Here’s an informal post directed at people who don’t think Rebecca is going to get into musical theater (as opposed to my more thought out post on Rebecca’s sexuality lol):
The show literally begins with Rebecca gushing about performing on stage, even though it was just the most small of summer camp performances of South Pacific and she was literally just a backup singer.
And let’s keep in mind the lengths she went just to go to this summer camp (which Rachel and Aline have revealed was in Northern California.) Along with the other things we know about her as a kid, it’s clear that this wasn’t some passing interest.
Ironically, Josh just happened to be at Camp Canyon Grove. Josh breaks up with her and as we find out later, Rebecca decides the following summers to do the mock trials that her mom wanted her to do instead, diverting her from the thing that made her happy.
And then we have, “Josh Has No Idea Where I Am!” in which Dream Ghost Akopian (aka, literally Rebecca’s subconscious) basically tells her that in college, instead of obsessing over guys she should focused on the thing she loved. That Moby Dick musical was terrible. And Rebecca loved it. She didn’t care that it was terrible. She didn’t care that she had a small role. It made her happy.
In the first episode, Rebecca bumps into Josh in New York, having already seen the message from the butter commercials, asking her when the last time she was truly happy was. While talking to Josh, she begins to hear bits of “I’m in Love With a Wonderful Guy”. But why would she hear that of all things in reference to Josh? Because being with Josh wasn’t the last time she was truly happy. It was performing in that musical. Rebecca misread the signs her subconscious was giving her.
There’s obviously lots of other things in the series, like that we know Rebecca is still interested in musicals (she has a subscription to Playbill Magazine for instance.) There’s other little connections, like Sunil being a former musical theater major (and Paula’s insistence that he and Rebecca would make good friends.) Nathaniel theater major dorm mate is the one who got him into Harry Potter.
And of course, LOL, there’s the big one: THE SHOW IS ABOUT A WOMAN WHO IMAGINES HER LIFE IS A SERIES OF MUSICAL NUMBERS. And it’s not just a narrative conceit. It’s actively a part of the plot and Rebecca’s characterization.
The common dismissal I see of the idea that Rebecca will get into musical theater is that she can’t sing. Which is just... completely absurd. Singing lessons exist. Sure, Rebecca is never going to sound like Mariah Carey but that doesn’t mean she can’t greatly improve with singing lessons.
And like honestly if you are concerned with like... whether she can sing great and therefore be a successful musical theater performer you are. missing. the. point. Rebecca never cared about being the star. She just wanted to participate in something she loved.
