Fave Romantic Movies 15/15: The Art of Us

This movie is one of my favorite of Steve and Taylor’s Hallmark movies. I think they are both really great and I enjoy watching them together. Nothing about the movie is super special and their isn’t really much to it besides the romance. I just really like them together so I really enjoyed this movie. I loved the art in this because it was so beautiful and I love how they connected through it and he expressed himself through it. I really liked the dog being included too. Harper is a relatable character because she’s kind of lost her passion for her job and she’s struggling to find peace and happiness again. I really like Tom. He’s sweet, laid back, really charming and cute. I really like that he was a veteran and isn’t super social or successful. You don’t see a lot of that with Hallmark and Steve played him really well. They both have really good friends that I enjoyed. These two had immediate chemistry. They got along the whole movie and did not hold back on the flirting at all. They knew that they liked each other the whole time and they didn’t fight it. I like that they worked together on Harper’s idea/scheme. They really pushed each other to do the things they loved and I enjoyed that. It’s just a typical sweet fun cheesy Hallmark movie that I love.

Okay, so after sleeping and checking the Darkside tags, I’ve come to the conclusion that this fandom probably consists of 5 people and none of y’all probably know what I’m talking about, so let me explain (because I’m going to probably be posting stuff for the fandom and you should be prepared).

Darkside is a series written by Tom Becker in, I believe, 2007. The story centers around a teenager named Jonathan who, after his dad falls ill and someone attempts to kidnap him (the kid, not the dad), ends up stumbling into a mysterious region of London that was cut off from the rest of London in the late 1800s. I’m not going to go into much detail, cuz all the books are pretty short, but I honestly love the characters. I think it’s one of the few series I’ve read where I loved just about every single character, regardless of how terrible they are because they’re all just so interesting. And it’s definitely one of those series that tricks you often because you never know who is aligned with whom and what they’re going to do. Some of the nicest people turn out to be the worst, some of the worst make for great allies. You just kinda have to read and see.

My only gripe is that the series is way. too. short. I mean, I get it, he wrote all five books over a span of 3 years, if the publishing dates are right. But they really feel like they ought to have been twice as long. I don’t mean there should have been ten books (the plot is great, he left off at a good place, and going any further with the timeline might have made things get wonky), but just that each book could have been longer. There’s a lot of missed opportunities for relationship building and I would have loved to see more world building and more personal details. But, over all, it’s a really fun series and I definitely recommend it to anyone who likes mysterious, gothic-y toned, everyone’s-trying-to-kill-us-and-we-all-need-a-nap-but-no-we-have-a-villain-to-punch type stories.

Things you should know: - There’s a twist on werewolves. - Actually, there’s a twist on a lot of supernatural creatures. - Vampires are extremely traditional—and by that I mean Dracula/Nosferatu kinda stuff, which is a fun change. - “Everyone’s evil here” is a lie. - It feels like there were about a dozen ships hinted at and only 1 was confirmed. (Which makes it even more of a shame there’s not people writing fanfics because GUYS he’s making it so easy!) - You might cry at the very end.

Now go forth and read. And then come find me so we can talk about it. I seriously don’t have anyone to talk about this series to and it frustrates the hell outta me.

Back Home Again – a Tribute to John Denver features Tom Becker, a former member of the legendary folk-rock group The New Christy Minstrels and the acclaimed Waynesboro Symphony.

The Wildlife Center of Virginia hosts the Tribute Band on Sunday, June 5, at 3 p.m. Tickets range from $25 to $35 for the public. Orchestra level only.
