I’m sure everyone’s already figured this out, but I’m rereading The Toll (Arc of a Scythe) and I just realized that the story with the believer, the magician and the mauler is about Sister Astrid, Curate Mendoza and Scythe Morrison. I mean, think about it; Astrid believes that Greyson is the Tone made flesh, even though he doesn’t believe it himself; Mendoza is the showman who makes all of the Toll’s appearances special; and Morrison protects Greyson, hurting those who try to hurt him.

so you remember in Thunderhead when that one tonist came to Scythe Anastasia and Curie's hotel room and he was saying all that stuff and Anastasia mentioned the bowl of primordial ooze and how it was full of diseases that used to kill mankind and the tonist said "and it will kill mankind again!" or whatever and then in The Toll we learn in the lost pages of Scythe Da Vinci that he put hints of the fail safe into the culture of the world and some of those hints went to the tonists and the black stuff inside the Scythe rings were nanites of all those diseases and they DID end up killing mankind again and whew Neal Shusterman's mind
