You know, I see a bunch of posts about Aziraphale ‘choosing to be a man’ bc he presents as ‘male’, and I might be sticking my foot in it here, but I personally enjoy the HC that he didn’t actually choose to present as ‘male’.
Aziraphale is, among other things, a creature of habit. This is a celestial being who can probably take any shape he wants just as easily as Crowley does, and he’s literally had the same haircut since the dawn of time. His heavenly body looks almost identical to his human body. He put in the bare minimum effort to change anything about himself when he got sent to earth because he absolutely hates change 99% of the time. This is why he’s always out of date with things like music and vernacular. This is why he’s been wearing the same freaking coat for over 100 years. This is why it takes him so much longer to reconcile the fact that Heaven is filled with just as many jerks as Hell.
I would not be the LEAST bit surprised to hear that he gave absolutely zero thought to how he would be perceived by humans when he showed up on earth. He doesn’t care what gender they think he is as long as he passes as human. And he does. And everyone assumes he’s a man. And he just goes, “Ah. Yes. That’s me. A ‘man’.” And just rolls with it for 6000 years because that’s apparently the gender random strangers are going to assign to him if he keeps the shape he’s got, and he can’t be bothered to change the shape he’s got because.... Well. Why would he?
IDK, everyone is allowed their own thoughts on the matter, naturally. I just enjoy the idea that the only reason he dresses/presents like a man instead of being more fluid with things (like Crowley) is because that’s what some random tailor back in Mesopotamia thought he was a few thousand years back and he’s not about to change even the smallest habit he’s got if he doesn’t absolutely have to. (He doesn’t actually think of himself as a man of course, it’s just his ‘clever disguise’ ^_^;)
(And yes, I used he/him pronouns to write this bc that’s the ones the writers used for them in the book.)
