We had an active shooter drill at work this week. Not that unusual. Healthcare facilities have code drills all the time. This wasn’t our usual though. No crazy Dr. K walking down the halls shooting people with Nerf guns. 

No, this one involved actual law enforcement personnel shooting off blanks in our facility. That’s the kind of thing it takes to get your heart really racing. We’d had a training session weeks before to teach us how to react in said active shooter situation, which basically consisted of GET THE FUCK OUT, if you can’t get the fuck out HIDE, if you can’t hide FIGHT. 

The problem is we were all waiting for it. We knew it was going to happen. We need a drill that no one knows is coming. Hospitals and clinics are vulnerable and we have to make decisions that people in other workplaces might not have to make, 

Imagine this... you’re in the OR with a patient having a procedure done and they announce a active shooter. Do you leave your patient on the table? That’s not in our wheelhouse as medical professionals. We’re here for the patient. At the end of the day that’s the ultimate truth. 

Technically, the drill was a success but I’m still pissed that I live in a world where this is necessary. Everything seems even more out of control right now. Donald Trump is within a hair’s breath of the Oval office, the UK votes to leave the EU, and people are worried about how much a girl drank at a party instead of rape culture.
