a) can we do this for each other’s stories like every now and then to motivate each other i’m in SUCH a writing rut recently b) tell me about eugene’s fashion sense and his role in the story!
That’s a fantastic idea! I’ll think of some questions to ask you in return.
Eugene’s Fashion Sense
I’d primarily describe his fashion sense as “working class dandy.”
Here’s the concept art of Eugene drawn by my sister @hertzprung
Rose told me that his hairstyle was inspired partially by Oscar Wilde, which is perfect. I tend to describe his clothes as fashionable, but old/worn/scruffy/disheveled.
He cares a lot about his appearance but also hates rich people so he doesn’t want to look TOO fancy.
Eugene’s Role in the Story
In Part 1, Eugene shows up in town at the same time as Patrick, Margaret’s childhood friend who’s returning home from the Navy.
Eugene has been involved in union organizing before and his main goal in coming to the northern islands is to convince the locals to organize.
But he also becomes good friends with both Patrick and Margaret.
One of the main plotlines of Part 1 revolves around Patrick proposing to Margaret, and Margaret needing to make a decision about whether she should be true to herself as a lesbian and say no, or whether she should bow to social pressure and say yes.
Eugene is gay and has a crush on Patrick and him opening up to Margaret about that is part of what helps resolve that particular storyline. He’s also a lot more knowledgeable about the gay culture and theory of their day than Margaret is, and ends up teaching her a lot about that stuff.
In Part 2 he gets more of his own storyline. The labor organization stuff will come to a head in Part 2, his backstory will be revealed, and he’ll get his romance with Patrick.
