Hijras, who can be eunuchs, intersex or transgender, have been part of South Asia’s culture for thousands of years. Eunuchs are celebrated in sacred Hindu texts such as the Mahabharata and the Kama Sutra. They also enjoyed influential positions in the Mughal courts. (x)

AUGUST 27: The Other Love Story premieres (2016)

Released on YouTube on this day in 2016, The Other Love Story web series tells the story of two girls named Aadya and Aachal falling in love against the backdrop of Bengaluru, India in 1998.

The first episode of The Other Love Story is titled “The Meeting” and shows Aadya and Aachal not meeting for the first time, but rather really seeing each other for the first time. Aadya is the daughter of a well-known schoolteacher and Aachal is the daughter of the owner of a local bangle shop; they have met before and they know each other’s families, but it isn’t until the Aachal confronts Aadya on “just one of those days” where she is feeling lost and completely othered from those around her that the two girls strike up a friendship. Aachal sees Aadya crying on the street and invites her over to her home the next day to simply “talk,” with the promise of a true connection hanging in the air.

Over the course of 12 episodes, The Other Love Story shows what it was like for lesbian romance to blossom in a homophobic world during the pre-internet and pre-iPhone days, when loneliness truly meant loneliness and there were no blogs or web series to turn to when you didn’t see a place for yourself in the world. The simplicity of The Other Love Story radiates with an honesty and respect for the story being told; Aadya and Aachal’s love story grows through diary entries and love letters rather than text messages or Instagram likes, engendering an automatic nostalgia and empathy in the audience.
