One part of twofs that really hammers home how unreliable of a narrator Thaniel is is when he goes through a two hour wedding ceremony that is objectively extremely important to his life, but he describes it for maybe a paragraph and then cuts immediately to a conversation he had about Mori later that day.

The thing was he was lacking in information which would help him make a decision, and more importantly, he was pretty bloody fed up with needing help. Someone knelt down in front of him and he almost leapt out of his skin. "Hey," Thaniel was saying, still speaking in Japanese, which was easiest, using the voice Keita had once teasingly called his horse tamer voice. He hated how well it worked, felt that he really should have some more dignity than that, but he had very little dignity when it came to Thaniel Steepleton. "Didn't hear you coming," Keita said, trying to steady his breathing without making a meal of it. "That's all right. I wondered where you'd got to," Thaniel said, and it was so good to hear. There was something about all the space in his brain that made him feel like he was hearing Thaniel as if for the first time, despite having lived with him for three years, despite having had him in his memory for decades before that.

Peter Lorre could play Mori from "The Watchmaker of Filigree Street"

Seriously. I am more than halfway convinced that author Natasha Pulley is aware of the great work & nuances of Peter Lorre, for from the moment we were introduced to the character of Mori, I started thinking this could so be a Peter Lorre character, late 1930s/early 1940s era.

And it's not just because of when he'd been conscripted into the Mr. Moto series - which he carried off with considerable aplomb, playing that character as a full person and not a stereotypical nationality, same as with Baron Ito or Chang.

Mori is a small man with an immense presence and a face that can hide or show every thought, a kind, gentle man, restrained, precise, just a little guy who makes clockwork figures and things; a dangerous man, so, so dangerous.

And she describes his voice as amber, and as burnt velvet, and these are 100% Peter Lorre qualities which I use myself in my own original fiction of him.

You don't have to see the famous Peter Lorre face and figure in Mori to still have the essence, the genius, the depth.

But I recommend this book even if you see nothing of the sort! The exquisite control of language, the way the author weaves words into a full sensory experience, was exactly what I needed to read when this book found me while at the library. And the sequel, too.
