scene parallels in Titli (2002)
🦋Titli🦋
I've been wanting to make this post for a while, but I haven't really been able to find the correct words.
(If you can't be bothered to read the whole thing, the gist of it is that I'd like for everyone to to call me "Titli" now, as that is my name)
My name is Titli. (Well, if you want to get technical, Titli is one of my names, because in my culture, most people have a legal name and then also a ‘home’ name for their friends and family, but I digress)
I’ve gone by the name ‘Tee’ online for as long as I can remember. I’ve also gone out of my way, since I was maybe ten, to ask new people who met me to call me ‘Tee’ rather than Titli, or by my legal name.
And at the time, I justified this choice by saying ‘well, Tee is a nickname for Titli, it’s basically a short version!’.
But I know that’s not entirely true. In my mind, when I first decided to go by the name, Tee was never really just the ‘short’ version of Titli, it was the white version. It was the version of the name that my English classmates would be able to pronounce, that they wouldn’t laugh at, or consider weird.
I’ve not liked my Indian-ness for a very long time now. I still don’t, fully. I've been trying to get better at accepting it, but it's hard.
And I think this might help.
My name is Titli. It’s a beautiful name. It means ‘butterfly’ in Hindi and in Bengali (and presumably quite a few other Indian languages, but I don’t speak those). And from now on, I’d like to start going by Titli instead of Tee. It’s my name.
Now, this isn't quite as dramatic as 'I want to sever all ties to nickname Tee forever and ever!'. If you've known me as Tee, before this, I don't mind you still calling me by that nickname.
I'd just like you to acknowledge that Tee is still just a nickname and my real name is Titli.
(I know it doesn't make much of a difference outwardly, but knowing that y'all know the distinction in your heads means a lot to me)
