John Lennon with singer Tommy Quickly, presumably at Brian Epstein's NEMS Enterprises Offices in London. Tommy was signed by Brian, but struggled to get any hits. He was offered a Lennon/McCartney song, 'Tip of My Tongue' (1963) but it was also a flop. John would later state "That's another piece of Paul's garbage. Not my garbage."
Tommy Quickly's brief foray through the Land of Eleven Ten was noted, particularly his special press conference set up just for fans at KRLA deejay Bob Eubanks' nightclub, the Cinnamon Cinder. Everyone thought that Tommy and his manager Brian Epstein were "so nice". - KRLA Archive
TOMMY QUICKLY
HOLLYWOOD - Tommy Quickly has proved that you don’t have to be a hit to be a star! Ever since his arrival in K*R*L*A*N*D, mobs of KRLA-ers have followed him whereever he goes. Tommy’s press conference was a huge success... it was the first press conference of its kind, exclusive for fans only. No other artist has ever set up a special press conference for fans only, and everyone who went to the bash at the C.C. really appreciated Tommy and Brian Epstein for being so nice.
“This boy electrified me.“ So said Brian Epstein about his latest discovery, Tommy Quickley (also spelled Quickly, born Thomas Quigley). With characteristic hyperbole, Brian assured the KRLA Beat that Quickley "will be the biggest star in the world”, even bigger than the Beatles.
Despite Epstein’s support and a debut song penned by Lennon/McCartney called “Tip Of My Tongue”, Quickley failed to catch on anywhere, either in the USA or in England, and retired from the music business in 1965. - KRLA Archive
NEW EPSTEIN DISCOVERY ‘BIG AS THE BEATLES’
BRIAN HERE WITH SHOW
HOLLYWOOD - Brian Epstein, in town for a two week stay, has confided to KRLA that he has a new discovery who will “have as much impact on America as the Beatles did!” Mr. Epstein, the most famous manager in the world, says that Tommy Quickley, new English sensation, will take America by storm.
HERE FOR TWO WEEKS
When Mr. Epstein came to Los Angeles for two weeks, many people thought that he would be discussing the Beatles’ next movie, rumored to be shot in this country. However, this was not the case. Brian stated that he was here with his two other groups, Gerry & the Pacemakers and Billy J. Kramer to take care of arrangements for their shows and to get some rest before arranging for Tommy Quickley’s visit to Los Angeles on November 25th.
“TOP STAR IN THE WORLD”
When asked if he had as much faith in his new discovery as he had in the Beatles, Brian replied “I have faith in all my artists, but this boy electrified me.” KRLA asked if he thought Tommy would be as big as the Beatles.
“Not only that,” Brian stated, “But I think this boy will be the biggest star in the world!”
DISCOVERED AT AUDITION
Tommy was discovered early in 1963 when he auditioned at a ballroom outside Liverpool. Brian happened to be in the manager’s office while Tommy was playing, and decided right then and there that he wanted to manage him.
WAS ON TV SHOW
Although Quickley is unknown in this country, he is the fastest rising star in England. He has appeared with the Beatles many times, and has been taped for a Shindig show shown a few weeks ago. Tommy is 19, lives in Liverpool, has brown eyes and hair, and stands 5′11″.
