The Exquisite Thief (1919), dir. Todd Browning
Hungarian actor Bela Lugosi first played Count Dracula in a 1927 Broadway production. He later starred in a tour of the show in the West Coast where he caught the attention of Hollywood. He was not Universal’s choice to star in the 1931 film version but after looking at other options, director Todd Browning cast him. While the film was popular, Lugosi never achieved the success of Boris Karloff, largely due to his heavy accent. Lugosi was type cast for most of his career as horror villains.
