Honestly my heart feels heavy after watching that final episode of Staged… Idk it feels difficult to know what’s real and what’s “staged” and considering how meta the show is… I really hope Michael and David don’t actually feel like people might get sick of them or that they might need a break from each other…They were probably just joking? :( Right? I need some reassurance Amy :((
Oh, Anon. I feel you very much on the final episode of Staged 3. It packed an emotional wallop, for sure. (What is it with the last episodes of these seasons being so gut-punchy? Episode 8 of the second season also had a thoroughly emotional ending, with the reuniting in person and David’s hand on the car window.)
In the case of this season, though, I think there was a massive amount of meta going on, and that was to the detriment of the show. For me personally, I have no idea exactly what Simon’s intentions were, so I can only share my interpretation of the episode’s events and the underlying meanings therein.
What I can say, though (and hopefully it will be reassuring) is that I do not at all think Michael and David feel they need a break from each other, or that this is the end of them working together. I plan to go into this in much greater detail in my review/analysis of Staged 3, so I don’t want to take up too much space here going into it (also because I’m very tired from cooking all day, so about ready to head to bed). But I hope you’ll stick around for that and the (undoubtedly) endless discussions we’ll be having about it in the days and weeks ahead.
In the meantime, let me leave you with a gif from the last episode of season 3, which I think best sums up what I am feeling, re: Michael/David...
I know this could just be me being an undying optimist, but I tend to want to believe that things will work out in the end. And that the ending of one thing quite often tends to be the wonderful beginning of something else.
Truly hoping this helps to put your mind at ease, Anon. Thanks for writing in! x
