TONY AWARDS DAILY DOPE The amazing Cynthia Erivo (who should win best actress in a musical this evening) in her first televised performance of "I'm Here" from "The Color Purple." We were blessed to see the show in April (THANK YOU church lady extraordinaire & occasional Sofia, Carrie Compere!) and experience Cynthia Erivo's amazing gifts first hand! Her acting, both dramatic and comedic, among the best in the game… and her phenomenal vocal skills almost go unnoticed because they are ALWAYS in service of the story and the character. But early in the show when she's laying on the ground in a fetal position and effortlessly belted a high, sustained note, I knew we were in the presence of a superstar. TONY AWARDS DAILY DOPE This. Show. Shuffle Along. Those deep inside the LoJoWerkz circle know we've been into the nearly-forgotten history of "Shuffle Along" for almost 20 years now. We began researching it when we wrote our first musical in 1997, based on the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921. "Shuffle Along" opened on Broadway --- 1 week before the Tulsa Riots. The world changed. The Harlem Renaissance was what followed. I could keep writing cause the connection is mad deep, but I'll stop.
