I love Daria, but I don't like that they made Daria and Tom a couple, it feels out of character for Daria and I hate Tom, he's annoying 😭 🙏
I wouldn't say the ship ruined the entire show, but I'm not a huge fan of episodes that revolve almost completely around their relationship.
Daria never seemed like the person to date her friend's ex to me so it feels like it just doesn't fit. Honestly I like Daria and Jane as a ship way more.
This is a flyer for the watch-along in NYC when the 5th season of Daria's premiere was set to air. on February 19th, 2001.
I really think Helen wouldn't have an issue with Daria and Jane sleeping with one another. I think she's astounded because Daria somehow got a fucking bunk bed up there without her noticing. And that Daria's smoking.
Me too, Noelle
Happy birthday to one of my closest friends @bibeavis! I truly believe we have a friendship that transcends fandoms. From bonding over Smiling Friends fankids to our weekly streams of Beavis and Butthead, Daria, and many other shows and movies, I’ve had a blast discovering new things with you and having interesting, in-depth conversations about everything from our favorite media to real-world issues. I think we’re really on each other’s level and I consider myself so lucky to be your friend 🩷
Both of us absolutely HATED Tom the entire time we were watching Daria (literally booing every time he showed up on screen) so I had to express that through Noelle. Jane and Daria what were you thinking 😭
I hope you like this and I hope you have a very happy birthday! 🎉
Tom, to Daria and Jane: You guys need to stop introducing me as "the boy you shared."
only one of them is right and i can only assume we are all on the same page about who
I never thought about this much because I never really cared about the character, but I keep thinking about the implications around Tom's role as a character on Daria. While some have argued he only existed to introduce drama between Jane and Daria and get some character development out of the latter, I find it very disturbing that his role essentially amounted to telling Daria more often than not that she was wrong. And that Daria found herself more upset whenever this happened between them compared to the other times people have called her out on her behavior.
Like it would've been one thing if it had been a character who was a friend, but within the context of a romantic relationship is just feels... corrective? Out of everyone who manages to rattle Daria's core, the one who ends up doing it the most is her boyfriend. While there's nothing negative to say about Tom within the show. Aside from his break-up with Jane, the show did little to really portray him as anything but "some guy." You could argue that was deliberate because he's Daria's first boyfriend ever, but there's something which feels so... insidious about the way he finally gets together with her.
And not for nothing, re-examining the break-up between Jane and Tom, the closer it got to the end I feel like Tom was perhaps more of a guilty party than Daria was. I know this might be biased, but it felt like Tom was the one who made more of an effort to get to Daria than the other way around. He sought her out in Fire and in the dye job episode, he's the one who asks Daria into his car for seemingly no reason and then acts defensive about the fact he's falling out of love with Jane in a way that really sounds like he's goading Daria into finally doing something by assuring her it's not as big a deal.
"It happens all the time. It's nobody's fault."
We know Daria is smart but we also know she's emotionally shielded herself from this sort of thing, which left her unprepared for how Tom approached her and the confusion it caused. And I think Tom knew that.
