The journalist, the newspaper column, the comedian slash broadcaster and the video response.
On Sunday 14th of August, Australian journalist Miranda Devine wrote a column that was published in the newspaper for which she works, The Daily Telegraph (Sydney). The column, The problem with a fatherless society was also published on the newspapers website and blog. In it, Devine's writing is incoherent, unstructured, disjointed in argument and narrative structure, and conveys thinly veiled or utterly naked sexist, homophobic, racist and xenophobic attitudes. As a result, Devine and her piece have generated a high number of comments amongst the general Australian internet chatter and tweets.
Many blog posts, comments on the Daily Telegraph and other newspaper websites and tweets sent to her, or about her, have sought to disagree with her article but damaged the strength of their refutation by including (or solely comprising of) ad hominem statements. For me, one response to Devine's article has stood out from the rest.
Posted on Youtube by comedian, radio broadcaster and, in his own words, 'professional homosexual' Tom Ballard, the 13 minutes response - Miranda Devine: What The F&*k Are You Talking About? (language warning) is considered, avoids labelling or insulting Devine and, aside from one or two comedically styled "edgy" one-liners, is free from purposefully provocative statements or controversial attacks. It attacks what any good counter argument is meant to attack: the content, and not the author, of the argument it counters. Ballard points out, with droll exasperation, that Devine's greatest weakness lies in the unstructured way in which she attempted to draw connections between largely unrelated points, simply because they were all topical at the time, and poorly segue from one to another.
Whatever your politics and opinions on the matters both Devine and Ballard discuss, it is difficult to deny the profound difference in quality between their pieces. The truly fascinating and disappointing aspect for me was that the poorly written, poorly argued piece was published by a newspaper and was the work of a Journalist. The detailed, well crafted and articulate - not simply because it was spoken - response, was from the broadcaster/comedian on a free-to-publish Internet medium.
I am not surprised at Ballard's ability and his outstanding efforts in this instance, having been a long-term admirer of his work, but once again I am surprised and disappointed in the quality, (read: lack there of) of the material being printed by major newspapers.
