one time I told my therapist "I tend to have issues with people who think of themselves as authority figures" and she burst out laughing and then said "I think we need to pause and reflect on how you phrased that"

#had to go to the comments to figure out what the therapist thought was off about the phrasing #i don't see an issue with this statement?#nobody is an authority figure innately it's just a role society has decided to attribute to some people #it's completely arbitrary #for example i'm a teacher and i don't see myself as an authority figure #i'm a person who has some knowledge and experience and is passing it on to others #others who may have knowledge and experience they could pass on to me!#even kids know things that i don't #and when i say something to them about their attitude and behaviour it's not from a place of authority #it's from a place of responsibility #i am responsible for not only their education but their safety and the group's safety and wellbeing #so i see myself as an educator and a mediator but definitely not as an authority figure #and i think bosses and parents should see their job the same way #they're responsible for other people so they sometimes have to make tough decisions #but those decisions should 1. be explained and 2. be discussed and try to satisfy everyone #my boss is a coordinator of information and a figure of responsibility for a well working environment #he's not actually a boss or an authority in my eyes #anyway #i completely agree with op's phrasing #so much so that i didn't understand what was wrong with it
