Sometimes it can be hard to tell what position Wheeler III is arguing for, whether he agrees with what he interprets Derrida or Davidson as saying or if that's "just" an interpretation, even if it's not just exegesis. "...the hope that thinking through the metaphysical issues addressed by Derrida and Davidson would give me answers", not necessarily adopting their answers.

Maybe that would account for apparent inconsistencies?

Thoughts on Terry Eagleton?

Mixed. I'm against his early scientific structuralist Marxist cultural studies Literary Theory attitude, as seen here, but am more appreciative of his later After Theory Catholic-gadfly man-of-letters approach, as in his great polemic against the New Atheists. He's also a very good practical critic; I know his comments on a novel or poem will always be illuminating even if I disagree. I still broadly dissent from his whole worldview, I believe, as it tends toward a basic illiberalism. I can't remember where, but he once said the good thing about going from Catholicism to Marxism is that you never have to be a liberal. Nevertheless, this allows him to score some good points against those liberals (especially English ones of a certain generation like Dawkins or McEwan) who naively favor positivism and empiricism, who don't understand that liberalism itself is nothing if it is not fortified by some form or other of idealism in both the technical and colloquial senses of the word.
