A year ago today we lost Todd Serious, lead singer of The Rebel Spell and all around awesome person. Here's one of my last conversations with him. So put on some Rebel Spell, crack a beer (if that's your thing) and give it a read.

When I was at Pouzza Fest, the good folks at Ottawa Showbox took some time to record a few songs in an alley for me. I’ll post the rest this week, but this first one, I took an opportunity to try a new song I wrote about my dear departed friend Todd Serious, of the Rebel Spell. On Sunday November 9th I did an interview with Todd Serious of The Rebel  Spell. I was saving it for the zine I’m (almost finished) working on, but in light of his death, I felt it appropriate to publish it sooner than I’d planned.

A Facebook friend of a friend found this at This Ain’t Hollywood in Hamilton, one of the best punk-friendly bars I’ve ever been to. 

I saw The Rebel Spell play there I don’t know how many times and had so many great conversations with Todd Serious there over the years.

I’ll never forget the time when they were playing a matinee show at This Ain’t Hollywood on June 26st, 2010, the first day of the Toronto G20 and G20 protests. Or, “The Day Toronto Had a Baby Riot and the Police Flipped their Shit.” The Rebel Spell had their merch set up on a table that faced the bar and the bar’s TVs. We’d been talking about animal rights politics, and he’d managed to convince me to go vegan. We were sitting at the table watching the TV reports about people setting cop cars on fire, the ridiculous and illegal ketteling that was going on when Todd realized “fuck. We’re supposed to play in Toronto tonight.” The look on his face was absolutely priceless, like a mix of surprise, concern, and hearing the punchline of a really good joke.

I first met Todd in the kitchen at the Sweatlodge punk house in Kitchener in November 2007. The Rebel Spell were playing a last-minute show at the house, and I'd never heard of them until Jesse at the house phoned me up to tell me that I needed to come see this band.

That night changed my life and The Rebel Spell have been one of my favourite bands since then. Hearing this news hit me like a fucking tonne of bricks. Todd was one of the kindest and smartest people I've ever met in punk rock, and every single shows of theirs I saw was completely unforgettable. Todd's voice was so inspiring and powerful.

My deepest condolences to the rest of his band and all of his family and friends. He'll always live on through The Rebel Spell's albums and our memories. Rest in Power.
