I can taste the caviar and uni flavours, all I can detect is some umaminess, that is all I can say. Would I buy it again? Probably not.

Today’s snacks are from NTUC FairPrice own house brand. They are recommended by my colleague who also help purchased this 100g bag of Roasted Corn Cashews on behalf for me. Retail price is S$4.90 but I got it for half the price of S$2.45. No wonder my colleague snatched up eight packs while another bought four bags. Look just like mini potatoes but are just cashew nuts in a corn-flavoured 🌽 coating with hint of smokiness. Comes in a resealable foil bag but I can easily finish the whole package in one sitting. 😋

To chip in some National Day spirit to Singapore’s SG60 festivities, FairPrice Group announced the launch of a new limited-edition range of SG60 FairPrice potato chips: Black Pepper Crab 🦀, Laksa 🍜, and Kopi ☕. The a-peeling new range, curated to be a mash-up of Singapore’s most iconic flavours, will be available across all FairPrice supermarkets and Cheers convenience stores from July to September 2025.

If you find garden-variety potato chips boring, then have some Kopi Potato Chips. Got this 90g bag on offer for S$1.95; a saving of 55 cents off the retail price of S$2.50. An aromatic cloud of coffee hit the nose when you opened the bag. The potato chips are crisp and flavoured with the taste of caramelized and creamy coffee ☕ like those from a 3 in 1 coffee sachet. What’s not to like of the savoury sweet taste and crispy chips. Thumbs up from both me and my colleague.

Opened up the bag of Black Pepper Crab Potato Chips but was frankly disappointed with the overall flavours. While the potato chips themselves were crispy with a lightly peppery taste, I struggled to detect whatever crabby 🦀 flavour there is. Unless they grind up the crabs into powder, my guess it is hard to replicate the taste of the crustacean in chips that cost just S$1.95.

Laksa (叻沙) is a spicy noodle dish popular in Southeast Asia. Laksa consists of various types of noodles, most commonly thick rice noodles, with toppings such as chicken, prawns or fish. Most variations of laksa 🍜 are prepared with a rich and spicy coconut curry soup. This Laksa Potato Chips tried to imitate that spicy coconutty broth but without much success. The chips are spicy enough with notes of coconut flavour but lack the aromatics fragrances of spices to call it laksa.

Kopi means coffee in Southeast Asia.

Was out shopping at Don Don Donki and spotted this Nissin Cup Noodles Potato Chips - Black Pepper Crab (黑胡椒螃蟹). I know I have seen this flavour in cup noodles form but not in potato chips. Cutting open the bag, the V-cut chips doesn’t look impressive at all with oil stains on the potato chips. Although there doesn’t seem to be much black pepper, it does pack in some spicy heat but with barely any crab 🦀 flavour, let alone any umaminess. I think I will just stick to the noodles in the future.

The other snack that I gotten was this Morinaga Bake Creamy Cheese which looks pretty yummy to me. If I am not mistaken, this item is sold exclusively in Don Don Donki. Sealed inside are ten small blocks of cheesecake-like snack. There is a cheese 🧀 layer comprising of three kinds of cheese – 34% camembert, 45% cream and 6% mascarpone cheese. There is also a white chocolate 🍫 layer sandwiched between two baked layers. Popping one into the mouth, the strong cheese flavour is evident, followed by the creaminess and then the saccharine sweetness hit you. Both me and mum think that it is far too cloying for casual snacking.

Bought these two bags of Lay’s Extra Barbecue and Hot Chilli Squid flavour wavy potato chips. If you asked me what about the “Extra Barbecue” taste in there. Well, it tasted just like the normal smoky BBQ flavoured chips, nothing extra. Tearing open the Hot Chilli Squid chips, I can smell the umami flavours of the squid, coupled with the spicy profile when I bite into the potato chips. Between these two flavours, I preferred the latter for the flavours of the sea.

Came across these limited time flavour chips (S$3.05 each) during my grocery shopping trips at NTUC. The two being Lay’s Stax Truffle and Lay’s Stax Shrimp Tom Yum flavours. The latter is like eating the traditional Thai cuisine in a potato chip. You get the spiciness from the Asian herbs with bursts of citrusy lime in a single crisp. The truffle flavoured one I have not eaten yet, but I guess the taste wouldn’t be too far off from Lay’s Truffle Flavoured Potato Chips.

Now, on to the next bag of chips - Lay’s Salted Egg Flavoured Potato Chips (S$5.30). Tearing open the bag, I was surprised or should I say dismayed to find the chips practically in crumbles. Pinching a small bundle of the potato chips and dropping them into the mouth, there is the familiar salted egg taste with a hint of sweetness in every crunch. While the salted egg flavour is present, it could do with a stronger profile. Overall, I would give it a “don’t buy” rating. In the meantime, I will stick to my truffle flavoured chips.

Just gotten my hands on this 184.2g pack of Truffle Flavoured Potato Chips (S$5.25) by Lay’s from NTUC. Upon tearing open the royal purple packaging, an earthy perfume of the truffle hits my nose. I am not sure if those tiny black specks on the chips are the real deal but the fact that these chips tasted authentic is good enough for me.

Was grocery shopping with mum and came across this made in Malaysia Musang King Durian Choco Cookies 🍪 (S$3.50). It is supposed to be made from 100% Musang King (direct translation “Cat Mountain King”) durian or Mao Shan Wong (猫山王) though I had my doubts. Taste wise, it had chewy chocolate biscuit shell with “durian” filling which is kind of sweet but still within my limit. Each cookie 🍪 is individually sealed for freshness.
