Week 0: Intro
a lovely event hosted by @yourocsbackstory! i’m a li’l bit behind, so i’ll be doing this one tonight & week 1 later this week, but!!
i’m going to be doing the main characters of Pirate’s Bane, the sequel to The Martyr Queen. i can’t promise i’ll be doing every character each week, but i’m going to do who i can when i can!! <3
Alinora Mynerva
“My name is Alinora Mynerva. You can call me Nora.”
“...”
“Must I continue?”
“...”
“Fine. My name is Alinora Mynerva. You can call me Nora. I was once the crown princess of Mynera before that was torn from my hands. Once by outside forces and once by myself. I worked as an assassin for a bit. Nowadays they call me Death’s Champion. It’s more an empty title than anything else, though it wouldn’t be if I could get the hang of these stupid powers…”
Elaena
“My name is Elaena. No last name, because reapers don’t really need them, no?” She shrugs. “I’m death’s eldest daughter and the first reaper. Grand titles, yes, but little more than a circumstance of birth. Or would creation be more accurate?” She shrugs again. “These days I spend less time escorting souls to and from the afterlife, and more time serving as handler of Death’s Champion. It’s… interesting.”
Lyr & Ava Inerra
“My name is Lyr, and this is my twin sister, Ava.”
She waves.
“We’re twins. After the defeaat of Kai’os, we took over the leadership of our people, alongside our cousin Amara and several other trustworthy Slaeyr. It’s boring. Really, really boring, actually. Mostly we make laws and try to figure out how to turn the isle of Sylfae into a place Slaeyr can really thrive. I’d much rather be out doing something, but… this is where we’re needed. I guess.”
Talitha Jade
“Name’s Captain Talitha Jade. You probably haven’t heard of me. I spent the first few years of my career in piracy plundering old Anarian ruins for secrets and treasure. Then used my degree in magical theory and runicology to puzzle out old spells and forgotten pieces of history. Though, to tell the truth, I did that under a pseudonym. Also published a few spells under the name, to tell the truth. They’ve gained a bit of traction through the magical community. I don’t want to brag, but I’m something of a big deal there.
“Or, well, my alias is.” She pauses. “What’s my alias? Well. Normally I wouldn’t say. There’s a reason I’m publishing under a false name, after all, but for you I’ll make an exception.” She winks. “Call me Bridget Alum.
“I suppose you’re also wondering what a magical theorist is doing as a pirate? As a pirate captain, to boot. Well first, I’d like to remind you that it isn’t nice to stereotype people. Not every pirate you meet is an uneducated ruffian, though I will grant you that they’re certainly out to plunder your gold. A lot of pirates fall on hard times, or abandon the navy or merchant’s guild due to unfair policies. Real sad stuff, to tell the truth. Me, though, I was never in the navy. Wasn’t even a navy brat! Or a merchant brat!
“Nah, my story is a little more mundane. I studied at the Magus College for a time, before that fell through on me. Why? Do you know how bad of a grant problem the College has? It’s pretty bad. No way I’m fighting a bunch of scholars for the extra grants so I can study ancient history. Piracy, on the other hand, is pretty damn lucrative. Especially when instead of pissing off various naval organizations, you plunder ancient ruins for long-lost magical secrets instead. And make money off of the enchanted items in there. Or money off of replicating them.
“Anyway. It means I have a ton of research and my crew is well-paid, so everyone’s happy!
“We did take a bit of a break to help Mynera out with their Slaeyr problem, though. Once that was done… well. We took off. But instead of resuming our plundering, we ended up dragged off onto another adventure.” Talitha rolled her eyes. “Now, though… now we’ve settled onto the pirate’s cove. Used to be I wasn’t allowed to step foot here, but the pirate king and I…. we worked things out.” She smiles, and it’s a dangerous thing.
Aishlynn Mynerva
“My name is Aishlynn Mynerva. To tell the truth, there isn’t much to be said about me. I was once a Myneran princess, before I was claimed as a Slaeyr. I helped lead a resistance against a very dangerous man, and I also helped my sister stop that man. Up until about six months ago, I was working with a pirate--one Talitha Jade--to stop that man’s daughter from continuing what he started… or worse. Until I… saw the light, you could say.” She smiles, just a hint. “Now I am Kaltain Inerra’s most trusted advisor. And I like it that way.”
Viviana Westerguard
“My name is Viviana Westerguard. I… think. That’s what they tell me, anyway. I’m not… there’s not much I remember. Except… I remember… a terrible, blinding light. Darkness. And a horrible scream.” She shudders and stays silent a moment; looking haunted. “And something that I need to do.”
Asa Veranus
“Name’s Asa Veranus. I’m a healer, which means I don’t have time for much of anything at all except for healing. Or… normally I wouldn’t. But the lov— I mean, one of my closest friends, Aishlynn Mynerva, has gone missing. I haven’t heard from her in weeks, and I need to find her. I’m worried that something terrible has happened. Call it a gut feeling. Something you learn to listen to, when you work as a healer. It’s led me to more than one important case. And how I met Aishlynn in the first place.”
