Attack on Turtle- Posting once again at wild hours because @languajix requested I draw Mike from their Hold Every Memory fic series on AO3!!!
It's a wonderfully done alt. branch of Ghost in the Shell and ya'll should be obsessing over both like I am!! I suggested tossing in the Rise Turtle Tots cause we're both suckers for fluff~!! I'm so normal about them it's fine!!!
Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles // Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze
April O'Neil, Casey Jones and other TMNT Couples celebrating Christmas Together
(I wanna put the Three TMNT Ships in some Snow Level from the NES TMNT Arcade Game for this Holiday ok)
Siiick. Mikey's using diamond encrusted nunchaku.
TMNT #2
They defeated that barbarian wizard ghost king with the power of love and some particle accelerators! Why doesn't Ghostbusters 2 get any respect?
Why does Secret of the Ooze get a pass for being a lighter, more toyified sequel when GB2 lays there, forgotten?
Ooo could you recommend a film from the year you were born, please?
Absolutely I can! Let's see, what do we have here...
Now, to be clear, by Tumblr standards, I am old as hell, so normally the year of my birth isn't something I'd brag about in here. But lemme say this here and now: 1991 was a kick-ass year for popular film, at least in the United States. I'd always recommend Beauty and the Beast, as seen in the GIF above, but let's be honest, that's probably seen by most people who'll read this. I mean, if you haven't seen it, I absolutely encourage a watch, or even a rewatch if you haven't seen it recently! It's a classic for a reason, and won't be topped, no matter how many Emma Watsons you throw at it. But OK, let's look here and see what else we have.
On counting, I've seen 22 films from 1991, and there definitely are some highlights in the list. Hot Shots! is a fun-as-hell parody comedy of Top Gun that you'll like if you like Airplane!. The Addams Family is sort of a requirement, in my opinion, and one of my favorite family films then and now (and a film I think is damned close to perfect, especially for an adaptation). And The Silence of the Lambs is an obvious recommendation for every possible reason, and if you haven't seen that yet, you absolutely should. There are also films I'd love to recommend but haven't seen yet, like Fried Green Tomatoes, Naked Lunch, The Fisher King, Boyz n da Hood (I really gotta see that one), Barton Fink (oof, that one, too), and Cape Fear, at the very least. There are also the ones I could recommend if I wanted to be a pretentious asshole, like Prospero's Books or Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, the latter of which is an absolute requirement for theatre and Shakespeare nerds alike. Honestly, there are too many choices. Sooooo...
Favorite Action Film: Terminator II: Judgment Day
I mean...yeah. If you haven't seen Terminator II, then for the love of GOD, watch Terminator II! It's one of the best action films of all time for a reason, and its special effects still hold up remarkably well. Watch the first film if you must but, frankly, you don't really need to! This is just that good a movie in its own right, and should be seen by anybody who loves fun-ass action movies. And Arnold! YES! The best performance he'd had by that point, and arguably his best since. Just trust me here, it's incredible, and you should watch it if you haven't.
Favorite Drama: Thelma and Louise
I've reviewed this movie on my other blog, at least partially, and I gave it an 84%. I liked the film quite a bit, but I also didn't really say I'd recommend it to people outside of saying it was a good movie. And honestly...I've changed my mind a bit. I still won't say this is a seminal film to watch for everybody, but I WILL say that it's worth a recommendation. This is a bit of a familiar story, but executed very well, and with very likeable characters. It's also a very good film to analyze for those who like that sort of thing, and is also one of the best examples I can think of of a "good for her" film in a number of ways. I mean, not entirely good for her, there's murder involved, but it's a movie where you root for the leads...even if you know you shouldn't. And, to be honest, it's got one of the most iconic endings of any film from this year. Definitely worth a watch.
Favorite Crime Film: The Silence of the Lambs
Look, watch The Silence of the Lambs. I'm not even going to say anything about it, outside of the fact that it's one of those movies that ANY person who likes movies should watch. I hesitate in even mentioning it because most likely you've seen it by now, but it's sort of one of the biggest films of the 20th century, FOR A REASON. But, if you'd rather a different crime film to put in here, throw Cape Fear or Point Break in here instead; both also fantastic crime films, but not better than this one in terms of quality, in my opinion.
Favorite Comedy: Hot Shots!
This movie's dumb as hell. And I love it. You love Top Gun? You wanna laugh at nonsense for about an hour and a half? You wanna see Charlie Sheen in his prime? OK, maybe not the last one, but fuck if this isn't a fun movie. I could've put Soapdish in this slot, since it's a VERY forgotten and underrated film, and I also have a soft spot for Father of the Bride and What About Bob?, so consider those three secondary recommendations, but...look, I actually love this movie, and the sequel. It's dumb junk food for my brain, but fuck me if it isn't funny.
Best Movie for Theatre Kids: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead
I mean...yeah. Mentioned it earlier, and said it was a pretentious choice, BUT. If you like Shakespeare, especially Hamlet, watch this film. If you like Gary Oldman and Tim Roth (whom you SHOULD like), watch this film. If you like playwright Tom Stoppard, you know what to do. If you like plays and theatre, follow the instructions. If you like the underated Disney direct-to-DVD midquel The Lion King 1 1/2, yes I'm actually serious, watch this movie. And finally, if you'd like an interesting story about the nature of fate, chance, and death, as well as being the side-character in someone else's story, and not realizing that until the last goddamn minute...watch this one. It's worth it.
And finally, to finish off this list of 5...
Favorite Guilty Pleasure: Hudson Hawk
Let's be clear here: this is a horrible movie. Bruce Willis is not in top form (which is goddamn saying something), the writing is weird, the villains are INSANE, and the plot is more confusing than should be allowed for a movie like this. And yet...fuck me, this film is a HELL of a lot of fun to revisit. I've got Would You Like To Swing On A Star running circles in my head just typing this, and I'm glad for it. My fiancee introduced me to this movie, and I thank her for it, because it's just a fun time. Again, though, it is a bad movie, don't get me wrong. But it's worth the trash.
There are others here to recommend, but if you're in the mood for a good weekend or so, here are the one's I'm choosing. Here's a more detailed list of my top 10, keeping in mind that these are films I've seen. If there's a film you think that should be on here, I probably haven't seen it. And keep in mind, these are a list of my personal favorites from this year, not the films I think are the objective best or best in quality. Feel free to ask me any questions!
