Expanding on the design for Nokama I drew for this goofy picture so better realise my own way of drawing the Toa Metru with my two favourites. Heights and eye colour based on the sets, and the cartoony smoothness I seem to be giving all my Bionicle art. I'll maybe do the other four in future.

Filling some gaps

Ahkmou was brought back to Po-Koro during the events of 2002.

With the Bohrok rampaging across the island, devastating the landscape and converting all Matoran they encountered to their side, Onewa sent Pohatu out to find Ahkmou, and brought him home. Onewa explained the truth about Metru Nui to him, revealing that he hadn’t been left behind on purpose, that finding one Matoran Sphere missing from the Lhikan when they arrived on the island was the most gut-churning moment of their time as Toa, that each Turaga did a headcount of their villagers to try and discern who was missing and how much it stung Onewa that it was one of his, the brash, confident, cocky one of the bunch, that was left in the silver sea.

Ahkmou is taken to Ga-Koro with the rest and stays as far away from Macku as he can possibly get for the duration of his time there.

Ahkmou and Onewa see each other fairly often, after that. The Turaga make a point of keeping abreast of what they tell the Toa Nuva about, which details and fragments of the Matoran’s real history are known, and Ahkmou is told the same, forbidden from mentioning the truth to the other Po-Matoran, or anyone. He’s never brought along to the meetings like Matoro is, he never meets the only other Matoran that has the same knowledge as him.

He resents the Turaga for hiding the truth from them all. Several times he snaps that they’re no better than Makuta when it comes to lying. But Onewa always looks him in the eye and asks him what he thinks the Matoran would do with that information, whether they’d continue to live their lives, or if they’d try to return to Metru Nui and walk straight into Mangaia en route. They both know that some definitely would, and Onewa isn’t willing to accept that.

Other times, they get on fine. Onewa likes that he doesn’t have to walk all the way to Ga-Koro and invent and excuse for the visit every time he wants to talk about his home. They chat about how some things on the island are different, but a lot of it is the same, especially the personalities of some of the more colourful characters (”Yes, Hafu was always like that”).

Then, at some point in 2003, when Po-Koro is returning to normal but before the discovery of the Avohkii, Ahkmou visits Onewa, and asks about himself. Who was he before all of this, before Makuta stole him away and turned him against his brothers.

Onewa takes some time to consider the answer, but tells it truthfully. He and Ahkmou were once rivals, both great carvers, the best in the city... but Dume favoured Onewa more. So Ahkmou sought out the Great Disk in an effort to earn recognition in a different way... only to become a target of the Dark Hunters, coerced into selling out his friends.

Onewa does his best to highlight that the circumstances surrounding his betrayal were far from normal, but Ahkmou doesn’t hear that.

All he hears is that he was always a traitor.

It doesn’t shock him when Vakama tells the tale of the Toa Metru. He’s heard his part in the legends before. The dirty looks he gets from the other Matoran, especially Ehrye and Tehutti, don’t faze him. He’s seen them all before, from his fellow Po-Matoran, and in every mirror he’s come across.

And when the newly-ascendant Teridax comes to him, and offers him the chance to become powerful at the cost of betraying everyone again... he accepts. Why not, after all? 

He was always like this. 

Or at least, that’s how he sees himself.

‘Turaga’ Ahkmou is less a triumphant villain and more a bundle of self-loathing and issues in the approximate shape of a Matoran.

Bionicle month - Day 9: Villain

Toa Vakama and Toa Onewa have fought their way into the depths of the earth, only to find the massive heart of the Morbuzakh rooted beneath their island home. As soon as I chose 2004, I knew I wanted to do the Morbuzakh for this prompt. I originally wanted to try and make some kind of MOC for it (given that I’ve pretty much never seen it done), but this last weekend ended up kicking my ass and I super didn’t have the time to even try and develop it. So, we have this instead, which I’m still really happy with.

Would still like to try a Morbuzakh MOC at some point, though certainly not of the King Root for. Obvious reasons.

Been bad at posting these here recently, so apologies for the present flood of posts. Should try and be consistent from here on out, hopefully.
