I'm not sure that I feel the need to write this out anymore, but I was ruminating on it during my drive home so maybe I will anyway.
I just got back from a lovely evening out with a friend, my oldest friend, she's probably more like a cousin than a friend, really. We were catching up on our lives and also on mutual friends, as we often do when we see each other. And as it often does, it left me feeling insecure and unsettled about my life. Not because of her, but because I inevitably end up comparing my own life to all the very impressive people we went to college with. They're lives are not perfect, they all have struggles of their own, but they are also doing things and have built lives and careers (and families for many of them) for themselves, and are busy being doctors, school principals, university professors, activists, starting their own non profits, etc, while I feel like I've just been drifting for the past decade or so. It feels like they've all become grown ups, while I'm still stuck in the same place I was right after college, trying to figure out what to do with my life. Not only have I not been building a career, I haven't even been employed for the majority of my adult life, and while sometimes I feel like I've come to terms with that fact, nights like tonight when I bump up against the contrast unsettle me all over again.
Anyways, there are a lot of reasons why my life has turned out this way, most of them connected to my ADHD, but one of the consequences is that I don't stay in touch with all these amazing people that I want to be friends with, because I feel embarrassed about my own life, and don't know how to talk about myself. And the longer it's been since I've been in contact, the harder it is to reach out. This is not a new problem or something I've just realized, but I've been hiding from it for months, and it is only as I start to try and talk to people again that it re-enters my awareness.
I don't really know what the solution is. I'm hoping that getting back into classes, and (the gods of ADHD being kind to me) managing to finally finish the semester out, I will feel more confident about my own life, and more able to reach out to people. But I think I also just have to get over my fears about being vulnerable in front of people, and be willing to let them see me struggling. Because that is how to get close to people, after all. And I still haven't figured out why that is something that is so hard for me to do, but it really is.
Tumblr has been really good for me, because I can talk to people and make friends without having to actually talk about myself. I can just have thoughts and opinions and reactions, and it doesn't matter if I have a career or even a job, let alone what they are.
Writing it all out does help bring me back to myself. I don't know if I will keep this up, but I do feel like I want to share my thoughts semi-anonymously, so here they are, unedited.
