Health care, national pharmacare, climate action, green energy and affordable housing loom large in candidate's remarks to NDP riding association members
The Parry Sound Muskoka NDP riding association has its candidate for the 2019 federal election.
Members confirmed nominee Tom Young as their acclaimed candidate, during an afternoon event at the Bracebridge Memorial Arena on June 23. The decision was met with a standing ovation, cheers and well-wishes from the roughly 40 people in attendance.
Young shared a bit of his personal history, which included the loss of his parents to health complications at a young age, his separation from his five siblings as the children entered the foster care system and the love later shown to him by his adoptive parents.
“They are really the ones that taught me my values,” said the longtime Muskoka resident, who was born in Huntsville and moved to Bracebridge as a teen. “Work hard because nothing is ever handed to you, respect everyone and treat them well, and nothing is more important than family.”
Young, now a father himself, said he had worked in many industries, including hospitality, sales, radio and construction. He is a former municipal employee who worked for 12 years in public works for the Town of Bracebridge and four years as operations supervisor at the Township of Georgian Bay.

Artist Research (1/8): John Willis & Tom Young. Recycled Realities
Photographers John Willis & Tom Young collab together to create a project based on black and white imagery of stacks of discarded paper and landscapes. They created a printed book called Recycled Realities, which was published back in 2006. The pictures were taken close to their hometown in Massachusetts. The idea behind taking photos was to display the dullness of the bales of discarded paper while creating a natural abstract visual. The landscapes provide the idea of the limited time human beings have. With the black and white filter, it provides the sense that time stands still.
The book didn’t contain titles or names for the photographs taken, but my favorite was this image of discarded music pieces. My first impression of the image was a little sad because seeing physical music discarded like this made me feel bad for the music that never got its chance to be heard. It's also bittersweet because of the nostalgia it brought back when I played for the Wind-Ensemble band in high school.
