In December 2012, my husband asked me a question that would change our lives. "How would you feel about traveling the world for a year?" He let me know after the fact that he was so nervous asking me and would have been crushed if I had said no. What he didn't know was that, like himself, I was discouraged with our children's obsession with technology and was looking for a way to unplug them and let them experience all that life has to offer. I didn't even hesitate in my answer..."When do we leave?"
It was incredible to both of us that we had been feeling the same way and knew we had to make a big change to the way we were living. Technology was taking over our children's lives. We had a Wii, X-box, Skylanders, Skylanders Giants, Rock Band, 2 - DS's, DSI, a 2DS, an iPad, 2 laptops, a desktop computer, several iPod's, several TV's with PVR's, every channel & movie available and stacks and stacks of games and movies. Sound familiar? Now here's the kicker - they still weren't happy and obsessed over every new game or "New and Improved" game system that came out. The whole thing is set up so parents are constantly reaching in to their pockets and kids are never satisfied. This is the well oiled machine we wanted to get away from.
