The Final Review

That's right. The final Elvis film to review. This was a project that started back in 2022 and after 3 years it's finally coming to an end.

Disclaimer: For my tier list I’m basing this off of a one on one fight with no weapons or no outside interference. If a character has to rely on a weapon to win they’re typically ranked lower. If a character has to fight more than one person at a time, I’ll look at it on a case by case basis. Age, size and general background are factors that will be taken into consideration. Since a lot of those details are going to be up to interpretation as these are characters and not real people, feel free to share your own thoughts.

The flag on the governor's car had only 48 stars which was used as of July 3rd, 1959. While the film is meant to be contemporary, the flag was no longer accurate at the time of filming in 1961. Something to consider is that the book was published in 1959 and the events in it take place during the summer. Toby also mentions Willie Mays stealing home. Since this is a real life baseball player we can look up when this was done. In 1959, he stole home twice: May 27, and June 7th. Toby thinking of that straight away is enough for me to say this starts in May 1959 and covers the summer of 1959.

If we consider the book's canon, Toby is explicitly stated to be 22 years. I think this still applies when you consider that Toby is meant to be inexperienced with... everything. With his given strength in the film, he is in the peak of physical ability. I know this will make him younger than Elvis, but it fits to have him be this young.

Toby hitting the guard will not count. There was no intent to fight on either side. Toby wanting to disarm him is not the same as intending to hurt someone. However, self defense is very key to Toby's character as he uses the most realistic application of fighting skills. The average person isn't going to just walk up and punch a stranger. Even if they do, self defense is more commonly used than your average bar fight technique of just punching. Therefore, going forward, what will count is whether there is an intent to harm Toby and if he physically strikes them. What Toby understands is irrelevant as I will describe later.

This is a cut and dry self defense case. Even if Toby understood this situation as being a hypothetical, he still understood that what these gangsters were doing could happen in real life. Being in a headlock is always dangerous, so being able to get out of it quickly is important. It's a two on one situation, but Toby only uses self defense without a weapon making this count.

Toby incapacitating these two in a matter of seconds while being in a headlock is a definite sign of skill. Mental capacity is an underrated factor in fights as you might not be able to react under pressure as you would in a hypothetical. So for Toby to react as if he is under pressure and still execute calculated strikes, gives him high marks. If you consider that he did genuinely suffer permanent damage to his back or spine, his ability to throw a grown man is even more impressive since a permanent disability usually renders a task like this almost impossible. You might consider his lack of reaction to any pain as either a strength or weakness depending on what he has to do, but I just don't have anything to suggest anything either way. Toby never mentions being in pain so we don't know just how bad his condition really is.

Toby was looking right at someone about to shoot him and judo chops him in the throat. While in self defense, Toby had intent to hurt in this situation. A judo chop to the throat can be possibly fatal if it causes the windpipe to collapse. And Toby only thought these were hunters that were drunk.

Once again, Toby acting in a non-hypothetical situation involving danger and pressure shows he has the mental capacity to handle real threats. His choice to judo chop a gangster in the throat had the potential to give him a canonical body count had this been a serious film and not a comedy.

Toby has the ability to kill someone with his bare hands. The movie treats his judo chop seriously in that you feel a sense of force behind each blow. I have physically winced in reaction to his strikes because when he does use that ability, it feels calculated. The amount of control over his emotions and his ability to think under pressure make him absolutely dangerous.

Toby is easily in S tier. I didn't even mention until now that Toby only had one judo lesson in the army before hurting his back. Yes he is also stated to having skills as a wrestler but those judo chops are what puts him so high. After just one lesson he already mastered the precision needed to cause devastating effects to his opponents. After all, what's the point of having brute force if you can never hit the bullseye. Toby can and has a full understanding of what to do if he's in danger. His ability to avoid being physically attacked is just as important as his attacks itself. That gives him a well rounded profile worthy of being S tier.

Anniversary of Follow That Dream

So April 11, 1962 one of my favorite Elvis films was released.

It was a screenplay as adapted from the 1959 novel, Pioneer, Go Home!

Directed by Gordon Douglas and adapted by Charles Lederer, this film provided a nice spin to the novel while still keeping key elements. It's the type of novel where you get an in-depth analysis of the main character, Toby Kwimper. While the movie only gives us glimpses, the novel provides his exact narrative and thought process. It's like if we're seeing the movie's events play through Toby's eyes.

I highly recommend reading it because to me, it gives you the idea that Toby is more than just dumb or naive. It's available online as a pdf so check it out.

I know the context is that Elvis' getting an achievement award from selling 75 million records. They needed to get a pic of him and his good boy singer award.

But let's face it, I'm totally imagining this is Toby getting his picture taken with his high school diploma.

It's 1961 which is the same year FTD was filmed so I just can't help but see Toby instead of Elvis.

Also his face is so soft real plump lips I can't.
