Tombtober - Day 1 - First House

Ninth House for Tombtober 2025

It's a real embuggerance, trying to transfer traditional art to screen. Anyway here's the image I painted for the Ninth House. I'm reasonably happy with it. Some things turned out really well, even!

Booones, so many bones :D Technical details under the cut.

Japanese watercolours (gansai) on 300 gsm paper. Photographed in different lights with a little tweaking to better look like the original. Also, scanners always screw me over, and, I've never learned to work in digital.

I use primarily natural hair brushes. The paints are from Tambi (small regular, and Galaxy Granulating #2 palettes) and from Kobaien, one of the finest ink and pigment-makers in Japan, also very old, who I was privileged to receive a full palette of "sumi" colours from to act as a tester. It's amazing.

I also used Molotow (sic) masking liquid pump marker. It showed a few of the classic problems such fluids do but was easy to use.

Tombtober Day 2 - Second House

Sixth House and Seventh House, hopelessly intertwined, cushioned by roses, pierced by thorns, through Palamedes Sextus and Dulcinea Septimus.

This was the image that came into my head, and settled there. I couldn't change my mind, so, I had to paint it.

Also, scanners always screw me over, and, I've never learned to work in digital. I don't have time to get into it, I want to paint with my physical mediums instead...

I use mainly natural hair brushes, although synthetic ones have come a long way lately!

Fifth House for Tombtober 2025

Well, this was a bugger to transfer to the screen! It's always difficult with traditional art, to digitise, and I only use my mobile phone camera, at that. Must be the spirits and magic not liking to be caught like that!

I tried to use my Gansai Tambi two-tone granulating paint "Cosmic Blue" on the mortal's hand, but I really haven't figured out how to do what in order to bring out more of the orangeish or blueish pigments. Still, happy with the subject and its execution! More details under the cut.

The magical symbols are a mixture of historical alchemical symbols and those of my own making. With some inspiration from the Abhorsen Charter marks. The triangle-on-a-line-sticking-out-from-a-circle is one of the latter I came up with, oh, 20 years ago, for a larp character. Not very hard to make up so probably someone else had already made it up too. Still. A small easter egg for me.
