Other than accepting everything Ken Levine says as canon?I honestly don’t consider Ryan a villain. I very much believe that when he was giving his famous speech at the end of the game, he was hoping that Jack would choose not to be a slave. That he had hubris enough to think that Jack could break WYK with nothing but his own mind, could realise that he was being ordered to kill his father and that he would be able to simply say “no.” I think his methods were questionable, of course, and he might have gone a little mad there at the end, but I don’t think he wanted to kill Jack, and I don’t think that he wanted Jack to kill him. Only that a world in which his son was unable to even say no to someone was a world in which he did not want to live. I don’t know if that’s unpopular, but I don’t think it’s especially mainstream, so there it is.
