I’m enjoying “The Vampire Lestat” on AMC. It’s such an exciting original take on the story. Lestat’s mother, Gabrielle, is played by Jennifer Ehle. The character is Italian but married Lestat’s father in France. I haven’t been able to figure out what accent Ehle is using.
What accent do think Jennifer Ehle is using for Gabrielle?

BELA LUGOSI as COUNT DRACULA Dracula — 1931, dir. Tod Browning
I saw “Dracula” at a movie theater last October. It has not aged well. Lugosi’s performance can be described as “hammy” and all those close-up to his eye made it even worse. People in the audience giggled every time he came on screen.
The rest of the cast was fine, in particular Edward Van Sloan as Van Helsing and Helen Chandler as Miba Seward.
Are you a fan of vampire stories? I’d like to suggest AMC’s series “Interview with the Vampire” (2 seasons available). And a follow-up series will be released on June 7 - “The Vampire Lestat”. (Even if you’re not a vampire fan, the series has a great cast and is cleverly written - worth checking out.)
Both series are based on books by Anne Rice. She wrote Interview while living in San Francisco in the 1970s. Her 5-year-old daughter died (leukemia?) which helps explain why “Interview” includes the character Claudia - a 5-year-old girl vampire.
Rice then moved to New Orleans where she wrote “The Vampire Lestat”. He was the villain of the first book - but Rice fell in love with him - and she turned him into a misunderstood hero.
That’s when I first started reading her books. In all, she eventually wrote a couple dozen. BUT I only like the first 5.
Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt starred in the 1994 movie of Interview. Cruise was totally miscast as Lestat but otherwise the movie was okay. Pitt looked beautiful and the movie introduced Kristen Dunst who played Claudia vampire child (aged up to 12).
There was a 2002 follow-up movie called “Queen of the Damned” (based on Rice’s 3rd vampire book). Stuart Townsend played Lestat. He was better than Cruise but the movie itself was so-so.
AMC started a series in 2022 of “Interview” - with two seasons to cover the book. They made substantial charges to plot and characters - the biggest change was making 2 of the main vampires African America in the 1920s. This altered the subtext considerably - to the better. Another change was that in the books, the vampires don’t have sex with each other. BUT in the series, the vampires are very gay.
While all of the cast is good - Sam Reid as Lestat is perfect - a passionate brat and sometimes monster. I’m looking forward to season 3 and will resubscribe to AMC when it starts.
(BTW - in the book, Lestat is tired of the other vampires hiding in the shadows - so he decides to become a rock star with songs that reveal all the vampire secrets. He does this to force the other vampires to show themselves.)
If you’re not interested in subscribing to AMC, I think season 1 of Interview is available on Netflix, maybe season 2 too?
