I'm coming back from hiatus to say ask what the shit happened to the betta community?
Particularly on reddit.
Someone asked for help on a new fish and every comment went "2.5 gallons is way too small", mind you the user had a heater AND a filter! Which is awesome to start with.
We (the community i was with 10 yrs ago) never advertised to cycle every single tank unless there was a filter. Even then in-fish cycling was an option.
I have no idea why some people have decreed that the most evil sin is having an uncycled tank under 5 gallons. You really need to chill.
Betta keeping is a HOBBY. You are not being paid to slam people who are trying.
When i first started fishkeeping i had Buddha in a 1.5 gallon bowl with nothing but gravel and a single piece of decor. Had i been met with the amount of animosity i see on reddit i would have NEVER gotten another fish. Hell, i would have returned Buddha thinking that any decision i made at that point was bad and would have given up.
Its sad that the kindness that i met on the forums when i first started fishkeeping has turned into yelling at people because they don't have a 5 gallon tank or because they didnt sand down every item in their tank or they didn't research every bit of science that goes into fish keeping.
Please be kind to people, if we want people to enjoy the hobby we need to be willing to help them where it counts.
