It’s dark. So dark you can’t see your hand in front of you. The floor is cold and damp and you shiver as you run your hands along the wall. It’s all stone. There’s a weight on your ankle as you adjust your position. It aches and you reach down to touch it. It stings with your touch and your hand is wet and sticky.
You try to remember the sun again. The warmth, the brightness, the life it gave you. You wonder if it was in the sky right now. You lost track of counting at 552 hours after you heard something skittering in the corner of the room. The pet door carved into the heavy steel door, your only source for food and water, hasn’t been opened in what you guess to be weeks. You wet your chapped lips which only dries them out further. Your stomach lurches in on itself as it tells your body to consume what muscle mass you have left. You curl into a ball to ride through the pain. You’ve heard nothing for weeks. No movement, no sounds of distant music, not even a chuckle or a sneeze.
“I’m going to die soon.” You say to yourself. “No one is looking, no one is coming, and I’m going to die.”
You close your eyes as another hunger pang rips through you. You want to cry but there’s no moisture left in your body. So you lay there, eyes screwed shut as you welcome the cloud of unconsciousness.

Rumbling shakes your body slightly. Is it from the shivering?
No this is...different. The whole world feels like it’s rumbling. The walls feel unstable. You pull yourself from the depths of unconsciousness.
There’s a huge boom and the noise, though farther than you expect, echoes around the room in the consistent absence of sound. “Is...the world ending? Have I been here so long that I get to witness the end?” you think again.
Lucky you. You get to watch the walls that trapped you crumble before you’re swallowed by the Earth and cast into hell. Should you have made the deal with him? Probably. It would’ve meant you at least got to see the sun again, if only for a few minutes during the day. But the voice in your head and the feeling in your stomach persuaded you not to. Even now as your stomach gnaws at your tendons and muscles, the feeling still resides. It’s strong, stubborn, staying put. You wonder if your stomach can feast on that instead. There sure seems like an abundance of it. You shudder as the booming gets closer, the rumbling gets more violent, and you ponder if you will ever know the name of this feeling.
