BG gets a new Motor-Operated Disconnect switch

Workers at our Blenheim-Gilboa Pumped Storage Power Project completed the installation of a three-phase Motor-Operated Disconnect switch (MOD) as part of improvements planned for B-G’s 345-KV switchyard under NYPA’s multi-year Transmission Life Extension and Modernization (LEM) program. The MODs are industrial scale on/off switches that help protect equipment and improve the safety and reliability of the state’s transmission system.  Measuring approximately 10 feet high by 15 feet wide, the MOD replaces original equipment dating back to the 1970’s, when the hydroelectric project was constructed. The MOD installation took more than a dozen linemen, electricians and technicians approximately 7 days and was completed on schedule.  The MOD installation was the first major work project of B-G’s 4-year LEM and its success bodes well for the planned replacement and installation of an additional 23 MODs, as well as instrument transformers, surge arresters and capacitors in the B-G switchyard.
