“ I miss you (she dies if the ring breaks. What an interesting twist to have her die first mm?) ” — pandoragu
He was shattered when the realization struck him. Almost as shattered as the ring that was crumbling away into dust now in his hands. The cold, lifeless body lying next to him, he couldn’t help but lose himself in his sadness, in his anger..
None of the attackers that had taken her from him survived.
1 year later
It had become a sad ritual of his, to come here to this spot. In the southern parts of the Eternian continent, in a desolated area only few ever came. A place where once the birth village of the swordmaster existed. Before the plague wiped it off the face of this earth…
He did not know why he had done so, but the former commander of the Black Blades had decided to bury the remains of his beloved here.
And just like every week since then, he had come to see her, unable to let go. Only that this time… this time it was special.
"Has it already been a year, huh…?"
The tired voice of the swordmaster fell unheard into the silence of this dead village. Would she have recognised him were she still alive, as he was now? His hair had become messy and unkempt, and his eyes stared weary at the empty space in front of the small gravestone marking her final resting place.
For a while, he just sat there in silence, but before long, the man was crying bitter tears. No words left his lips after that, except for these:
"I’m so sorry my love…"
5 years later
"Edea has a daughter now. I’m sure you’d be delighted to see the two. She looks so grown up with the child in her arms… - It’s hard to believe she’s still the same girl I used to train. You know, back when I still ran the dojo…"
He had not visited her grave in months. Not because he hadn’t wanted to, oh no. He still felt that he should be here at least once every week. But Edea and everyone else had made him promise not to.
'You need to let go finally, master.' 'It has been over 4 years now, you should learn to live your life again.' 'She won't come back, Kamiizumi, no matter how much you mourn.' 'She wouldn't have wanted you to live like this.'
The list was endless. Everyone wanted for him to go back to being the man he once was after four years of grieving, and he eventually gave him. He promised he’d try not to grieve anymore.
He tried to get his life back together.
And now, on the day marking the fifth year since her death, he wanted to tell her about it.
"…she asked me to become the child’s godfather… I… I could not accept it. The girl deserves a godfather that can look after himself, and… you know I am not that kinda man anymore. I… I wouldn’t want to drag the child down with me…"
He looked much better than when he last was here, at least at first glance. But his eyes… His eyes showed that it was not so. Inside, the man was as empty as he had been half a year ago. A burned out shell of a once great man.
A broken man… - Because fate had taken from him what he cherished most.
10 years later
"Hey… did you miss me… Melinoe…?"
The voice of the man is weak, very weak. His form, skinny and pale as one would come to expect of a man close to his end.
Sickness had taken a great toll out of him, he could not deny it.
They had told him in the healing tower that he was no longer to leave the facility. His former student Edea Lee had given appropriate orders to ensure he’d stay. So that he would at least have it comfortable for the last three months they expected him to live.
Three months… - that had been about five months ago. He had managed to hold on for longer than they had still given him credit for.
But they had been very empty five months. Barely anyone spared him the time to visit and check on him. Only Konoe came by frequently, telling him about the world outside and what happened to it. And also about how happy her marriage made her.
He was glad for the girl, and he enjoyed her visits, even though ultimately, he waited for someone else to visit.
But that certain someone apparently refused to come see him in the Healing Tower. And so, before he even knew it, the day had been only a week away.
The tenth anniversary of Melinoe’s death.
Defying the orders of Head Nurse Prell and the wishes of Edea, he had snuck out of the tower, and carried his now frail body all the way to the south here.
After all, he couldn’t just leave her alone on this day, no?
The cold wind felt like needles on his skin as he sat in the snow in front of the weathered gravestone.
He could feel that he didn’t have much time left.
"10 years… 10 long years… I have made you wait far too long…"
He can feel his breath growing weaker, and the cold sinking into his bones. His old and weakened body cannot resist the elements in the least anymore. His fingers have already started to go numb.
"Hey… can you tell me… if there is a life… after the life…? I want to believe so… I want to believe so, and see you again there… And I hope… you would still… have me… after all these long… years…"
His vision starts to blur. It won’t be long now. Finally.
"I’m… I’m coming… to see you… now… Meli..noe… and tell you… tell you… what I… what I… couldn’t… all these… ten… years…"
'I want to tell you again that I love you.'
It is the last thought going through his mind before Nobotsuna Kamiizumi loses his consciousness.
And with that, he’d finally be cured of it.
This sickness called loneliness.

It had been quite the heavy burden to bear, when he had slain the young shepherd during his battle against Edea and her group. It had been his mission to stop the wind vestal on her way to prevent more causalities among the asterisk bearers, but he had not wanted to kill any of them.
However, seeing the boy use the asterisk that he and his friends had taken from the by then likely not even cold yet hands of his dearest student Einheria, he had lost his calm.
Lacking restraint, he had abandoned his habit of countering attacks and openly charged the boy. And he had caught him far more easily than he should have been able to.
A true wielder of the valkyrie asterisk would have been able to evade an attack like that. But it was obvious that the boy had been a complete amateur.
And that was exactly why no student got to try and asterisk before having been prepared for how to handle it. Because if they were unprepared… people died.
He could not bring himself to say anything as he visited the lad’s grave today, on the first anniversary of this dark day.
He didn’t feel like he could say anything, that he didn’t deserve to say anything.

Whenever he came here, he did not talk about what happened back then, but instead of other matters. The year before he had been able to report about Edea giving birth to a daughter, and the year before that, about the peace in Eisen that had finally been reached.
But never about that day. No matter how often he relived it in his mind and how he blamed himself for his lack of restraint.

The man shuffles in his pocket for a bit before he procures a picture showing a woman holding an infant with brown hair, holding a plush sheep. Placing it close to the withered gravestone, he then continues to speak, with a faint smile:
“Her son… she named him Tiz. After you, boy.”
Because just like him, she could never forget the young shepherd…

He still couldn’t really believe it, but it had already been a year, and no amount of disbelief would change what had happened.
The two gravestones before him were a silent testimony to that.
Edea Lee and her husband were dead.
And the reason was almost ridiculous, really.
After all, for a warrior like her, a death on the battlefield would not have been all too surprising, and given her mother’s condition, he would have even understood if an illness had claimed her, but no.
She had survived childbirth without any complications, had never sustained a fatal injury in battle, and had not even been the target of any assassins. No, none of that had ended her life.
It had been an accident. A stupid accident.
Her airship’s engine had failed, and the couple had crashed into a mountainside. Not even five minutes away from Eternia, and their home.
A simple technical failure had ended her life.
It was not right. It was not fair.
“…We all miss you Edea… very much… Braev is still devastated and unable to attend to his duties… and your mother… it seems she might soon join you… According to Head Nurse Prell, her condition has taken another turn for the worse lately… It is as if she has given up after you passed…”
With a sigh, the man lowered his head as if to hide his tears from the inanimate gravestone.
“I’m sorry I could not protect them my child… I’m sorry…”
For a while he seems locked in his remorse, before then he gets a hold of himself again, and places a small picture between both gravestones.
“I… I promise you I will always protect your greatest treasure… Always, Edea.”

“Unca Nobotsuna…? Why are we here? It’s cold… I don’t like it here…”
“We’re hear to visit someone very special my dear child… Come along now, okay…?”
Lysandra didn’t like places like this one. Especially not when it was snowing. Why couldn’t they have come another day instead? But her Unca had been insistent on coming today… So she had to come along with him and Auntie.
Kamiizumi was carefully making his way through the snow, towards the two graves. It had five years now, and in his eyes it was the time now for the child to learn the truth. She was a clever and bright child… She would be able to handle it. And he would help her.
Other than usually, he did not kneel down in front of the two gravestones when he reached them, no, today he sat down and gestured for the child to sit in his lap. It would be less cold that way for her.
So when she had sat down as instructed, the swordmaster tugged her into his cloak and held her close to keep her warm.
And also so this hurt a little bit less.
“Lysandra… Do you know who is buried here…?”
“Nuh-uh, unca.”
“Well… my dear… these here… are the graves of your Daddy… and your Mommy Edea…”
He held the child even a bit closer as he spoke these words. It was a hard task, showing her this sight… The snow covered graves, with the withered engravings… It certainly wasn’t easy.
“Daddy… and Mommy…?”
“Yes Lysandra… Your parents.”
“But… aren’t Unca Nobotsuna and Auntie Melly my parents…?”
“Yes hon… we are too… But these… are your real parents… Your real mommy, and your real daddy. Here is where they rest… So we can visit them and remember them.”
Looking up at her unca with big and bright eyes, the young girl seemed confused for a moment, before she then shuffled herself out of bis cloak and knelt directly before her mothers gravestone.
What followed next touched the swordmasters heart so deep, it let him burst into tears.
With her eyes closed, the child hugged the cold, snow covered gravestone and held it close while she spoke words that moved to tears.
“Good night Mommy… I love you.”
10 Years Later
“Aunt Melly? What… what was my mother like…”
It had become a regular thing for the small family to come visit the graves in the last few years, but this was the first time that the by now almost eleven year old Lysandra had asked any question about how her parents were like.
“Edea… your mother… She was very strong and skilled with her weapon. She was your uncle’s best student. A bright and beautiful woman, but at times a bit too idealistic… But a good person nontheless. A very good person. Everyone was proud of her and liked her.”
“…Yes she truly was very popular… and quite talented. Like you, my little angel.“
The swordmaster quietly ruffled the girl’s blond hair affectionately as he spoke those words, something which the girl did not like, causing her to duck her head out of her uncle’s reach.
”…Uncle Nobotsuna, please, not my hair…“
"Haha, forgive me Lysandra. It is just that you resemble your mother very much…”
The girl looked up at the father figure in her life, the man who had raised her in place of her parents after they died and her grand-parents couldn’t do so.
Come to think of her grand-parents…
“Uncle Nobotsuna, Aunt Melly…? Is it… is it okay if we go to visit grandma and grandpa later as well…?”
“Of course Lysandra. Of course.”
Now it was her aunts turn to blow a soft and gentle kiss onto the girl’s hair, gently holding her head as she did so. This time however, the child does not object to it.
“But before we go, dear, let’s pay our respects to your parents, alright?”
An enthusiastic nod follows before the three silent stand before the two graves and pray. And they would do the same thing when they would reach the graves of Mahzer and Braev.
It was the least that Nobotsuna Kamiizumi owed to his late friend and his old love.
To keep them in his heart forever - just like he did with Edea.

The final matchstick AU: It had been three years already since Mahzer Lee had passed away due to her illness, leaving behind her daughter Edea and her husband Braev, the grand marschall of the duchy of Eternia. Up until that day, Edea had enjoyed the life of a princess, sheltered by her father’s status and the servants at Central Command, with regular visits to her mother. But her death had changed everything…
With his wife having come down with the disease soon after the pregnancy, Braev had always silently blamed young Edea for the state of health Mahzer was in, but guided by her kindness, he had never taken it out on the child, allowing her to live a good life. The loss of his beloved wife, his one and all, his everything however had been too much for the man to take. Driven mad by the grief, the grand marschall took his sorrow and grief out on the innocent child, no longer holding back in any way.
Soon, Edea was no longer allowed to see her friends or train with her master. No longer could she eat sweets or spend her time shopping. She was reduced to less than a servant, a lowly maid worked to the bone day by day. Never allowed rest, pushed around by the servants that once cared for her, abandoned by her father.
Three years had the girl been driven closer and closer to the edge. Three years full of sorrow, loneliness and hardship.
Three years.
Until she couldn’t take it anymore.
It had been remarkably easy for her to sneak into her father’s bedroom. After all, she still knew all those secret passages throughout Central Command from the brighter days. And now she was standing there, holding a single match in her hands.
"…did you ever really love me, father…? Was I always just the reason mother fell sick to you…? Have you… have you blamed me for her death all these years…?"
The once strong and cheerful voice had grown weak and broken over the years, barely audible now. Her words thus remained unheard by the templar, continuing to sleep peacefully while his malnourished, mistreated daughter looked at him with a blank expression.
"Why did you never love me, father…? Have I not been a good daughter…? Haven’t I never resisted you…?"
The plain dress Edea wore was riddled with dirt and smear, and even some blood from when this one servant had hit her for no reason a few months ago. She hadn’t been allowed to wash it since.
"Why can’t you care for me like you do for Alternis, father…? Is it true you forbid him to see me…? That you told him to forget about me…?"
Her blonde hair that used to be adorned by the ribbon her father had bought her when she was still but an innocent, unknowing child hung tousled and dirty down to her shoulders, and her eyes, once so full of wonder and joy, were dull and cold as ice.
She couldn’t even cry anymore.
"Is it true you call him son…? Him, that you just picked up from the slums…? And that you had Einheria publically punished for standing up to you on my behalf…?"
From the gossip she had heard the servants exchange while bullying her she had only been able to piece together that the valkyrie had spoken in her defense, asking the templar to release his daughter - after that, the rumours the servants spread had ranged from “removed from duty” to “whiped in public” and “exiled from Eternia”.
Edea had stopped caring what was the truth. She had lost the ability to care in these three years. Too hard had the times been, to broken was her spirit. And noone was there to help her anymore. Even master Kamiizumi had left her behind, leaving Eternia mere weeks after her mother’s death.
"Father… do you know… what hell is…? I do… You have put me in it for three years… It would be unfair not to return the favour…"
For the first time in three years, Edea Lee smiled.
It was a wicked, twisted smile, one riddled with pain and sorrow, but a smile nontheless.
Edea Lee smiled as she lighted the lone matchstick and set fire to her father’s room.
——
Five days after the incident, the swordmaster Nobotsuna Kamiizumi returned to the duchy of Eternia. He had been called back by the council of six, in order to take up the seat of the deceased templar Braev Lee.
But he didn’t return for this old and broken friendships sake.
He had returned so he could take care of the poor child that had almost burned to death that night but survived. None of the servants of soldiers at Central Command had been able to identify her, but Kamiizumi knew who she was. He felt it in his hurting heart.
Gently, so as not to wake the unconscious, comatose girl covered in burn marks he sat down at the sat of her bed, carefully reaching for her small and frail hand to hold it.
Silently tears fell as he spoke to the girl with a weak and pained voice.
"I’m back, Edea… Forgive me for being so late… I failed to protect you…"

Sailing the seas AU: Fate can sometimes take strange paths. One moment, the shepherd and the swordmaster had been talking in Eternian Central Command, the other the two had found themselves whisked away to a beach on a far off island. Just like that.
Now, for Tiz Arrior, this hadn’t been quite so disturbing. Having traveled through several worlds before and thus made some experiences with dimensional travel, it was not too hard to come to terms with stranding in another one.
Nobotsuna Kamiizumi on the other hand… Well, the older man had a hard time getting to terms with this new development. He kinda felt lost here, on this strange island called Jaya that was apparently run by pirates or something the like. Not that he had anything against pirates. They were quite reliable, as Suleiman and later Barbarosa had proven. It just was odd to him.
And after a week of being stranded, things got even odder, when a small ship with an equally small pirate crew aboard landed on the beach. A very… strange pirate crew.
He quickly got apprehended by a swordsman that wielded three blades - the first time he had seen anything the like, which made this intriguing - and challenged to a duel, while the shepherd was just left wondering about a strange little creature that seemed to be a mix between a reinder and a man? And this boy over there had quite the strange long nose, too…
Still, with Tiz Arrior being Tiz Arrior, it didn’t take long for the boy to become friends with this strange band, and before Kamiizumi had even finished his match with the three sword wielder, they had ended up invited to join the crew for their next journey.
"They’re going to the Sky Islands, Kamiizumi-San! Can you imagine that, islands in the sky? I’d love to see those!"
The swordmaster wasn’t equally euphorious about this possibility and hesitated, at least until the swordsman of that crew invited him as well - as a formidable training partner. How could he have declined that offer?
And besides, the lad seemed overjoyed to board this ship full of strange people, and sail the oceans with them.
Kamiizumi could only wonder if perhaps this had to do with the ship’s figurehead depicting a sheep?
Be that as it may, later that day the unlikely pair from Luxendarc set off to an adventure in this strange world, sailing on the Flying Lamb.

The Last Bell Rung AU: It had been just a small funeral service. A nice little service. One that really helped people to say goodbye to the young man. Even if he was not of this world originally, many came to say their goodbyes. Even his would-be adopted mother had come to say goodbye to the lad they knew as “Ringabel”.
Mahzer had cried during the service, having a hard time to accept the loss of the young boy. Not because she had come to know him really well, and not because he was an alternate version of her actual adopted son Alternis. But because he mattered a lot to her dear daughter Edea. And when her daughter could not cry for her loss, she had done so in her stead.
Gently did the swordmaster wipe the tear away from the golden eyes of his once beloved Mahzer. After all, he had vowed to not give her any reason to shed tears anymore. He would keep her daughter safe. It was the very least he could do for the two of them.
When the service had ended, Nobotsuna Kamiizumi left the church and joined the remaining three Warriors of Light. Standing next to Edea, he simply nodded to her. The agreement had been made before the service, and there was no reason to change it. 'I am lost.'
That was her first thought upon waking up. She had not known then how true it was.
It was a cold, blustery evening when she woke up, all alone in a tiny room. The room felt as empty as her stomach now. Her muscles felt weak, and she, groggy. ‘How long have I been asleep? Where am I, as well?’
She went to rub her face and noticed a medical bracelet on her wrist. She didn’t remember being hospitalized, but read the label anyways: ‘Special Condition: Undead Patient- Do not use White Magic or Potion’.
“What the hell? Since when does anyone but a handful of mages have access to that information? What kind of hospital is this…? At least I don’t seem to be hooked to anything but a… heart monitor, I think?”
She carefully pulled off the little clamp on her finger, likely a new device thanks to the study of the Earth Crystal. She honestly didn’t much understand it herself, but realized that there had been great strides in medical technology because of it.
At that, she attempted to get out of the bed, but her legs would barely move. It was unlikely she would be able to balance herself at all, let alone walk. Something was off about this body. In fact, she didn’t remember transferring to this one at all. She likely hadn’t occupied it long before sleeping; none of her piercings had been done again. If something were wrong with this body, why didn’t they just find a new one for her? It was obvious they at least knew a little of her condition.
Wait, perhaps she used too much energy? ‘Yes, Phylacteries can break from overuse, so it’s possible I was sent into a sort of coma… How long was I out?’
Before she could finish that thought, however, a medical team burst through the door in a panic. They rushed around her, screaming that they thought she had passed, but out of the corner of her eye, she spotted someone familiar. It was Edea!
"E-Edea! Oh, how good it is to see a welcome face!" The figure frowned, however, and approached slowly. Upon closer look, this woman wasn’t Edea, not as she remembered her, no. This woman was a good decade or so older than her Edea, and her eyes were a steely blue.
"I’m sorry, but I’m not who you think I am. My name is Lysandra. Edea is my mother’s name. I was here to visit her when I heard the commotion."
Melly sat there in shock for a few moments. “A-alright… Tell me, dear, your mother hasn’t fallen to the same illness as your grandmother, has she?”
Lysandra jumped at the question. “Oh, oh no! No, she came here for a simple check-up. She said she had business to attend to afterwards as we-“
Speak of the devil, another woman came through the door. This woman looked like Edea as well, but far more aged. Yet the woman held a fierce air as well. When she turned to look at Melly, however, the woman’s eyes were filled with shock as she ran over to give Melly a hearty hug.
"Oh, Melly, you’re awake! We’ve waited so long!"
The woman may have looked happy, but those words paralyzed the Lich. Much time had passed indeed. “H-how long have you waited exactly…?”
Edea let go of the woman and held her shoulders at arm’s length. Her expression darkened. “Melly… I don’t know how to put this any other way… You’ve been asleep over thirty years… I’m sorry, I understand that this is a lot to take in.”
She chuckled a bit, feeling as if her mind had cracked. Thirty years?! Thirty. Years. How much had changed since then? Where was everyone? … Where was Nobutsuna?!
In a joking tone, though her mind was screaming, she asked of Edea, “My word, what does Nobutsuna look like by now? Is he still teaching? Tell me, where is he now, Edea?”
"…"
"Edea?"
"………"
“Answer me, Edea.”
Edea sighed deeply before delving into her explanation. “I’m afraid… Ma-… Kamiizumi has since passed. He… he came here to visit you as much as he could. Practically every day. He was the one who found you, crumpled up in the snow. No one could figure out how to wake you, so we brought you here, to the Healing Tower.”
She clasped her hands together now, holding her face against her wrists. “He stood by your side the whole time. We could barely pry him away at first, but we needed him… We all knew he needed you more. He was found at your side when he left this world. He could never just leave you alone.”
All Melly could do was sit there as the tears formed and the realization hit her. She slumped back into her bed, covering her face with her arm. “I… I think I’m going to rest for a bit longer. Please, leave me be.”
The two blondes quickly stood up to leave, almost in unison. Edea, however, stopped at the door to pose a question. “When should we send to wake you up?”
"Don’t."
"I’m sorry, would you like to have an alarm, then?"
"No. Do not… wake me up."
Edea closed the door slowly, defeated. “…I see.”
As Melly laid in the lonely bed, all she could think of were but a few words: ‘I’m so sorry, Nobutsuna… I abandoned you.’

Song: The Divine Suicide Of K. — Protest The Hero
Earth Vestal AU: Years ago, Mahzer had another child from a previous relationship before she met Braev — but the child was taken by the Orthodoxy, and never seen from again.
When Braev seized the Orthodoxy and invaded with his armies, the Earth Vestal Edea Oblige resisted and refused to surrender. She and her sisters fled and hid in the mountains, forever hunted by the Eternian forces.
In their absence, the Earth Crystal dimmed and corrupted, shriveling the green of the valleys and turning Eternia into an icy wasteland. Rumors began to spread that the Earth Vestal had cursed them as a result of the Orthodoxy’s fall, and many began to call for her head, even though the Templar did not condone such ideas.
Eventually, Edea was caught and imprisoned, but the people of Eternia were not satisfied with merely holding her in a cell. When faced with threats of rebellion and unrest in his troops, Braev reluctantly agreed to have the Earth Vestal publicly executed.
Edea holds her head high as she is escorted to the executioner’s block, with the crowds of Eternians yelling and cursing her. She gives a sympathetic look to Nobutsuna Kamiizumi, whom she can tell is unhappy with the turn of events. With a brave smile, and ignoring all those who call for her death, the young woman sets her chin down on the block.
“May the Crystals keep me safe.”
[[I feel I should be sorry about this, but… I just can’t help myself, I gotta work with this. Sorry Edea^^“]]
This whole thing felt wrong.
Not just that he did not approve of the decision to give in to the bloodlusty people and execute the vestal, but there was something else too… Something that deeply disturbed him.
Something just felt absolutely wrong about this.
He just couldn’t point his finger at it.
That is, until the young woman had placed her chin down on the block and her long hair parted down her neck, revealing what it had hidden.
That birthmark. The birthmark shaped like a teardrop.
He would recognise that birthmark anywhere. After all, he had spent the past fifteen years looking for this mark. After all, it had never left his mind, never left his dreams. He had longed to see that birthmark again…
But he did not have time to lose himself in thoughts now. Every second counted now, and the consequences did not matter. Even if he would be branded a traitor now… He had to do this.
The exectutioner had already lifted his axe and was ready to let it fall down upon the poor vestals neck when the swordmaster drew his blade and without hesitation cut him down, much to the shock of the crowd.
The executioner promptly dropped his axe and screamed out in pain. The cuts may not have been deep, but sufficient to stop this madness.
"Nobutsuna! What is the meaning of this? Explain yourself!”
It was the grand marschal himself that raised his voice now over the crowd that promptly fell silent. He stood on the other end of the execution plattform. The guards around him had drawn their weapon, but Braev yet told them to stand down. He wanted to hear his old companion explain himself first.
“Braev, it is her. Her! Did you not see the birthmark on her neck? It’s her! Her!”
“Nobutsuna, you’re not making sense. Calm down! And put your weapon away.”
“No Braev, I can’t do that. I have finally found her, after fifteen years! You… you cannot take her from me! Not now!”
“Nobutsuna, cease this madness! Noone knows what you’re talking about! Don’t force me to treat you as a traitor!”
“…Mahzer knows. Mahzer will understand. I am sure of it!”
“Nobutsuna, stop!”
But it was too late. The swordmaster had alreay grabbed the bound earth vestal and throw her over his shoulder before jumping down the back of the plattform, where the soldiers stood.
“H…hey, unhand me! I don’t want to keep running away!”
The protests of Edea Oblige fall on deaf ears. With his blade still in hand, the swordmaster strikes the soldiers in front of him as dangerous, and so they move aside, opening a path for their commanding officer.
All but one.
“Icannotletyoufreethevestalcaptain.”
Kikyo Konoe, the stealth specialist from his very own unit had decided to stand in her captain’s way. She, who had always harbored a hatred for the orthodoxy and the vestals, and who had been the one to find the hiding place of the earth vestal.
It was only natural for her to disapprove with his decision.
“Kikyo, please, you have to believe me, it… it is her. She is the one.”
“…”
“Kikyo, I beg of you! You are like a daughter to me, I do not wish to fight you!”
“…Captain…Youknowwhatyouareaskingofme,yes?”
The swordmaster could already hear Braev shouting others to capture him - if necessary by use of lethal force. The soldiers would soon recall just whom they swore loyality to.
“…I wouldn’t do so if I wasn’t certain Kikyo… She… she is…” - “Put me down, finally! Put me down!” - “…she has to be… the daughter of Mahzer and…” - “I said: Put. Me. Down!”
Her struggling cuts the swordmasters words off, but the ninja already understood. Her commander had talked about this to her so often in the past…
Before the approaching soldiers knew just what had happened, swordmaster Nobotsuna Kamiizumi carrying the earth vestal Edea Oblige and ninja Kikyo Konoe had vanished using one of Kikyo’s smoke bombs.
~~~~
Hours later, Mahzer Lee would learn of the incident while being visited ber husband at the Healing tower. When she learned of the swordmaster’s words, the woman fell to her knees with tears in her eyes.
Her words then allowed Braev to fully understand the swordmaster’s actions.
“She’s alive… Our daughter still lives… Oh Nobutsuna…”
The next day, the Council of Six charged Nobutsuna Kamiizumi and Kikyo Konoe with high treason and placed them on the list of fugitive targets.
The hunt began anew.
Longing Lovers AU: After having been a couple for several years now, Melinoe decides to leave on a journey and for the first time since they have gotten together, Nobotsuna does not accompany her.
Soon, however, he comes to regret this, for her journey grows longer than anticipated, and despite regular contact using letters, his longing for the woman he loves grows stronger every day.
In the silence of his empty chamber, he recalls the times that they spent together, noticing every detail of the silence around him as if it were the melody that had always accompanied their time together.
The world had gotten loud in the past few years, with technology advancing more and more, so he enjoyed this silence. Almost as much as he enjoyed listening to her, be it when she spoke or when she simply was herself. The sound of her breathing, the sound of her turning around while asleep… So many wonderful, small and silent sounds that he now missed.
Ah… if only she could hear him now…
He had quickly grown to love her, not only for how she was but also for the fact that she had quickly learned to see through him so to speak, to see how he truly was underneath. That by doing so, she had allowed for him to be just who he was, not who people were expecting him to be when he was around her.
Truly, in a sense, he had become like glass to her he supposed, as she could look through his worries and fears as she pleased. She could even see the ghosts of regret that followed him at times as they did any warrior and dispell them with such ease it was hard to believe she wasn’t a divine being at times.
If only she could look at him now with her wonderful eyes, those eyes he didn’t often enough praise for their beauty and intelligence. If only she could see him, could look at him now, and see how much he loved her, how he missed her.
But sadly she was not here.
Oh if only she could come now and take him into her arms and never let him go again, if only she could show him how much she loved him now.
In this cold land full of soldiers he could not help but think of her all the time. No matter what was said, what decisions were made, what nonsense declared, everything still stayed the same for him:
He loved her, and he missed her.
And especially today he would have loved nothing more than to be with her.
Never did she leave his thoughts, and never did he stop to desire her, and yet still…
Today as well, he would not be able to see her.
But he would not have to wait much longer, oh no.
With the letter announcing her return within the next week in his hand, the swordmaster sat at the window and looked out at Eternia.
And on his lips was a blissful smile.
Melinoe was finally coming home to him.
A Heated Struggle AU: So it had come to this. After the Wind Vestal and her posse had already awakened two of the crystals, they had come here to Eisen, to go after the third one. And on their way to seek it out, they had done as they already had in Ancheim and Florem:
They had slain officers of the Eternian Forces.
Hearing of Khint’s demise had been painful - hearing of Einheria’s heart shattering. Even more so that Edea was part of the vestal’s group, along with someone that greatly resembled young Alternis.
He had already approached Edea and her companions, and tried to talk sense into her. He knew she would not understand right away, but he had at least hoped to get her to think and hopefully reconsider in time.
But she had failed to do so, or to convince her travelling companions. And now, these four had definitely gone too far…
As if Khint and Einheria had not been enough, they had now slain Kikyo.
Enraged, the swordmaster had given pursuit, and chased them down to the depths of the Mythril Mines. And even deeper into the mountain.
And now there they were, surrounded by magma and standing on the rocky ground. Weapons drawn, and the sweat glistening on their foreheads.
“Wind Vestal! You and your allies shall pay for your crimes and the blood you have shed! Or I shall no longer be Nobotsuna Kamiizumi, Commander of the First Division of the Eternian Forces!”
The Final Story AU: For years Nobotsuna Kamiizumi had been asking his dear Melinoe for stories about her time as a human, and persistenly she had turned him down time after time.
And eventually, the man had decided to give up asking her about her past - and to instead enjoy the present he got to share with her. And together they lived many a good year.
But alas, as is the fate when a human and someone untouched by age come together, there inevitably had to come a time when such times would have to end.
For the wheel of time did not stop for the people around those that were immortal, and old age still weakened their bodies.
In recent years, it had become more and more common for the former swordmaster to fall sick, and visits to the Healing Tower had slowly evolved from an eventuality to a regular occurence.
Yet still, even if he could no longer offer her all she desired, Melinoe had stuck with him throughout all these years. Her never aging body a constant support for his as it grew weaker by the years.
But now, the time of parting was upon them.
Recovering from the weakness that had befallen his body was out of question. No Magic from the Healing Tower could compete against the inevitability of age slowly corroding a body. And now age had come to claim him.
Melinoe had insisted that he would not be left to rot away in a bed in the facility until his brain ceased functioning for good, no. She had wished for him to see the outside world once more before he passed, to see the world he had always strived to protect before his final time to close his eyes had come.
And so they sat here now… in front of a small camp fire just outside Melinoe’s home. And Nobotsuna rested his head on his beloved’s lap, covered with a blanket while he looked up to the stars in the night sky.
“You know… Melinoe… it… it has been a good life… I do not regret meeting you… I never will… and I’ll forever be thankful… for you allowing me… to grow old at your side…”
“Nobotsuna… you…”
“No… it is alright my love… I… I am glad for the life I had… and that you chose me…”
“…”
“The stars… they are quite beautiful… are they not…?”
“…Listen to me Nobotsuna… Listen to my story… This may be the last chance for me to tell you…”
It must have seemed like hours as she spoke, her gaze fixed on the dancing flames of the campfire the entire time. She spoke of her circumstances as she grew up, of how she received her scars, how she found a way to get through it all, how she found someone that desired her no matter what… and of her daughter. And how it all came apart in the blink of an eye.
Kamiizumi had always known that he was by far not the first man that she had loved. He knew that. And he had overcome his initial jealousy at the thought a long time ago.
But never had he known about her daughter. About the child she once had, and that was taken from her in such a tragical fashion. And how then she had gained an immortality she never desired, and lost the ability to have another child forever.
Tears were in the old man’s eyes as he looked no longer up to the stars above but to her.
“Melinoe… I… I promise you… if there truly is an afterlife… then I shall seek out your dear Inesa… and together with her I shall wait for you… No matter how long it will take… - For I will always… love you…”
“…Nobotsuna… you can be such an idiot at times… such a loveable idiot…”
Struggling heavily with the task, the man now tried to sit up, a task he could only perform once she supported him with her arms. But once he was more or less sitting, still supported by her arms and leaning onto her, Nobotsuna Kamiizumi managed to give his beloved a kiss.
One final kiss, after saying the words he so loved to say once more:
No More Carefree Laughter AU (bad end to our Modern AU): Walking through this empty house was the most depressing thing he had ever done. Because every spot he saw reminded him of the cheerful moments that had happened in these rooms.
There was the couch, on which he used to sit with Kikyo so many times bonding over the shows she liked after they had adopted her. Over there was the small cabinet with the door that the neighbour’s boy Suleiman broke while playing one of his infamous rounds of tag with Kikyo, his “sister”. There was the armchair that his beloved Melinoe used to sit in and read books while the children played.
And this was just the living room. The other rooms weren’t kinder to him in the least.
The dining room, where a proud and ambitious Kikyo had told them of her plans at her sixteenth birthday. Of how she wanted to travel with Suleiman, Edea and Victoria to Caldis and study there for a few years. He could still remember the pride he had felt that day.
Or the kitchen, where the children’s drawings still hung at the refrigerator’s door and where dishes were cooked by them all that not only filled the stomach but also pleased the heart. Where they could laugh untroubled at small mishaps like when he forgot to put the eggs into the chocolate cake.
But now there wasn’t any laughter.
Only empty silence…
Not even in the garden, where the children always used to play, was any sound to be heard. No happy laughter from the kids, no delighted giggle from their mother as she watched them over the brim of her book, no flustered giggle of her like when the two of them joined each another in the hot tub.
Nothing.
And seeing all the places, just made it all the more depressing. The tree with the swing that Kikyo often retreated to when she wanted to be alone. The deck chair Melly used to love reading in. The broken shingle in the fence from when he had to chase Konoe’s first love away after that miserable and despicable person so rudely broke her heart. The small pond where Suleiman would sail little self-made boats together with their daughter. The hot tub where, despite having been told they could never have children, he and Melly conceived their adorable twins Isaac and Saria…
But they were all gone.
Kikyo was still in Caldis, and excelling at her studies, with Suleiman and her other friends.
And the twins…
They had left the house as well when Melinoe left him.
He knew it had been his fault. He was fully aware of the mistake he made and regreted it every minute of his now miserable existance. But regret didn’t dry the tears in his eyes, or fill the hole in his heart.
If only he had never slept with Mahzer that night…
There was no excuse for that, none. And the fact that he was heavily drunk that night was no excuse either.
He had messed up. He had destroyed their happiness. And now there only was emptyness, nothing left to be said.
Only one thing remained.
Knowing himself and knowing Melinoe, and being aware of their respective situations, this was the best thing he could do.
He would have to go.
So that she and the twins could return to the house and live a good life again.
And no matter how much it pained him, he had to be prepared for the moment where Melinoe would tell him never to return… When he would never see her again.
Maybe then, when he was gone, there’d be a room for laughter in this house again.
"Surely your father jests. Is this some sick joke he means to play on me? Has he still not lived down what happened all those years ago?"
The swordmaster had been furious as soon as his eyes had read the lines written on the parchment that a somewhat consternated Edea had brought to him. The same Edea, that had been his student for many years, that was the templar’s own daughter - and that the very same templar now had ordered to marry his old friend and rival, him.
Marrying Edea - How was this supposed to be a good idea?
Not that Edea was not a good child, and truth be told, he had more than once wished she were his daughter. But this was ridiculous. He had once been in love with her mother, he… he couldn’t just… that was just… what was that man even thinking?
…yes, what was he thinking indeed..? Come to think of it, Edea was such a sweet and strongwilled young woman, being with her certainly would not be that dire a punishment, so.. - No. No no no. He shouldnn’t even remotely be thinking about this. No, instead he should… He should…!
"Edea, child, forgive me… But it seems your father and I will have to refresh our old rivalry as I beat some sense back into his head."
And with these words, the older man left his arranged bride behind to have a… word… with her father.
And it was likely not a coincidence that the swordmaster rolled up his sleeves as he walked away…
“ + [I was steering away from the nonsensical same-sex marriage but let's marry my rival -laughs-] ” — silver-shield-heinkel
It took quite an amount of unbelievingly staring at the parchment in his hands until the swordmaster finally believed the words written there. Indeed this was the handwriting of his old friend Braev, but the words… they made no sense. None at all.
He was to marry Argent Heinkel, the commander of the Knights of the Eternian Sky.
Clearly, a man in that position would have been a good match for many a young woman that hoped to gain status in Eternia. And Argent wasn’t too old for marriage just yet, at least in Kamiizumi’s eyes who was older and still hoped for marriage himself. But certainly it could only be a mistake on the templar’s part, this arrangement.
"And you are certain that this is what he ordered, Argent? There is no room for a misunderstandment?" - "Aye… I saw him write and sign it with my own eyes."
A pained sigh escapes the swordmaster’s lips. He didn’t know what might have gone through the mind of his old friend and rival, but with an order like this, he had no choice but to wonder if he was still in full possession of his reason.
He would need to talk with him about this. And if worst came to worst… He had to be ready to relieve the templar from his post as Grand Marshall.
“ + ” — tizzyhadalittlelamb-deactivated
The swordmaster had been quite curious as to what his old friend Braev had wanted to discuss with him. After all, he specifically called him to the council chamber in person, to speak to him in private. It had to be something important then.
But much to Kamiizumi’s surprise it had not been something of importance, but rather something downright ridiculous. According to the templar’s orders, he was to marry the warrior of light hailing from Norrende, Tiz Arrior.
He couldn’t help but burst into laughter.
"Oh Braev my friend… I appreciate that you are trying to look out for me, but truly, you of all people should know best that I do not favour boys. Forgive me, but even if this should be a direct order, I have to refuse it."
No, Kamiizumi would not marry a man. Nor a boy. And even if the templar would insist on it, he would not do it. But…
"…if you were looking to give the boy a home, and someone that watches over him… I suppose I could adopt him. He would not need to be alone that way, if this is what worried you."
“ ♚ ” — arcanistgirlvictoria
It must had been a long and tiring day for the girl. At least that was the only explanation the swordmaster could come up with for the current situation. The arcanist didn’t count to his close friends and from what he had heard, it was at times even questionable whether or not she was an ally in the first place.
And now she was here, sleeping on his lap.
He had entered the chamber of the Council of Six in order to talk to Braev but found the room deserted - and thus decided to sit down and wait. It wasn’t long before he had gotten company - albeit not from the man he was waiting for.
It had been Victoria F. Stein that entered the room, floating as always. At first she had seemed angry, mouthing something that sounded very much like “Damned Victor” before she had then seen him sitting at the table. A small conversation had followed, mostly about the state of the mission in Eisenberg, nothing truly noteworthy.
And then, all of a sudden, the usually quite sadistic and cruel girl had exclaimed that she was tired and - much to his surprise - decided that the swordmaster’s lap was likely the most comfortable place due to his choice of clothing. And before he had been able to respond to this, she had already placed herself as she pleased and closed her eyes.
That had been at least an hour ago. Still he was sitting there, with the arcanist resting on his lap, sleeping peacefully. So peaceful, it was hard for anyone to believe that this truly was the feared demon child of Eternia that held the power to devastate its foes with crippling magic. She seemed like an ordinary girl now, a child still full of dreams and hopes… - What might her hopes have been? Perhaps he ought to ask her another time.
As for himself, he knew which hope to hold right now: Namely that Victoria would wake before Braev arrived. He was certain the templar would not hesitate to make fun of him if he saw this scene…
((This is the cutest thing ever and I wish I could draw because then I totally would draw this.))
Ugh, she was so tired! Stupid Victor and his new medicine. ‘It might make you feel a bit tired’, he had said - and that when she had had a day so far which had been rather nice and without any health problems.
And of course Victor had been right. She had wanted to get her work done quickly then, but Braev hadn’t been in the Council Chamber. At least she hadn’t been alone with that problem, though - Kamiizumi was a bore, but even talking about missions was better than just sitting around.
The side effects of the medicine had kicked in quite suddenly and not just ‘a bit’ and Victoria had quickly looked for the most comfortable place to land before she would fall out of the air. Unfortunately, the chairs in the Council Chamber were as uncomfortable as possible (who had designed this room anyway, really?) and so, the Swordmaster’s lap had clearly been the best choice. Not caring about the man’s opinion, Victoria had simply gone to sleep.
When Kamiizumi shifted slightly, she awoke at least a bit. She had no idea how much time had passed and also was so horribly drowsy that there was no way she would get up. Blinking tiredly, Victoria looked up at him. “I’m gonna sleep for a few more hours. Thank Victor and his damn medicine for that”, she mumbled before closing her eyes again to doze off once more. At least she had been nice enough to give him a warning now.
It had only been a few days since the news had reached them, not even a week yet. These horrible news that had changed three young lives forever, as well as many others. His as well, for this was a loss that pained him deeply.
These few days ago, the message of the much beloved Venus couple’s demise. And with it… their bodies.
Nobotsuna Kamiizumi had lost two good friends that day, two comrades in battle that would be sorely missed. But his loss was only a small one in comparision.
For the girl that right now rested with her head on his lap had lost far more.
That fateful day, she had not only lost her parents, but also her right to have a sheltered childhood.
How often had she been told in these days that she had to be strong now, that she had to be strong for her sisters, that she had to be strong and endure the pain? He did not know, but he knew that not once had she been told in these days that it was okay to be sad. That she did not need to be strong at all times.
It truly was a cruel world they lived in.
Soft and gently he pet the head of his student, silently wishing he could do more for her than just this.
He had been surprised when she had come into the training hall earlier, intent on training with him for the sake of getting stronger. He had not expected her to come during these difficult days, had even told her there was no need for her to push herself now but she had insisted. Yet after only a short session, the wooden training blade had slipped from her shaking hands.
He could see how she was fighting the tears that dwelled in her eyes as she tried to take up the weapon again, only to have it slip out of her fingers right away, trying again and again with the tears growing more pressing with every try.
He couldn’t bear seeing her like this, but telling her to stop did not help. So he had done the only thing he could come up with. He had gently drawn the girl into a hug and told her that it was alright to cry. That being sad was only natural, that she was allowed to feel this way, to be weak every now and then. And that he’d be there for her.
Einheria had quite literally collapsed after that. Giving in to her pain and sorrow, she had gone limp in his arms, sobbing and crying as if there was not to be any tomorrow, letting it all out. So heavy had the burden on the poor girl been, she ended up completely exhausted.
He had not wished to let her feel lonely. And so, in order to spend her at least some warmth and comfort, he had placed her head in his lap as she fell asleep.
And he would not leave her side until she felt better.
That was the least he owed to her and her parents.
Well, that certainly was unexpected. He hadn’t even known that the lad was staying at the same inn as he was here in Florem, and even if he had, he certainly would not have expected to meet him like this.
Mere moments ago, he had still been sleeping peacefully after reassuring himself that Einheria was doing well as a member of the Bloodrose Legion, before then an apparently sleep walking Tiz Arrior had entered the wrong room and let himself fall onto the bed - Kamiizumi’s bed.
At first the swordmaster had tried to simply wake the boy and ask him to leave, but the lad was fast asleep and dd not respond at all. And slowly but surely this was getting annoying.
So Nobotsuna Kamiizumi did, what he had to do.
He kicked the young man off himself and the bed.
“ ♚ - Edea (I EXPECT CUTE, MASTER!) ” — Anonymous
The 9 year old had been crying bitter tears when she had come running down to the training hall. Apparently, some of the boys in the town had bullied her, saying that she was not a proper girl and that she shouldn’t do boys stuff like learning to fight and what not. And to put the icing on the cake, they had told her she would never find a husband that way. Foolish words, jealous words most likely even - but they still can hurt a young girl’s heart.
So young Edea had done what any good girl and student of his would do: She had given the boys a sound beating and then come running to her master.
With great detail had she spoken about the whole incident, taking utmost care to repeat every mean thing that the boys had said - and quite possibly blowing them a bit out of proportion. All the while she had been gesturing wildly with her arms and he had listened to her attentively. Until she was done with her story, and just stood there sobbing and crying.
It was then that he had taken her in his arms and carried her over to the chair, where he sat down and allowed her to sit in his lap. Gently had he held the child and pet her back, telling her that the boys were wrong. About everything. That they were just jealous because they knew they’d never be as good as her with the sword. That she’d one day surely find someone that she’d want to marry and be happy with that person. And of course that she’d grow into a strong and beautiful woman.
And while being held by him and listening to his words, young Edea’s eyes had gotten ever the heavier and heavier until finally, they had fallen shut.
It was delightfully peaceful how the child slept there on his lap, held safely in his arms. It truly gave him a warm feeling. Would this have been how it feels to have a daughter and to care for her? He could only muse about it, he could not know. But for the moment, he would enjoy this. Enjoying feeling the young and still feeble life in his arms that has already begun to take shape and forge it’s future.
After a while, the swordmaster allowed himself to gently kiss the childs forehead, whispering a soft “I love you, my child…”
And maybe, just maybe, he didn’t just imagine it when he saw the girl smile happily after that.
”Daddy!” Little Konoe cheered as she exited the fort. The little girl began running towards her father’s leg with her arms wide open, but halfway there a look of shock crossed her face and she turned around. Konoe dived back into her fort before she began shuffling around inside. Her head peeked out again with her hands clapped over her small mouth while she shook it back and forth. “Practicing hiding, I wanna keep my spot as the hide and seek champion,” She said while putting her index finger to her lips. “Daddy will keep it a secret?”
Alternis looked up, startled. He had not expected the older man to speak, and wasn’t even quite sure that he did. There was a heavy silence before Alternis cleared his throat, awkwardly.
“ As the sword master practiced his trade, the little white sheep known throughout the higher-end of Eternia as Yippy found herself pacing along behind him. She didn't think that he'd seen her, and so because of her growing experience with how to deal with people Tiz's favorite sheep hopped up onto her hind legs (classically) and landed her front half against the back of Nobotsuna Kamiizumi's leg to bleat for his attention. -oldyipper ” — Anonymous
The swordmaster had indeed not seen the sheep, or rather, he had not paid it any attention. Why should he have? Sheep were not monsters that thirsted for his blood, they were peaceful creatures. All he had to do was pay attention that it did not run in front of him where it could fall victim to his experienced blade as he let it glide through the air in swift motions.
But perhaps it would have been wise to pay the sheep more attention, for it now interrupted his training, begging for more attention. Kamiizumi had to perform a lunge forward to keep his balance due to the weight that pushed against his leg.
"Woah, careful now, little one. We wouldn’t want an accident to happen, yes?"
“ Konoe had noticed her Captain up and wandering about in the middle of the night, which was odd since usually only she was up this late. Sometimes other members would return from partying, but very rarely. She knew something was on her Captain's mind for him to be up and about, and well killing their poor training dummy, guess she'd sew that back up later. With that Konoe made some tea and left the pot and a cup out for her Captain to find. ” — stealthmasterkonoe
It took well over an hour of rigorous exercise with the blade for the swordmaster to finally calm down enough to put his weapon aside. This nightmare he had had… He still saw the scene clear before his eyes. He wondered if that would stay like this for many days to come… - Hopefully not. He’d have a hard time bearing it.
As the sweat drenched man made his way back to his room, he noticed a pot of tea standing on the small table, together with a cup. Curious, he goes to examine it - and indeed, there is tea inside! What a wonderful surprise. Certainly, this would help him calm down even more, and allow him some moments of rest. And given the late hour, he knew who had most likely prepared this for him.
Once morning came around, he would be sure to thank Kikyo for a kindness.
Not only was the writing horrible - someone oughta slap the spiritmaster for suggesting this was a good thing for Victoria to do - but also it was… well, not exactly a pleasant choice of topic. So much so, that Kamiizumi did not hesitate to nonchalantly toss it into a fireplace as he passed one.
Just how did Victoria get the idea to write something like this? Had that girl so many repressed urges?
Edea wasn’t buying it. She was older now, and had already learned of Master Kamiizumi’s affections for her mother — yet still, to this day, he would not admit them out loud. At least not to her.
But if he was going to pursue this Rosalyn woman, he would have to get over Mahzer first. He didn’t seem to understand that, and now, much like he had helped her with countless problems, it was her turn to help him.
"I never saw your mother as anything more than a dear friend, Edea," he reiterated sternly.
“Is that so?" She folded her arms, knowing that she was pressing him into a proverbial corner — but she had to. Edea Lee wasn’t the only stubborn person in the room when it came to emotions. “That isn’t what my Father said, Master.”
Tch, why did Braev of all people have to say something towards Edea on this matter? He’d have understood if Argent had let his tongue slip after to many sips of alcohol, but Braev? Why would he choose to share such information with his daughter?
Cursed Templar…
"…Is that so…? What… what did you father speak of then…?"
About how their friendship withered away after they had to fight each other for the hand of the one woman they both loved? About how their clash drew him apart from both of them, prompting him to leave Eternia?
“ The little girl silently hopped down the stairs. Even though she had lived in the house for only a few months she knew which steps made the most noise. Entering the living room, she noticed her daddy asleep on the couch. Konoe walked over to him and climbed up to sit on top of his stomach. He wouldn't wake up right? He couldn't possibly hear her and then laugh at what she had to say? She hadn't spoken to him before, but now she did, "I love you." ” — stealthmasterkonoe
There are days at work, where everything goes wrong. Where a simple task becomes a horrendous ordeal, where failsafes fail and everything feels like it is tumbling down. Such days can easily wear a person out, and leave them exhausted.
Today had been such a day for the man of the house.
So when he had come home after his work, he had taken himself the liberty of letting the housework be housework for a moment, and laid down on the couch. Only for a short while, of course. Or at least that had been the plan. Before he had even noticed, the man had fallen asleep.
He awoke only when suddenly, there was more weight on his body than usual. He didn’t wake quickly, refusing to open his eyes just yet, but he was awake enough to hear a small and gentle voice speak three little but meaningful words. The first words he had heard of that voice.
And even if he did not open his eyes or move in any way, say, to for example hug the child, he could not resist smiling happily at these words.
Yes, taking this little angel in had definitely been one of the best choices he had made in his life. Without a doubt.
Gluttony: a headcanon about food or obsessions
As already evidenced by a thread played not all that long ago, Kamiizumi’s “food obsession” would be his love for good tea. When a man goes so far as to sneak into enemy territory during war just to get some herbs for tea, you can at the very least call him very devoted to his favourite beverage.
Pride: a headcanon about something your character is a bit cocky about
His students, definitely his students. Nobotsuna Kamiizumi takes great pride in his students, first and foremost in his two most promising female students, and will not hesitate to defend their reputation should they be talked badly about. In the worst case he’d use his weapon for that purpose too.
Sloth: a headcanon about something your character hates to do or simply hates in general
Politics. Kamiizumi has never been fond of poliitics, even if he understands the necessity of them. In his eyes, they are not only boring but also a hindrance at times to the way he chose to live his life, as they force his hands to do unhonorable things - like aiding the Swordbearer’s uprising.
“ *comes to his room and knocks gently* Master Kamiizumi...? Are you awake? ” — traitorofeternia
The swordmaster had been sitting next to the fireplace, reading a book in the dim light of this late hour when he heard the knock and the familiar voice. Edea? At this hour? He wondered what might be the matter…
"Feel free to come in, child."
She softly opened the door and stepped in then shu the door behind her. Edea couldn’t help but glance around his room then focus to him. “I’m terribly sorry to bother you this late, but I was looking for someone to talk with. Alternis and mother are asleep and my father is working on some papers…” The blonde looked down some, really hoping she was not intruding with her request.
Kamiizumi was not truly busy, simply reading a bit for his own pleasure and distraction and that was something he could do whenever he pleased. As such, he put the book aside while he gestured towards a free seat around the fireplace.
"Ah, I see, of course child. Come here and sit down, will you? And then tell me what has been keeping you awake."
Going into the room some more, Edea sat in the chair in front of him. “I’m just not able to sleep well… I had a nightmare and its really worrying me…” She glanced down at her lap, gently biting her bottom lip. The dream seemed to make no sense, but at the same time she couldn’t seem to push it away like other dreams. Speaking up again, she looked back up to the other. “I see this scene where Alternis is crying and shaking saying how he’s sorry he couldn’t save me…”
The swordmaster is listening carefully to his student, as well as observing her reactions. It seems this nightmare has haunted her more than once in the past… - poor child.
"…are you worried about what it might mean, my child…?"
After all, such a dream could disturb one’s mind quite easily. Especially if it involved people one was close to…
Edea nodded, her mind frantically searching for a reason for the dream.
"Do you have any idea why I could be dreaming about…?"
It was quite a disturbing dream. Her childhood friend weeping about her death? He didn’t even seem older than he was now, as if the dream could happen any moment. The thought made a chill ruin down her spine, causing her to shiver some.
The swordmaster could not be sure either. After all, dreams were a tricky thing, as they could not only be hints at our fears and desires, but also misleading at times. And he was certainly not an expert at interpreting them… But still, she had come t0 him with this, so it was the least he could do to at least try and help her.
"Dreams… usually show us things that we normally hide deep in our subconscious Edea. I cannot be certain if I am right or not, but perhaps… perhaps this your nightmare was horn from a fear. Maybe the fear of dying and leaving behind those you love?"
He couldn’t help but feel that should this be the case, her seeing Alternis mourning instead of seeing her own end was a sign that she valued her own life less than other’s pain…
He was not sure whether to be proud of this or worried by it.
“ "There was a time…" - eternianblade [[Let's see what this'll lead to~]] ”— burmecianblackmage
"…What?"
"There was a time… when I wasn’t so much unlike you, Alternis."
The swordmaster was seated across the table from the dark knight, with a cup of tea in his hands. Apparently he wanted to strike a conversation with the young man, but hadn’t found any decent topic so far - except for the past it seemed.
Alternis was stunned into silence for a moment, both by the swordmaster’s words and his speaking at all. While the two of them had never particularly avoided speaking to the other, there had also never been occasion to.
"I cannot fathom a time where one such as yourself was ever anything like this." Alternis didn’t clarify what, exactly, this was, but he also felt he didn’t need to, as he stared rather glumly into his own drink.
"…correct me if I am wrong boy… But weren’t you, just like me, bereft of your parents by a plague… and then left to survive on your own, until a benevolent master took you in?"
It was rare for Nobotsuna Kamiizumi to speak of his past, but apparently he felt a need to do so - and he probably thought Alternis was the best person to talk with about this topic…
“ "Master! I heard a rumor that you've ~ found somebody?!" Edea bounced on her heels, positively glowing. "I'm so happy for you! Who is it? Do I know her?" ” — Anonymous
"Wh-wh-what are you talking about Edea, who.. who said anything like that…?" It seems the man is quite flustered about this matter… Has Edea simply caught him on the wrong foot, or is there actually something to this rumour…?
"There IS someone, isn’t there?!" Master never made a face like that before! And he was getting so red!
Giggling, she linked her arms behind her back and grinned.
"You don’t have to tell me who it is~" she assured him, brightly. "I just hope the two of you are happy, that’s all. I’m happy for you, too."
It’s too bad Master hadn’t met whoever he’d met years ago, though. Edea could still remember as a child wondering what it’d be like to marry into the Kamiizumi family by wedding his son or something. Oh well.
"Err, well…I… I don’t even… well… I… I don’t even know yet… whether we are… or not…"
Oh god, he was a grown man, and now he was blushing like that in front of his own student. How shameful…
"But… thank you… Edea…"
Wow! Master was really stumbling over his words, wasn’t he? Edea couldn’t help but laugh, stepping forward and giving him a tight hug.
It was nice to see him like this. She really had to find out who he was dating, though.
"If you aren’t yet, I’m sure you will be," she said confidently, releasing him with a little nod. She gave a little punch in the air of encouragement. "Just don’t give up, okay Master?"
The hug she gives him lets the man regain his composure somewhat and give the girl a smile.
"I won’t… I promise you… Thank you Edea"
Well, looks like he’ll have to tell he more once he’d have figured out what really was the matter… That would certainly be… quite special…
8. A Favorite Story (Cute little Modern AU go~!)
The seven year old walked slowly over to the bed and climbed up on it. In her hands she grasped a small story book, a story about a brave ninja. “Since Daddy is sick I’ll read him a story!” She happily declared sitting next to her adoptive father. She offered him a grin, which showed a missing bottom tooth. Her father returned the smile while he grabbed a tissue to wipe his nose with. The illness was nothing to feel concern over, just a bad case of allergies acting up, but the little girl had insisted to do her best to cheer her dad up.
”This is my favorite story, so it will cheer Daddy up for sure! Okay, once upon a time,” she began slowly. Even if the child knew how to read the book still provided a challenge as she stumbled over a word every so often. The child pushed on, reading the worn out book to the best of her ability until she reached the end.
”The end!” Konoe cheered happily when she closed the book. Glancing over next to her she noticed her father sleeping. Leaning over she kissed his forehead and slid off the bed, deciding to leave him alone to sleep and get better.
Barbarossa is not the type of subordinate that would treat the lives of others as something disposable, and simply by this, he is not causing as much grief as the salve-maker.
Still, his tendency to neglect his mission in order to follow his own agenda and fulfill the late Suleiman’s last wish has at times led to a delay with the supply deliveries. This has caused grief at times, but it is still manageable.
Qada is, simply put, a menace. His lack of respect for human lives is deeply worrying, and the methods he employed are not in the least bit honorable. If Kamiizumi had the permission to do so, he’d have disposed of him long ago.
Qada’s lack of respect towards him also irritates the swordmaster. The salve maker often pretens to heed his orders only to act in contrary to them.
The swordmaster had been busy with paperwork and holed up in the commander’s quarter for quite a few hours now. It was high time he got out and went to get himself a tea. And so, he left his room and headed down the hallway until…
"Oh? My, what are you doing here?"
Seeing the familiar plush bunny sitting on the floor all alone, the swordmaster immediately went to pick it up. The bunny belonged to Kikyo, and it was unusual for her to leave it lying around like that… - Maybe she was close by?
One moment the little girl’s attention found itself fully focused on the TV and the next she had fled to the other end of the couch. Konoe’s adoption into her new family only occurred a few weeks ago, so it was still too soon for her to fully adjust to the house and her new parents. Most of her habits from the orphanage remained, like her dislike for others to touch her, but the child had become less difficult to deal with. Instead of running around and hiding all of the time, on occasion you could find her sitting on the couch watching a show on ancient swords and swordplay with her new dad.
The duo found themselves doing that exact thing, well until Konoe’s dad touched her hair and sent her scooting far away. She shot him a questioning and grumpy glance before settling herself in the couch’s corner to finish watching TV.
The swordmaster had been sitting on the couch, dozing slightly after a long day of work. He had only wanted to sit down for a moment while his lovely companion was getting herself ready to accompany him for a meal at a nice little restaurant, but the soft couch had quickly taken him due to how tired he was.
So when Melinoe came to look for him, she found him sitting there, peacefully dozing. And naturally, she could not resist such an opportunity.
Swiftly, without caring much for her dress at that moment, the woman swung herself onto the swordmaster’s lap and snuggled up to him.
They say that one shouldn’t wake sleeping warriors, as nothing good ever came from that. This one here though would respectfully disagree with that saying.
Waking up to her taking her luxury seat atop of his lap, Kamiizumi couldn’t help but smile once he realised just what had happened.
“Hey dear… I’m sorry, I must have dozed off…”
“That’s okay Nobotsuna. You must have been tired.”
“I’m alright. More importantly… you seem to enjoy this spot, mmh? Well… can’t say I dislike it either…”
And without any further word spoken, the swordmaster gentle placed his arms around the necromancer and gave her a passionate kiss.
It is unknown whether or not the two did indeed leave for dinner afterwards or if they stayed at home.
The anger she felt could not diffuse the tears leaking from her eyes now. No matter what could be said would never fix such a betrayal for her. Certainly, a part of her knew she shouldn’t have opened the door, and yet curiosity is one desire completely insatiable to her.
And lo, what she finds but her lover intertwined with a woman she knew as an adopted daughter of sorts to him. Of all people she could have found him with, this one spurred her furthest into nausea. All she could do to keep herself from vomiting at the door was to speed off long before either could offer an explanation, though she did not care for whatever lies would leak from their maws.
Certainly, she felt as if she had lost herself to time, tears and bile flowing from her collapsed body in the snow. But when she gained her composure, she knew that their bodies would soon leak by her hands as well. What beautiful portraiture she had envisioned to create with their blood. She could hardly wait to get started.
“ "Master Kamiizumi?" Edea approached him after that day's practice session with the other students. She cleared her throat and straightened up, gesturing to the other students who had gathered behind her. Two of the other girls had just snuck in the cake they'd baked this morning, but it was hard to conceal for long. "We know you have no children of your own, but all of us feel that you still deserve to be celebrated today. Because in a way, you're a father to all of us. And we're very grateful." ” — edeaofeternia
The swordmaster cannot hide his surprise at the words of his pupil, before he then realizes the occasion. Ah, yes… it was Father’s Day, wasn’t it…? He hadn’t properly remembered the date as he never had reason to celebrate it, but it seemed like his students were set on changing that.
“…that is very sweet of you, my children. I am indeed blessed to have students like you all”
Perhaps, so he imagined, the way he was treated by them would be how a child of his own would treat him, had he ever had one… - And that thought warmed his heart.
The tiny Lich and the Swordmaster lay still in the heavy snow. Both had endured a long and difficult battle at the hands of an ambush. But this ambush was unlike any other the two had faced before; both had been unknowingly pitted against the other.
Melinoe had been put into a group of assassins, as per her latest contract, yet she had not been properly informed of her target. No, indeed, she had been tricked. But as soon as she knew, she turned on her “teammates” and she and Nobutsuna heartily took them all down, side by side.
Even so, she couldn’t hide what she had been hired to do to him. She knew she had crossed a line she could no longer retreat from. Yet both lay there, silent, for what felt like an eternity. Melinoe was the first to break the silence. “Am I dead? I can’t feel anything.”
The fight had been quite intense indeed, and at the very start of it he had been quite devastated to see just who stood on the other side.
But then the tide’s had quickly turned, and now he lay in the cold snow, having succesfully fended off the attackers. Or well, rather had cut them down to the very last man…
“If… if you are… then I guess so am I…”
It takes him a while to bring forth these words. The battle had truly been exhausting. And now he couldn’t wonder whether he wasn’t as fit as he used to be anymore…
Tears began to flow from her tired and weary eyes as the Swordmaster’s words hit her ears. There was at least one emotion left in her body, one pain left to sear her nerves: regret.
As she pulled her body closer to his, it felt as if she was falling apart, piece by piece. “Nobutsuna… I… I would never have… taken this job… h-had I known…”
She finally made her way to his body, the shattered man she left on the ground. Melinoe pulled herself over him, hands holding his face while she could barely keep her head up. “You know… know I could… never h-hurt you so… don’t you…?”
Burying her heavy head in his chest, she let every drop flow from her eyes, practically soaking his robes. “I could… never live with… with myself… after s-such… a thing…”
He felt tired. Really tired… And heavy.
But he could not just give in to that.
So when she pulls herself closer to him and onto himself, he does not deny her. No, rather he moves his arm to gently hold her while she holds his face and speaks with tears in her eyes.
“I know… I know that, Melinoe… You’d never hurt me…”
Not that she couldn’t do so if she wanted to. No, she was more than just capable of that. But he trusted her, and believed she would never do so willingly.
So when she starts to cry at his shoulder, he doesn’t hesitate to gently place his hand on the back of her head and softly pet her, console her.
“Hey… everything… is alright dear… We’re still both here… together…”
“ "So you and Melly are dating huh? I've heard a lot about you, so I thought I'd come introduce myself. I'm Lucia Xerxes, Geomancer by trade. I hope we get along nicely." she grinned sheepishly. ” — questforthederossobooty
The swordmaster seemed a bit perplexed at first. Someone that came up to him and just out of the blue asked him about the woman he was seeing? Calling her by a nickname even?
That was bound to confuse him.
But only for a short moment, before he pieces together just what was going on.
“Ah… you must be a friend of Melinoe, right? It’s a pleasure to meet you, Lucia. I’m Nobotsuna Kamiizumi - But, ehm… I guess you knew that already, didn’t you?”
The swordmaster seems truly pleased to meet one of Melinoe’s friends - after all, it was rare that she allowed him to know the people she knew. Why, he couldn’t imagine, but he did not question it. Surely she had good reason to do so.
Seeing the man’s confused expression, Lucia couldn’t help but thing maybe she said something wrong. Was it inappropriate to bring up one’s personal relationships. She supposed it was a rather strange thing to say when it was herself she was introducing. Shuffling her feet awkwardly she muttered an apology.
“Sorry. Was that too forward? I’m still unused the customs of this land.”
Thought it would seem this was unnecessary, as Kamiizumi now seemed to have recovered from his puzzlement and was now regarding her normally.
“Well I didn’t precisely know it was you, but I see you with her sometimes, so I sort of put two-and-two together. I’m just glad I was right.” She chattered, shifting into a more comfortable stance. He wasn’t looking at her strangely, that was a good start.
“Ah, I see. Uhm, well… is it… is it truly that… that easy to see that we…?”
The thought now embarassed him a bit. He had done his best not to get too affecionate towards her when they were in public as she once berated him for having done so.
Had it truly been so obvious nontheless that he was seeing her, that he loved her? That thought was making him shy, he could not deny this.
When the Swordmaster attempts to teach young Tiz Arrior the basics of swordsmanship he is faced with more difficulties than he anticipated. [Uncompleted]
By his honour as a master of the way of the blade, this would not do. No. This was entirely unacceptable. Something like this could not be tolerated.
Even if that boy was not formally a student of his, even if that boy was not from the duchy, he would not stand for this.
Seeing this boy wave his sword around this inadequately was bordering on being painful to watch.
Granted, many of his students started out in a similar way, looking much alike to this lad. He knew only two students that had always been on a higher level, thanks to their natural talent. And he could not deny that this boy had made it far with his level of skill. And if he were completely fair, he’d have to admit that his swordsmanship was mediocre at the very least, and showed several good indications.
But the grand marschall had decided to put the fate of the world in the hands of this boy and his comrades, for reasons he himself agreed with. And if he was to bear such a burden, this simply would not do.
"No, no, no… This will not do, Tiz Arrior. Your form is still much too sloppy. I know you have not fought with the blade as much as your comrades have, but this just won’t do."
Overseeing this training had been his own idea, in order to ensure that all four of them would be on a similar level and able to fill any role should the need arise. After all, he wanted them to be prepared so they all would return alive and well.
But now he could not help but wonder if the sheep that lad spoke so fondly off would be more talented at upholding their form while swinging the blade…
Tiz had been training within his own little space apart from the others for long enough. He’d known (and he could tell by the way the swordmaster fought against them) that he was far from the best in swordsmanship, after all he preferred the bow and arrow because of his confusion and difficulty in using such an “honorable” weapon.
It was a sunny afternoon, evening hours on, when he’d been approached by none other than Nobutsuna Kamiizumi. He was Edea’s master, as well as their former enemy.
It sure didn’t feel former, but perhaps it was just the sore nerves struck on many of the duchy.
Tiz had perked up by the shoulders at the sound of Kamiizumi’s disapproving remarks, held his weapon at a still, and then lowered it to turn around. “I-uh… Hello.” Tiz reached his hand out to formally greet the man. Having been in Norende all his life until the chasm, the boy had no idea there were greetings far more formal than shaking hands. Bowing was a good exmple of this.
"Um.. If it doesn’t work, what do you suggest?" A pair of smoldering brown eyes met the swordmaster’s, and instead of being full of confidence they were full of a little shame and a pinch of certainty.
Kamiizumi shot the lad a displeased look at first when he reached out his hand to greet him, but did eventually grab and shake it. And while he still was displeased by the results of the boy’s training, However, when he sees the incertainity in his eyes, he does soften up a bit - after all, no matter how strict a teacher he could be, this man did have a soft spot for those that genuinely tried.
"You need to treat the sword differently than you do now. You seem to regard it as a mere tool, a foreign body that you wished were not there. In order to truly master the art of the sword, you need to view it as a part of your body, an extension of your arm - Here, let me help you."
It is now that the swordmaster grabs the swordarm of the boy and gently pushes it into a fitting position before moving it back and forth in the proper way. Hopefully that’d help him grasp the basiv of the basics.
Tiz sheepishly ducked away from the taller man, thought about sheathing the weapon— but quickly decided to bow. He’d seen Edea do it a number of times, and it was only after he shook his hand that he realized it was the way he preferred to be greeted.
Yeah, he was being awkward wasn’t he?
The shepherd had had his two eyes (both a smoldering brown) casted away from the swordmaster as he was sure that his critique was about to be as brutal as ever. But he’s been wrong before. Tiz blinked in surprise as the black-haired Nobutsuna Kamiizumi took his arm and guided him into the proper hold, provoking the younger of the pair to try as hard as he could to burn into his memory.
There, that already looked much better. Not good enough, but still better. Seems like there was at least a small part of talent to be found in this Boy after all.
"It seems you begin to grasp the basics, good. Now, give it a try on your own and show me the difference this makes."
The swordmaster now let go of the lad’s arm, stepping a few meters back.
