Thinking (as one does) about how there could have been a big plotline in TLJ about Righteous Fury and the Dark Side.
I mean, people (rightfully) take issue with Return of the Jedi’s framing of “striking down the Evil Emperor is Bad” (it’s nuanced, mostly because Why Are You Really Doing This?), so it could have been a chance to delve into the complexities.
Complexities that could basically be Rey reliving the moment where that red lightsaber turns on and kills Han, and the hatred she feels as a result. You know. An exploration of trauma and revenge, and whether she wants to learn how to control the Force so that she can Help Other People, or so that she can Kill Kylo Ren. It would especially be notable if she eventually obtained the power to heal through that--thus making Rey’s trademark (?) healing ability the fulfillment of a character arc. Her goal becomes not “murder the man who murdered someone I cared about”, but “fixing up that big hole in the person’s body”. Also tying her back to Finn, who she left behind bloodied and comatose.
It could call back to how she turned away from Kylo Ren’s fallen body and ran back to Finn’s unconscious form, choosing to stay beside him in the planet’s final moments, rather than rush to finish the job. Rey, the Scavenger, who was fixing things from the moment we saw her, who went and found the broken Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, but is also fueled by rage and bitterness because everyone in her life abandoned her, and the two people who didn’t both ended up dead or wounded...so she has a choice:
Should she seek the powers of strength, so she needs no one to get hurt trying to protect her? Or should she seek the powers of healing and protection, so that those she values can be safe? And do these powers define her? Is this the only way that she can keep people around her, because she’s useful to--oh my gosh Kylo Ren’s not wearing a shirt, let’s fumble over that, instead!
