Tony grew up feeling very alone. His father spent all his free time chasing after Captain America. When he wasn’t looking for the super soldier, he was talking about him or shooing Tony away for other reasons, and it gave Tony a bit of a complex. He was given his first drink, by Howard, when he was nine. His mother was always cold and distant, and he couldn’t say he knew anything about her until he was a teenager. Aunt Peggy came around sometimes, but Edwin and Ana were the only people he ever really thought of as a parents. The endless boarding schools that took him out of contact with his family didn’t help any of this.
His father gave him the birds and bees talk when he was 12, but he didn’t really get it and Jarvis didn’t explain the ‘mysterious urges’ any better. By the time he hit college, he’d decided that it was better to just pretend—to do what everyone else was doing. And he may have overdone it. A lot. He started dating his childhood friend, Tyberius Stone, when he was about 19, and it took him three years to get out of it. Ty was abusive and petty and isolated him from everyone else. During those three years, he was repeatedly raped and emotionally abused. Rhodey got Ty thrown in jail, but it didn’t last as long as anyone could’ve hoped, and Tony lives in semi-constant fear of him.
When Tony finally found out about asexuality, he came out really quickly and it blew up the news. Articles, supportive and not, were across all the papers and news sites and many people still believe it was some kind of publicity stunt. Tony spends a lot of time hanging out on ace blogs, offering advice and just spreading positivity.
Relationships
Tony likes dating people who can take charge. Knowing that the person he’s with could run the world if the responsibility fell into their laps makes him feel a lot safer and more comfortable. He needs someone who can help manage his shit and keep him in the shape of a functional human being. Anyone he dates also needs to be okay with no sex. Although Tony does have sex, he usually only does it when he’s drunk and craving human contact and can’t see another way to get it. He does not like orgasms and generally finds it easier to avoid sex entirely than to explain that.
He’s definitely okay with BDSM or dom/sub relationships, but after Ty, he doesn’t have the best experience with it, so he needs a lot of aftercare.
Tony also doesn’t have casual friends. He has acquaintances and people he works with and then he has people he’s decided to never let go of. It’s a lot of work being one of the people he clings to and the transition into becoming one of them often involves a lot of testing from Tony, which isn’t pleasant. He will push people away quite a lot before he ever lets them get close. However, if Tony trusts a person, that trust is almost absolute.
