have a snippet of a fic that suddenly grabbed me by the throat (ps feel free to ask me about it 👀)

“Welcome to Kaos Repairs,” he said as he stepped out of the back, hoping that he had the correct amounts of clothing on. Humans were strange about that. “Whatcha need?”

Breakdown blinked at the seeming empty room from behind the counter and disappointment swelled in him before he could stop it. Just the wind again, it seemed.

Then a tiny, so very tiny, hand reached up and gripped the counter, big blue eyes appearing over the edge a second later. Breakdown blinked again.

It was a human sparkling. He had only ever seen them from a distance before. Primus above, how were they that small?

“Excuse me,” the sparkling said carefully, like it had to practice the words. Breakdown could already feel his traitorously soft spark soften. “I need something repaired.”

Breakdown smiled, and he seemed to get it right because the human didn’t run screaming like the last one he smiled at did. “Well, that’s what I do. What needs it?”

this is set several years before the events of TFP, pre-KOBD, with Breakdown seeing Kid Jack and basically going "is anyone going to adopt that" even tho he already has a parent in the picture. i'm vibing hard with it so far

idk, maybe things have changed since I was in middle school, but a lot of the books that I read back then had a lot in common. We made jokes about it as the trend died down, but I want to take a serious look at it now; why were all dystopian novels weirdly libertarian in theme?

In the YA books I've read, The All-Powerful Government controls everything. The Government makes everyone's personal decisions for them. The Government tells you what job to have, whom to marry, sometimes even when to die. You have a hegemonic world where one generic "food" item (like a "nutrition bar" or whatever it would be called) is provided to everyone, and everyone wears a Uniform, and everything is all the same and dictated by the Government.

The general theme is that of choice. In the YA dystopia, he Government is evil because it takes away our choices. In real life, this idea is used all the time in pro-capitalist arguments. The Evil Government will be Too Powerful and, by providing for us, will take away our Choices and force upon us all the same bland clothes and bland food and bland houses. And if people are happy with that, they've been deluded into it. The protagonist often learns about the Old Ways, the age of Choice and Innovation, and wishes to return to that state. These books so often end on the note that things are perfect right now (in real life) and should always stay that way, that the world of the story should regress to before the Government became too powerful. This sounds like a conservative's dream, doesn't it?

These stories construct an artificial binary between a world where everyone is provided for and a world where people have to do it all themselves. They specifically demonize social welfare by twisting it into the exact horror conservatives paint it as. They play out the fearmongering speculation of the ""horrors of socialism."" I know that many of these authors are just derivative of themselves and of the many better dystopians before them (like the hunger games and 1984), but you have to wonder why they did this. Were most of them even aware of this? Were they just regurgitating capitalist propaganda that they didn't even recognize for what it was? Or did at least some of them know exactly what they were doing?
