You’d woken up to two small pairs of hands reaching over the side of the bed. It was still much too early to be awake, but your twins were awake and trying to climb into your bed. Still half asleep, you bent over the side of the bed to pick them up one at a time and drag them onto the bedspread.
Once they were both sitting on the covers, you whispered, “What are you two doing up? ‘S still so early. Mummy and Daddy are sleepy.”
“We wan’ snuggle,” your little girl, Eleanor, replied in a whisper. Wyatt, her brother, who also appeared to still be half asleep, nodded in agreement.
Your heart nearly melted at their answer, and you agreed to let them crawl underneath the covers with you. They wouldn’t want to do this forever, so you wanted to take advantage of the time while they did. “Okay,” you nodded, lifting the covers so they could join you, “But we’re all gonna close our eyes for a bit longer, okay?”
Always a daddy’s girl, Eleanor pressed herself into Tom’s side, who was still fast asleep. He didn’t have to be awake to curl an arm around her, though, and pull her closer. Wyatt joined you after a moment, placing himself on top of your chest, his head resting right over your heart.
They were both cuddly kids — took after their dad — but you couldn’t really complain. With your hand rubbing soft circles over your little boy’s back, you asked in a whisper, “Comfy, love bug?” He nodded in agreement, and it didn’t take long until he was fast asleep against your chest.
When you woke up again, both of your kids were still fast asleep next to you, but Tom was missing from the pile of limbs and blankets. You’d hoped it would be a quiet morning — cuddles and breakfast in bed with all of your loves — so you hoped Tom hadn’t gotten up to get the day started.
Thankfully, Tom appeared in the doorway a few minutes later, a mug in each hand. Noticing you were awake, he couldn’t help but grin at you as he crossed the room, moving to your side of the bed. His voice was soft, still raspy as he whispered, “Morning, love.”
“G’morning, baby,” you whispered in reply, shifting up to sit against the headboard, moving carefully so you wouldn’t wake your babies. You pushed your chin up towards your husband as you grasped your mug in both hands, holding it to your chest. Tom took the hint, leaning down to press a soft kiss to your lips. “Thanks for the coffee.”
“Anytime, love. When did these two end up in bed with us?” he asked as he rounded the bed back to his side, slipping under the covers to sit against the headboard, too.
You glanced at the clock and then let out a yawn, “Hour and a half ago maybe? Think El talked Wyatt into it, he was still half asleep.” You glanced down at Wyatt, whose head was resting in your lap now, and brushed your hand through his hair.
Tom laughed quietly, taking a sip of his tea, “Sounds about right. Figured we could have a lazy day?”
“Ugh, you read my mind. Breakfast in bed? We can cuddle and watch cartoons with these stinkers. I’ll have to get groceries at some point today, but that can wait til later.”
“Sounds perfect,” Tom nodded in agreement, leaning over your sleeping babies to press another soft kiss to your lips.
