Parenting Perils...

Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (18th - 22nd January 2021)

Oh, Toby. He had one job but, alas, it appears that behaving like a rational human being for a short interview is a task beyond him. This week saw Toby sent into a panic as he was informed that he would need to undergo a psychological assessment if he was to act as a donor for Walter. Cleo’s attempts to reassure Toby made no difference and he fled, whilst Martine told Cleo that her son’s lack of relationship experience may be responsible for his erratic moods and strange behaviour. When Toby found out about his Mother’s interference, he was furious and his outburst frightened Cleo, who told him they were over. Having witnessed this, Felix told Celeste that he could no longer keep quiet about Toby’s anger issues and that he was going to the police, but Celeste insisted that they wait until the transplant had gone ahead. 

The following day, Covid-19 appeared to have done a disappearing act as Toby prepared for a face to face meeting with the counsellor at home. Unfortunately, the session went disastrously wrong when the counsellor found a copy of ‘The Red Door’ behind a cushion and Toby accused her of trying to catch him out, not realising that Felix had been reading it. A furious Toby threw the counsellor out and word soon reached Martine that Toby had refused the session. With Walter having deteriorated further, Martine was understandably angry that her Father’s last hope of a transplant had been thwarted, and she confronted Toby, who reacted by locking her in the garage. Luckily, Celeste arrived on the scene just as Toby was planning to torch the place and let her out. When Felix found out about what had happened, he insisted that it was the final straw, and that the police would have to be contacted. In a surprising move, Celeste insisted on making the call herself but instead, made a call to Dr Ley, asking her to come and ‘fix’ Toby...

Meanwhile, tensions were high in the Hutchinson household this week as the family prepared for Edward’s will reading, and there was a shock in store when everything was left to Diane. However, Diane was soon given more to worry about when she discovered that she was pregnant, and confided in Verity that she had no idea who the Father was. As Diane struggled to come to terms with her new found predicament, the family prepared to scatter Edward’s ashes and Verity soon decided that the best place for her late Father was down the drain. She’ll get no arguments from me. Whilst Tony was pleased that his Father was now out of his life, Verity warned Diane that she couldn’t keep quiet about the pregnancy forever and Diane decided to book a scan to find out how far along she was, asking Verity to keep quiet in the meantime. However, whilst doing a spot of bin raking, Tony discovered the pregnancy test, and immediately assumed that it was Verity’s. The following day, Tony spotted Sami and Verity celebrating and congratulated them on the pregnancy, not realising that they were actually celebrating a new contract for the law firm. Verity reluctantly agreed not to drop Diane in it, but now finds herself having to lie to Sami, who ended the week struggling to come to terms with the belief that he’s about to become a Father...

Elsewhere, Maxine bumped into her new landlord, Brad, this week, and his comments made her worry that she was about to lose her home. However, the following day, Brad reassured Maxine that he had no intention of kicking her out and there was clearly an attraction between the pair as they shared a kiss. Unfortunately for Maxine, any hopes of a relationship with the newcomer were quickly dashed when she discovered that Brad was actually in a relationship with her Mother, Trish, (although when has a little thing like that ever stopped a Hollyoaks resident?) who returned to the village this week. Despite Trish having been absent from Maxine and Minnie’s lives for the last few years, she set about trying to make amends as she informed her daughter that she and Brad were moving to the village. Although initially not happy at having her Mother on her doorstep, Theresa encouraged Maxine to give her a chance, and Maxine spent a nice afternoon with Trish and Brad at The Dog. However, when Brad went to the bar, he was seen looking at his phone and adding photos of Maxine to his collection of photos of women....

In other news this week, Summer confronted Warren over the secret he and Sienna were keeping, and demanded to know if he’d attacked her Father. However, Warren lied that he and Sienna had been discussing their affair. Brody and Sienna made up after his kiss with Summer, and Sienna was delighted when Brody proposed, whilst James reluctantly agreed that Ste could clean the flat on a more permanent basis. 

Finally, having seen how much Darren was struggling with Charlie’s imprisonment, Luke warned Mandy that he wasn’t sure that he could keep quiet about Ella killing Jordan. However, Mandy begged him to keep shtum, bringing up the fact that Luke’s alcoholism had contributed to Ella’s stint in foster care and he couldn’t let her down again. 

5 Things We Learned This Week:

1. Maxine most definitely did not have “full rumpy pumpy” with her Mother’s boyfriend and that is the end of the matter. 

2. Trish wants to move to Hollyoaks as she “loves the village vibe”. What, the stench of death lurking round every corner? The threat of someone taking revenge on you for the slightest misdemeanour? The 99% chance that you’ll be arrested for a crime you didn’t commit at some point? Yeah, Hollyoaks is a fantastic place to live! 

3. Falling pregnant is no fun when you’ve no idea if your Husband, or his Father, is the Father. However, the Diane of 2010, who stole babies, would have been utterly delighted by this latest development. 

4. James calling Ste ‘chav in the lav’ whilst he was cleaning the toilet was just “jocular workplace banter” and most definitely not bullying. 

5. Marnie once sent back a cheese board because “it was too northern”.

It’s All Kicking Off...

Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (7th-11th December 2020)

If Edward’s antics weren’t farcical before, they certainly became so this week. As the week began, Diane was seething with jealousy after wrongly assuming that Tony had slept with Maxine. Tony soon put Diane straight, and told her she was the only one he wanted to be with. Back at the flat, Verity found out what had gone on and accused Edward of attempting to stir up trouble between Tony and Diane but he soon shocked his daughter by announcing his intention to propose to Diane. Verity was horrified by Edward’s plans and Father and Daughter became embroiled in a bitter argument, resulting in Edward telling Verity that he wished he’d saved her mother over her in the plane crash. Hurt by her Father’s words, Verity decided that it was time Diane knew just what Edward had been up to...

Diane was understandably sceptical when Verity told her about Edward’s behaviour but soon came to see that she was telling the truth and headed off to confront him. Edward told Diane that he had only acted out of love, but Diane refused to have anything more to do with him and went to inform Tony of what a bastard his Father was. Diane arrived at the caravan but received no answer. It was then that Edward snuck up behind Diane and mounted a socially distanced attack with a briefcase. Edward then placed a weapon next to an unconscious Diane before fleeing the scene. A short time later, Tony discovered Diane lying outside the caravan, just as Edward and Darren arrived. Diane was rushed to hospital, whilst Tony found himself the prime suspect in his wife’s attack and was promptly arrested. 

After being questioned, Tony was released on bail, whilst Verity confronted Edward, accusing him of attacking Diane. However, Edward turned the tables on his daughter, revealing that he’d used bribes to get her ahead in her career, and that he could take it all away by reporting her for fraud if she dared to say anything. Verity wasn’t the only one who was suspicious of Edward though, and Kurt soon confronted him over what he’d done. However, Edward was able to get one over on Kurt by telling Tony and Verity the truth about his scam business, resulting in Kurt fleeing the village. 

Meanwhile, there was drama for the Deveraux’s when Walter suddenly collapsed, and Misbah informed the family that he was experiencing kidney failure and would need a transplant. Martine summoned Toby and Celeste to the hospital and informed them that the whole family would need to be tested to see if they were a match, but Martine’s talk of tracking down Mitchell left Toby seething. Once alone with her Brother, Celeste warned him to keep his anger under control, resulting in Toby trapping her hand in a door (well that went well, didn’t it?) Grace soon arrived on the scene, and took Celeste to get her hand seen to before phoning Felix to let him know what had happened. Celeste eventually revealed that Toby was the one who had injured her, leading to a furious Felix wanting to confront him. However, knowing how dangerous her Brother was, Celeste tried to convince him to stay put, and ended up revealing that he was a killer. Felix later confronted Toby over Celeste’s claims and threatened to go to the police. Unfortunately, he was prevented from doing so when Martine arrived and revealed that Toby was a match for Walter...

Elsewhere, Peri was furious to discover that Juliet was still involved with drugs and reacted by getting back together with Jordan. Later, Victor offered Jordan his patch back, and Jordan was soon settling back into his old role by ordering Charlie and Ella to bring in more money. Ella was clearly frighted of Jordan and Victor and Charlie attempted to stand up for her, but the pair took no notice. Later in the week, Darren and Mandy were too busy discussing their mounting money worries to notice Ella doing a drug deal in the village. 

In other news this week, Brooke, Imran and Sid started a band and offered to perform at Tom and Yasmine’s wedding, whilst Sienna was forced to put on a brave face as Brody was invited to spend some time with Faith. Mercedes was delighted when Sylver moved the rest of the family into The Dog and finally, as Ollie’s drug use continued, Cindy was concerned by Luke’s worrying symptoms and tried to get him to see a doctor.

Beat it...

Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (27th April - 1st May 2020)

There was more Deveraux drama this week as the family came to terms with the fact that Felix had sold Toby and Celeste as babies. The news was even more difficult for Martine to process as she discovered that Walter had been aware all along. After her discovery, Celeste went home to share the news with Toby, who was furious and wanted to take revenge on both Felix and Martine, believing that there was no way Martine couldn’t have known. However, Celeste told her Brother that she was certain that Martine knew nothing, and suggested that she was just as much a victim as they were. 

Walter, meanwhile, tried his best to explain himself to Martine but the pair were interrupted by Felix and Lisa, and Martine was horrified to discover that she and Felix had spent the night together. Later that day, Felix was brutally attacked by Toby in the alleyway and left for dead. The following morning, news of the attack on Felix spread, and Celeste was horrified to realise that Toby had been responsible. Determined to keep up appearances, the pair went to the hospital to find out how Felix was, also hoping to find out just how much he remembered when he woke up. At the hospital, Toby was still consumed with rage, and questioned whether he should finish Felix off whilst he had the chance, however, he was interrupted by Mitchell. Mitchell soon made a terrible error when he suggested that it would be better if Felix didn’t wake up. Having heard Mitchell’s words, and knowing that the police were sniffing around, Celeste gave them Mitchell’s name, leading to his arrest. 

Elsewhere this week, Verity returned to the village and announced that she was sticking around for good. Verity’s attentions soon turned to work, and she suggested to James that they set up their own law firm. Sami saw the pair together and asked to join them as a third partner. Verity agreed, but only if Sami was able to find a suitable premises for them. Sami soon came good when Courtney agreed to sell Donovan’s to them, on the condition that Maxine was kept on in some capacity.

In other news this week, concerned about his new pills, Tony decided to stop taking them, unaware that Edward had tampered with them. Marnie returned to work after her falling out with Juliet, and finally, the Hutchinson kids discovered that Hollyoaks is not a suitable environment to grow up as they witnessed an almighty scrap between Martine and Lisa at the Easter egg hunt!

It Wasn’t Me...

Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (4th-8th May 2020)

What’s more predictable than one of Mercedes’ McQueen’s husbands meeting an unfortunate end? A Dee Valley police officer making a wrongful arrest! After being arrested by DS Cohen for the attack on Felix, Mitchell was busy protesting his innocence this week and it’s safe to say that things didn’t look good. Not only did Mitchell have a clear motive and no alibi, he had no support from Scott, who admitted to Diane that he couldn’t be certain that Mitchell was innocent. Eventually, Scott gave Mitchell a false alibi and he was released without charge, however, Scott was unable to shake the feeling that Mitchell hasn’t as innocent as he made out. Bringing up Mitchell’s history of violent acts, Scott told him that he felt like he couldn’t trust him and didn’t feel safe around him. With his relationship hanging in the balance, Mitchell begged Scott for another chance and promised to work on his anger. Later, determined to show Scott how much he meant to him, Mitchell proposed, and was delighted when Scott accepted.

Meanwhile, Felix regained consciousness but was unable to remember what had happened. Once discharged from hospital, Felix asked to meet with Celeste and tried to explain his decision to sell her and Toby. Meanwhile, over at the shop, Martine told Toby that she knew that he had been responsible for Felix’s attack. She agreed to keep quiet, but told Toby that if Mitchell had been charged, she would have dobbed him in. Toby returned home, relieved that his secret was safe, but was horrified to find that Celeste had invited Felix to move in. However, as Celeste explained, all was not as it appeared. Felix was only staying to ensure that they would be the first people to find out if his memory of the attack returned. In the meantime, Toby was warned to keep his anger under control...

Elsewhere, wanting  to welcome Verity into the family properly, Tony organised a family meal. However, he was left disappointed when Verity revealed that she’d already made plans with Edward but, keen to build a relationship with his half-sister, Tony suggested that Edward come along too. Edward accepted the invitation, much to the discomfort of Diane. After sitting down to their meal, Edward discovered that Tony had stopped taking his medication and, keen to bring his son back under his control, spiked his drink. As the drugs took effect, the whole family were horrified when Tony suddenly collapsed...

Also this week, Sally noticed that John Paul fancied George and tried to find out if he might be interested in a relationship. After some subtle-as-a-brick-to-the-face interrogation courtesy of Sally and Matthew, George revealed that he was gay, and John Paul struggled to hide his delight when he agreed to go on a date with him. Finally, Brooke and Ollie made it their mission to rid ‘Burger She Wrote’, and Cindy’s fridge, of animal products. 

5 Things We Learned This Week:

1. Lisa doesn’t know her cousin very well. “Mitchell’s not the type to go around beating people up!” What about what he did to poor Azim? Plus, if the plot dictates that Mitchell’s beating someone up, then he’s beating someone up!

2. Matthew’s ambition in life is to ride in the back of a police car. Great news, kid! You live in Hollyoaks so that dream will almost certainly come true! Hang on in there!

3. There was so much hair in the Donovan’s old salon that the place looked like a petting zoo. What a lovely image.

4. Has there ever been a bigger eyesore than the McQueen’s front room? No. No there has not. 

5. No one likes a preachy vegan. And by no one, we mean Cindy.

Poison Pen Letters...

Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (24th-28th February 2020)

Many residents of Hollyoaks have resorted to sending threatening letters to someone who’s wronged them. However, the show decided to switch things up this week as James Nightingale sent himself a poison pen letter! The drama unfolded as the village gathered for Jesse’s funeral. Courtney was keen for James to attend, which is most odd given that the pair have barely said two words to each other in the four years they’ve lived in the village. But, you know, plot and all that. James wasn’t sure but Grace insisted that he come along. After the service, everyone gathered at The Loft for the wake, where Courtney gave a speech in which she blamed herself for Jesse’s death. The guilt became too much for James and he suddenly told everyone that they should know the truth about Jesse’s death, however, Grace dragged him away before he could finish. 

The following morning, James awoke to discover an anonymous letter, revealing him as the person who’d shot Mercedes, had been delivered. Grace had also received a copy and the pair quickly met to discuss who could have been responsible. Back at the Nightingale’s, Marnie discovered the letter and confronted James. However, just then, James suddenly realised that he’d sent the letters to himself, the sleeping pills he’d taken having interfered with his memory! Whilst James was quickly assured that no one knew his secret, the same couldn’t be said for Grace and she began to worry that Mercedes knew what she’d done. Keen to protect his sister, Liam and some fellow thugs went round to The Dog to trash the place and give Mercedes a fright.

Meanwhile, the drugs drama at Hollyoaks High continued as PC George Kiss, at Nancy’s suggestion, arrived to carry out a locker search. This was very bad news for Sid, who’d just been given a load of drugs to hide by Jordan. With the help of Juliet, the drugs were quickly removed from the locker, but Sid was horrified when Juliet revealed that she’d thrown them away. Jordan was equally as angry when he discovered what had happened and insisted that Juliet would have to pay him back somehow...

Elsewhere, Tony was busy working to get his marriage back on track but, true to form, Edward was on hand to cause trouble. Keen to win Diane back, Edward gifted her an expensive diamond necklace. However, just as he was putting it on her, Tony arrived back. Diane was able to hide the necklace with a scarf but was unable to remove it as Tony took her straight down to the restaurant for a romantic meal. Whilst there, Tony saw the necklace and questioned Diane about where it had come from. Although Diane insisted it was an old one she’d just re-discovered, it was clear that Tony wasn’t totally convinced. Once back at home, Tony confided in Edward about the situation, and Edward was only too happy to plant seeds of doubt in Tony’s mind about how faithful Diane had been to him whilst he was at the pig farm...

In other news this week, Romeo and Celeste continued their affair, however, Romeo began to panic that Toby was onto them, especially when he was mugged by an unknown assailant later in the week. The culprit was later revealed to be Jordan. Finally, Leah celebrated her 13th birthday. Which is strange as I’m sure it was only 2-3 years ago that Amy gave birth to her on the kitchen floor.

A Problem Shared...

Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (16th-20th March 2020)

Darren finally found someone to confide in this week as his struggle with depression continued. As the week began, Darren obsessively involved himself in several projects in a desperate search for a distraction, much to the confusion of his family. After much nagging from Mandy, Darren eventually fixed the chair he’d been making for Oscar, however, the youngster broke the chair, leading to Darren becoming angry with him. Darren was left stung by Charlie and Oscar’s reaction, and Mandy was also left annoyed when she returned home to find the chair in pieces, believing that Darren had failed to do what she’d asked. The following day, it was time for the much anticipated stand up night at The Hutch, but Mandy was left confused when Darren insisted that he didn’t feel up to attending. Mandy was later seen moaning to Nancy and Cindy about Darren’s recent behaviour. Her words about how aloof Darren had been recently seemed to resonate with Kyle and he headed round to see him...

Despite Darren insisting he didn’t want to see anyone, Ella let Kyle into the house. Darren tried to put up a front and insisted that everything was fine, however, he later acknowledged that it was relief to have someone to talk to. Kyle, who was having his own problems, what with Nancy failing to match his enthusiasm for their upcoming wedding, proved to be understanding, and told Darren that he was likely suffering from depression. Kyle even told Darren about his ‘friend’ who suffered from the same condition, however, as Kyle continued his story, it became obvious he was talking about himself. The two men agreed to support each other and Darren began searching the internet for help. However, Kyle’s struggles clearly weren’t over, and he approached Jordan looking for drugs again...

Meanwhile, Edward’s jealousy towards Tony and Diane continued as he and Verity remembered his late wife on their anniversary. There was some good news for Edward later in the week when he won an award at work, and he insisted that the whole family come along to see him accept it. As Tony took to the stage to tell everyone how proud he was of his Dad, Edward and Diane were backstage discussing their affair. However, as both agreed that Tony should never be told about what had gone on, they failed to realise that Edward’s mic was broadcasting the exchange to the shocked crowd. Tony was left understandably devastated by the bombshell and insisted that his marriage was over. However, he was given food for thought when Luke brought up his affair with Sinead and pointed out what a tough time Diane had had during his absence. Realising that Luke was right, Tony returned home and issued Diane with an ultimatum; leave with Edward, or stay and help rebuild their marriage. Diane chose to stay with Tony, leaving Edward seething. 

In other news this week, believing she’d never amount to anything, Juliet decided to keep selling drugs for Jordan, despite last week’s run-in with the police. Liam was annoyed to learn that James was working for get Warren out of prison, and finally, Mitchell decided to help Toby and Celeste track down their Father, despite warnings from Martine.

A Picture Paints a Thousand Words...

Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (3rd - 7th February 2020)

It was a difficult week for Mitchell as he found himself arrested for a hate crime, outed to his Grandfather and kicked out of his home. As the week began, there was delight for Azim when he was offered his dream job in London, and he asked Scott to move down there with him. After consideration, Scott accepted Azim’s offer, leaving Mitchell devastated, and he later flung homophobic abuse at Azim outside The Dog. The following day, Sami found Azim deeply shaken over what had happened, and urged his Brother to report the attack. However, Azim was reluctant, so Sami took matters into his own hands, and DS Cohen later turned up at Toby and Celeste’s party to arrest Mitchell for a hate crime...

Azim refused to press charges, and so Mitchell was released. Back in the village, Toby and Celeste had hatched a plan to out Mitchell to his family and, using Lisa, Toby was able to gain access to the flat and planted a photo of Scott and Mitchell kissing in Walter’s Bible. Walter was horrified when he discovered the photo and confronted his Grandson, who initially insisted that the photo must have been doctored in some way. However, Mitchell eventually admitted that the photo was genuine. A furious Walter insisted that Mitchell come to church with him to repent, telling his family that his Brother had died due to his sexuality. Mitchell stunned Martine and Lisa by agreeing to go to church, however, he soon had a change of heart when Walter turned on Martine, and blamed her for the way that Mitchell had turned out. Mitchell finally snapped and told his Grandfather that he was fed up of hiding who he really was.

Unable to accept Mitchell’s sexuality, Walter threw him out of the house. Meanwhile, over at The Hutchinson’s, Azim was devastated when Scott informed him that he wouldn’t be going to London with him. After Azim had left, Scott found Mitchell by the jetty. After a chat, the pair made up and shared a kiss. With the Deveraux family falling apart, Toby and Celeste prepared to put the next stage of their plan into action, and headed off to sleep in separate rooms...

Elsewhere, Tony was continuing to struggle with life back in the village, and was left hurt when Edward told him to ‘man up’. However, his Father’s words did seem to have some effect, and Diane returned home to find that Tony had prepared a romantic candlelit dinner for them. However, Tony later suffered another panic attack when Diane began banging about in the kitchen. Although Diane was sympathetic, she urged to Tony to contact the psychologist again, but Tony refused to do so.

Elsewhere, Nancy continued in her quest to uncover the identity of the person who’d stabbed her whilst Marnie, Misbah and Mandy all believed that Sid knew more than he was letting on. Liberty began to panic about Brody’s safety when Damon revealed that he hadn’t heard from him and, finally, realising that Romeo was besotted with her, Celeste decided to seduce him!

A Week of Stupid Ideas...

Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (2nd - 6th December 2019)

Brody and Liberty took drastic action in their bid to help Sienna become a Mother this week, as the pair decided to sleep together! As the week began, Sienna was optimistic as she prepared to apply to foster Sid, however, the teenager knew that Brody and Liberty didn’t want him around and told Sienna that, although he was grateful, he didn’t think he should live with her. Although upset, Sienna understood, and soon turned her attentions back to the surrogacy. Knowing that that’s no longer an option, Brody and Liberty panicked but neither could bring themselves to tell Sienna that the last of her eggs wasn’t viable. Instead, they came up with the idea to sleep together so that Sienna could get her baby! Whilst Sienna enjoyed an impromptu party with Martine and Lisa, Brody and Liberty headed to the love boat for a spot of baby making. The following morning, Sienna was rather worse for wear and in her hungover state, failed to notice the atmosphere between her sister and boyfriend...

Meanwhile, Cindy was on cloud nine as she prepared to move back into her old house, however, Luke was preoccupied by some worrying symptoms he kept experiencing. With the support of Darren, Luke headed to the hospital for a scan, leaving Cindy to move into the house alone. Cindy was furious with Luke for his lack of help, but Darren tried to cool the situation by informing Mandy that Luke was out buying a ring for Cindy. However, as Cindy raised a toast to her new life, Luke was at the hospital receiving his test results, and was devastated to be told that he had frontotemporal dementia. Unable to share the news with Cindy, and wanting to protect her from seeing yet another husband die, Luke told Cindy that their relationship was over.

Elsewhere, Yasmine made it her mission to find Finn a job. After being turned down by Marnie, Finn was offered a trial selling Christmas trees and was pleased that his new boss wasn’t fussed that he’d been in prison. The following day, Finn started work, but was horrified when he realised that their first drop off was Hollyoaks High. Although Finn initially waited outside the building, Juliet running off with his hat forced him inside, and he soon found himself back in the classroom where he’d raped John Paul (AKA, Hollyoaks High’s only classroom). Finn was found by Sally and Nancy, who were quick to inform his boss just why he’d been in prison. Finn later returned home with the news that he’d been fired, which was awkward as Diane, Yazz and the kids had thrown a party for him to celebrate his new job. 

Later, Yasmine overheard Edward talking to Sally about Finn, telling her that she should phone the police the next time Finn does anything that makes her feel uncomfortable. Yasmine decided to do some digging about in Edward’s past, and was shocked to come across an article about Edward being arrested on suspicion of his wife’s death. Yasmine shared her discovery with Finn, but he didn’t react well and told Yasmine that he didn’t need her to fight his battles for him. The following day, Edward suggested to Finn that he attempt to show the community how sorry he was for his past actions by giving a speech at the opening of Marnie’s new French-inspired patisserie. Unsurprisingly, it didn’t go well, and Finn was booed off stage.

In other news this week, Mercedes was discharged from hospital but refused to tell the police that she’d lied about Sylver. However, Mercy was clearly spooked when Grace told her that, whilst she was busy framing Sylver, the real shooter was still out there. Jesse and Courtney attempted to impress newcomers, Toby and Celeste and finally, Sid was delighted when Sally agreed to give him another chance by returning to school.
