AMELIA & TONI Grey's Anatomy | 22.14
I'm sorry but that scene where Toni gave Amelia some made-up awards in order to tell her how impressed she is by her and how much she appreciates her and that she's basically all she wants and needs was the cutest fucking thing EVER
crazy how quickly everyone forgot about monica in favor of toni
Okay. I’m just going to say it.
Is anyone else… not feeling Amelia and Toni?
And before anyone jumps me, this is not me saying Amelia shouldn’t move on. Monica is gone. We all know that. I’m not delusional about canon (even if I write 40k words pretending otherwise).
I want Amelia to have an endgame. I want her to be happy. I want her to have someone who chooses her.
But this? This doesn’t feel like that.
It feels… inserted.
And that’s what’s bothering me.
Because tell me why it feels like the entire Monmelia arc has just been quietly swept under the rug. Like it never happened. Like we imagined the slow burn, the longing looks, the emotional intimacy, the “I see you” moments. Like we hallucinated the depth.
We didn’t.
It just changed route.
And instead of honouring that route (even in grief) we’ve skipped straight to: “Oh here’s someone Amelia had a crush on in med school and now they’re sleeping together.”
In the same episode.
And it just feels so contrived.
Where is the yearning?
Where is the tension?
Where is the exploration of their backstory before booking u?
Where is the wlw slow-burn ache we LIVE for?
Monmelia was definitely too slow burn, I know, so I’m not asking for a repeat of that that because it never got the payoff it deserved. But this feels like the opposite extreme. No build-up. No real emotional layering. Just…”here’s a new queer love interest, you’re welcome.”
And I don’t know… it feels very “damage control.”
Monica gets killed off. The backlash is loud. So Amelia comes back and is immediately paired with another woman. Almost like: See? Representation! Fixed!
But representation isn’t just putting two queer women in a room and having them sleep together.
We deserved the Monica story finished properly. Or at least honoured properly.
And what frustrates me most is the subtle narrative this creates — that queer fans will just be happy with any queer pairing. That we don’t care about chemistry. Or build-up. Or character continuity. That we’ll clap because two women are kissing.
That’s not it.
I don’t ship wlw because it’s wlw.
I ship story.
I ship longing.
I ship emotional payoff.
I ship representation.
Monmelia worked because it was layered. It was messy. It felt earned (even if it was ultimately cut short). There was subtext. There was restraint. There was that specific kind of intimacy that builds over time.
Amelia and Toni? Right now it feels like a placeholder.
And maybe I’ll be proven wrong. Maybe they’ll build it. Maybe they’ll give it weight and history and something that feels rooted.
But as it stands, it feels rushed. It feels reactive. And it feels like a disservice to the emotional journey we were already invested in.
You can move a character forward without pretending the past didn’t matter.
And right now… it kind of feels like it didn’t.
Idk am I alone in this?
fanfic coming soon. trust.
Just a reminder that, if the writers were going to put Jules in a attending/resident relationship, here were some of the other options they could have gone with:
Had to add Jo/Jules twice there, lol.
Just something to think about.
Greys finally having sapphic relationship with both have/love kids from the start. Wow
