The Doobie Brothers - Tom Johnston
Song Review: The Doobie Brothers - “Takin’ it to the Streets” (Live, 1976)
The Doobie Brothers’ Steely Dan era sure had its moments. And one of them - just released after a half-century in the vault - encapsulates all that was so exciting about it.
Poor camerawork, terrible lighting and sound issues reveal why the band never issued this live-in-1976 version of “Takin’ it to the Streets.” But they might’ve made an exception, given Michael McDonald’s youthful exuberance and the short-lived, triple-guitar attack of Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, Tom Johnson and Patrick Simmons. Add a horn section and spirited backgrounds and, well, these Doobies knew how to burn, brother.
Johnston was soon gone and McDonald was soon helming the band and taking it in a more-lightweight direction. But this early mix of bikers and yachtsmen could’ve really been something if the band could’ve kept it runnin’.
