Part 1 of Volume 3 of the Real Monsters is finally out!
I thank you for all your patience in waiting for new designs and I also appreciate all the suggestions for new monsters. ADHD was a tricky design to get right but I think I did it justice, in the education and stigma reducing aspects. I will work on the last half of this volume throughout the year.
Thank you so much for the support along the way! Prints | Clothing | Digital Files
Credit to Katie Mulally for being a wonderful editor and Chloe Joya [FabooGu] for her expert advice on ADHD.
Another art style challenge finished, this time featuring harley in the style of artists.
I’m also looking at Frida Kahlo who expressed her pain in her paintings. More modern artists I’m looking at are Shawn Coss and Toby Allen. They have both literally personified mental illness. Making them monsters makes them easier to fight off.
U.K. Based artist, Toby Allen, is a freelance illustrator that specialises in children’s books, games design and character design. In his ongoing personal project ‘Real Monsters’, Allen explores ways of reducing the stigma behind mental illness by externalising and manifesting different mental illnesses as monsters. “The project originated from imagining my own anxieties as monsters and finding it to be a cathartic and healing process to draw them,” - Allen In drawing them in simplistic and vibrantly coloured profiles, the manifested emotions become tangible in form and easier for patients to deal with, similarly to the process of externalising the internal.
I’m halfway through the artwork for Volume 3 of the Real Monsters! Hopefully the latter half will come quickly and I can finally start thinking about putting together a book (and re-open postcard sales.)
Watch this space! (For those who keep asking, yes ADD/HD will be featured in vol3, but it’s not shown here)
YO depressed brain what the fuck
I’m not sure if it helps
Artist Toby Allen visualizes what illnesses like anxiety, depression and paranoia would look like if they were monsters. He creates a chilling picture of the illnesses that no one can see, but that many confront in their daily life.
Borderline Personality Disorder, Complex-PTSD, PTSD, anxiety, panic, severe depression.
