Public Collectors publication #46 was completed in early August.
The Ex + Tom Cora Scrapbook
For this publication—a collaboration with Experimental Sound Studio’s Creative Audio Archive—I was invited by their Archives and Media Manager Matt Mehlan to once again dig through the recordings made by Malachi Ritscher. Rather than focus on the fullness of Ritscher’s life and work like I did in 2014, I chose just one recording: a concert by The Ex + Tom Cora that I also attended with my friend Anthony Elms at Lounge Ax in Chicago on February 26, 1994. The booklet includes my writings about The Ex and this concert, a reprint of a Chicago Reader article on the show by Bill Meyer, recollections by other friends that attended that night, some printed ephemera related to the band and concert, and some memories shared by then singer G.W. Sok who even dug up a photobooth strip that the band took after their set, using the Lounge Ax photo machine thingy. This publication was commissioned by ESS. It’s a members’ perk for people that support ESS which will be available soon with a cassette facsimile of Malachi’s original tape. Keep your eyes posted on https://ess.org/ if you’d like a copy of the booklet with the tape. It should be out shortly. For Public Collectors friends and fans of The Ex, I have a very limited number of extra copies of just this booklet which comes with a download code for Malachi’s recording. I’ll give away 7 of these. To get one, order at least three Public Collectors publications from Half Letter Press and tell me five of your favorite songs by The Ex in the order notes. If you don’t see this post soon and want to check to see if those free copies are still available, you can contact me here. Otherwise, go join ESS and become a member and get one that way once you can! They do incredible work and deserve your patronage. – Marc Fischer
